inane
http://www.nation.co.ke/oped/Opinion/-/440...124/-/4p2sjj/-/ Public spaces make our cities liveable, not superhighways A small section: However, according to Enrique Penalosa, the former mayor of the Colombian capital Bogota, the worst thing a city can do to solve its traffic problems is to build bigger roads that can carry more motorised traffic. High velocity roads do not reduce traffic jams; they just make it easier for more people to use private vehicles. In successful cities, sidewalks, pedestrian walkways and public parks are the great levellers, where factory workers mingle with corporate executives, and where the dignity of all, regardless of social class, is respected. Penalosa claims that highways are “a monument to inequality” in a city, and you can tell that a city is sick “when shopping malls replace plazas and public spaces”. ronthecivil
^ trains run every 3-minutes on the Evergreen, so it should be about 6-minutes. Of course, you could always evaporate the leg out to douglas college!
BuckyHermit
Just woke up and heard on CFOX that there are 50,000 people coming in and out of the downtown core today? And transit is being extended to get ready for that? What's up? (They also took the chance to say, "WTF? Vancouver has a huge transit problem and wouldn't be able to handle huge crowds during the Olympics." Preaching to the choir, aren't we?)

Pretty dramatic but I wonder how accurate... I don't know, but it is definately in need of replacement as SOMETHING bad would happen if there was a large earthquake. And looking briefly over the article, there is a plan to eliminate it and instead increase capacity on the road that goes AROUND seattle. That's a much better solution. nitronuts
This just in.....the UBC underground bus loop project has been canceled indefinitely.....despite all the signage and millions spent on planning over the last 6 years and construction since September (notice all those banners too!). UBC Plans to Cancel Underground Bus Loop, Students Demand Accountability Oct. 27, 2009 The Alma Mater Society at UBC Vancouver (AMS) is demanding accountability now that the UBC Executive has planned to cancel the underground bus loop that is already under construction. The decision to have one central below-grade bus terminal on campus emerged from the 2003 Campus Transit Plan—prior to any public consultation. The total cost of the project is approximately $50 million and Translink was going to provide approximately $10 million towards construction. The UBC Executive informed the AMS that if Translink could not meet their contribution, the underground bus loop at UBC would be cancelled. Translink has recently adopted a 10-year funding plan that does not include this allocation. “Students will be furious that UBC has wasted their money for the past six years on a construction project that students opposed from the start,” said AMS President Blake Frederick. “The UBC Board of Governors decided to split the underground bus loop into two projects — the tunnel and the terminal. Students cautioned that UBC could be funding a tunnel to nowhere when they released funding for the tunnel without first securing funding for the terminal. This is exactly what has happened.” UBC will not respond to the AMS’ request for information on how much money they have squandered on the underground bus loop, although it could be in the millions. “UBC President Stephen Toope and the UBC Board of Governors must be held accountable for their mismanagement of UBC’s funds,” Frederick says. “This will severely damage students’ confidence in UBC’s campus planning; UBC must now partner with students to determine the revised transit plan for campus.”
Columbo
Damn you UBC.... Not that I'm unhappy about this, in fact I hated the underground bus loop plan. But couldn't they have figured this out 5 YEARS AGO?

The whole project has been a disaster ever since they announced plans for it. It was supposed to be completed 1 year before my original planned graduation date... yet, here I am with my degree and despite taking an extra year to earn it, the loop is still not even seeing the light of day. This was a fail from the start.

Starbug
Victoria is raising bus fares soon, most dramatically for seniors and students. They're also - finally - going to trial late-night service for three months. Three routes - the 4, 6, and 14 - will run until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays starting in January (currently the last buses run at midnight). http://www.timescolonist.com/news/Transit+...3585/story.html

Or even better than that, buy more trains! Cost benefit ratio = distustingly good for that option. It would probably GENERATE revenue.
ronthecivil
Perhaps cancelling to build the Millennium Line extension to UBC? Well, that wouldn't be happening any time soon anyways. But even then, I don't know why they would put the terminal underground when a millenium line extension would logically be above ground from Blanca in. It's like they had no plans of ever extending it there when they came up with this.
