nitronuts
I'm guessing we just buy them cuz they are Canadian? We could have had a European bus company set up a bus manufacturing shop here in Vancouver for a slightly higher price for the trolley bus contract 5 years ago, but we said no because of just that.....and they were promising 40 more buses too. So instead of outsourcing Manitoban jobs to BC, actually I'm just leave the sentence right there.
nitronuts
So instead of outsourcing Manitoban jobs to BC, actually I'm just leave the sentence right there. I have no problem sending contracts out of the country if it means we get better quality and quantity. The main purpose/focus is to get quality transit infrastructure, everything else like local job creation should be secondary. Get the biggest bang out of our buck from every tax dollar spent. The problem with the new boats for BC Ferries is that they were designed to specification by BC Ferries and not the world-acclaimed German shipyards. Secondly, they are double-hulled which is the industry safety standard. And this is new to BC Ferries, all other big vessels they have are only single-hulled from what i know. Yeah I agree, I have the philosophy that if we aren't doing it right, why should we then award ourselves a contract when the deal is way better outside the country. It's sorta like your mom buying you ice cream even though you failed your test.
inane
Planning for an additional 3 million people in Chicago by 2040. http://www.suntimes.com/news/transportatio...-Ride05.article A small piece of the article... "We're projecting we're going to add 2.8 million people to this region by 2040 -- we're not going to build enough highways to add 2.8 million people," said Blankenhorn. "We have to make public transit a real option for people." The 1950s saw massive federal investment in highways. But local urban planners see few or no future highways for the region, but more efficient use of existing roads.

I say it was more to do with politics. It was not a sending Manitoba jobs to BC but more of sending our money to Europe then keeping it in Canada. One thing that got my attention from the Chicago link, One solution is coordinating the timing of stop lights through the area's 270 suburbs, said Frank Beal, executive director of the civic group Chicago Metropolis 2020. "If you coordinate stop lights the way the city of Chicago does, you can get 15 percent more traffic through," he said. Now only if the various municipalities in the Lower Mainland could coordinate traffic lights.

They do but it's difficult with all the cross traffic and what not. It's the main reason I want to make north-south and east-west one way streets through Vancouver, you could time the lights way easier then. nitronuts
Well, over here in Vancouver we're supposedly planning for another million people by 2040...to 3-million. If we include the Fraser Valley, it'll be close to 4-million by 2040.
BradMayFan
frack YEAH!!!!!!! New SeaBus sailing into town tomorrow Keep an eye out for the new SeaBus—the Burrard Pacific Breeze—sailing in from Victoria on Friday, October 9. The SeaBus is scheduled to leave Victoria at about 9 a.m., with a tentative arrival time of 2:30 p.m. in Burrard Inlet. (Send me your photos if you snap any, and I'll post them up here!) The Burrard Pacific Breeze will be heading for the North SeaBus terminal, where it will then undergo sea trials, staff training, and certification by Transport Canada. Once that's through, the SeaBus will enter revenue service, which we estimate to be in December or so. And to tide you over in the meantime, here's some photos from the christening of the Burrard Pacific Breeze, if you haven't seen them before. I really wish I could see it come in. Starbug
Holy paranoia batman! Coughing woman asked to get off transit bus A Victoria woman who was asked to get off a bus because she was coughing says concerns about H1N1 have reached hysteria levels. "I get the concern," said Jenn Chapman, 41, a human resources worker. "There needs to be some precaution, there needs to be some education. But there needs to be way less hype." Chapman said on Thursday she was riding a bus and coughing into her sleeve, as directed by public health officials -- even though her doctor has assured her she doesn't have H1N1 swine flu. An elderly woman sitting some distance away told Chapman she shouldn't be riding public transit with a cough. The woman then approached the driver and demanded he take action. The driver, although clearly uncomfortable, asked Chapman if she was close enough to her destination to leave the bus. Since she was only two stops away, she got off to keep the peace. "What are you going to do? I was brought up to respect my elders," said Chapman. "She wasn't rational at that point." full article My take on this were pretty much summed up by these two comments following the article: This story is the result of all the hype that surrounds H1N1. People have to get their wits about them. The sky is not falling. Don't go into panic mode. This woman is owed an apology. She was nice enough to get off the bus and not cause a scene. I can imagine the panic this will cause when and if people start to get the flu. & We will have to keep our hysteria under control. Coughing is a natural function of the body and we cough for many reasons. Coughing was around long before H1N1 was ever discovered. People may be coughing because they are having an allergic reaction to someone's scent they are wearing, a tickle in their throat, asthma attack, choking, stroke and numerous other ailments. Dryness in the winter months also perpetuates more coughing as the throat gets irritated. Public transit is just what it says. Take your chances or use some other form of transport. I've been overcome by bus fumes when the bus was idling in traffic and coughed until tears ran down my face. I was not sick. I was choking.
