So templeton Stn has this huge piece of pavement next to it, which I though was originally for the 400-expresses, till they got axed.

The question is: what's its purpose now?

It's for the long-term parking lot, and there should be retail and office buildings there as well in the future. YVR also has plans to make Templeton Station the drop off and pick up location for passengers, there should be some check-in facilities as well....which explains why the station is so massive....I have a feeling that they have plans to toll the road to the airport in the future.

1.) So they'll be charging people extra cash to use EITHER the RAV line or the roads. that's great.

2.) If templeton is the new drop off and pickup location, will passengers still be forced to shell out 2.50 + 2.50 for the ride there?

Well, it's just what I THINK they are currently contemplating. I mean, their aim is to get people to be picked up and dropped off at Templeton instead of relatives/friends/taxi's driving to the terminal....not many would choose that option, without a toll.

Road and train toll? Screw you guys, I'm moving to Burkeville.

LOL....airplanes over your house ALL NIGHT LONG. My brother lived there - took awhile to get used to the house shaking experience. Although, it's kind of like camping there all year...people walk around in housecoats/pj's with coffee in their hands. Pretty laid back.

I won't be bothered by a toll, since I never get to travel and have no use for an airport. Fail life. :(

The Canada Line at Sea Island, from Templeton to the Airport Terminal Station is free of charge. I'm not sure how they'll enforce that, as it doesn't seem very practical and quite complicated for visitors that don't know the system (and could get fined for it if they are caught without a ticket outside Sea Island), but that's the plan.

Yeah, my second ex spent her early years in Burkeville. Same story.

I though taxicab drivers would be getting cheesed off due to the loss of potential revenue for fares to the airport. I talked to one last time I was in Van City, and he said he didn't think it would be too bad, because their clientele is typically businessmen who don't care about cost, or people who need to get their fast (again, cost is no concern).

Interesting to me, anyways. I don't quite know how this will help cabdrivers.

Re: the toll

Remember that the Arthur Laing Bridge, which most people take, is owned and maintained by YVR. Hence, a toll on that bridge is a possibility. The Dinsmore Bridge (from Gilbert Road) is also theirs.

However, unless they toll Grant MacConachie Way or Miller Road, you can always get around it by taking any bridge from Lulu Island (except the Dinsmore)...

if translink wants to toll the road to the airport

they'll be huuuuuuuge public outcry

the ppl running translink are horrible at managing anything

Actually, it has absolutely nothing to do with Translink. The land belongs to the YVR Airport Authority, these are their intentions. The same goes if Arthur Laing Bridge is tolled as YVR owns the bridge as they built it, not Translink. And tolling Arthur Laing is also an option YVR is considering as it was originally meant to be a bridge to the airport, not a commuter bridge to Richmond and they want to relax some of that congestion we see everyday on that crossing. Another option also includes a twinned Arthur Laing, perhaps also tolled.

The plan would likely be to toll Grant MacConachie Way, the road to the airport terminal.

ah that makes more sense

i was wondering why translink would toll both road and train

Had YVR not given $300-million to Translink for the Canada Line, there likely wouldn't have been an airport leg for the Canada Line. It was YVR's idea to build the Canada Line to their airport as well, the original plan was just to Richmond. Both Translink and YVR saw the additional ridership by having one seamless train ride from Vancouver to the airport terminal. But the problem is there is bound to be lower ridership along the Sea Island section, meaning it will be unable to break even and that 5-km section would be a money loser....thus, the $2.50 surcharge for the airport (i'm also sure the surcharge was also done to appease taxi cab and limo companies). Most of the Canada Line's ridership south of the Fraser River will be from Bridgeport Station and the other Richmond Stations.

Had Translink refused, YVR would likely have spent that same money on an airport monorail that would have connected to Bridgeport Station.

A majority of people living in Vancouver hardly know about this extra $2.50. I don't expect tourists to do likewise.

It's different from the 98. On the 98, you're expected to get on the front of the bus if you're new here and to pay up. Otherwise, you'd have no idea why people are boarding on all 3 doors.

This "hidden fee" (it's in quotes for a reason) irks me; however, if it was advertised with BIG POSTERS, then I might be fine with it.

Well, it wouldn't be that much of a problem once we get smart cards (2010) and fare gates (2011). But even in the short term, this surcharge in small print on the billboards of the station ticketing concourse is bound to be a headache to enforce.

I would imagine there would be some sort of message once inbound (to Vancouver) trains arrive at Templeton, telling passengers on the free airport shuttle to get off.

I'd like to see some sort of backlash against the group that made the $2.5 surcharge, once transit cops start handing out $173 fines to groups of tourist families because they did not know about this "hidden fee."

but that's just me...

Too bad this isn't Hong Kong, otherwise we can rally 60,000 people within a week to hold signs and protest on the streets.

Guy with megaphone: "NO HIDDEN FEES FOR THE AIRPORT!"

Crowd: "No hidden fees for the airport!"

...or maybe just make it a zone 3 instead of a retarded hidden fee.
