My history might be a little hazy but I think translink had plans to put in a Bline service down 41st street that went to UBC (and I think metrotown in the other direction) with the buses they freed up from taking out the 98. Not sure what happened there but it was SUPPOSED to exist like right now.

Yes that was supposed to happen, but I don't really know why as there already is the 43, which is an express to Joyce (where that b-line would go anyways). To me it just seemed like a re-naming of the route. Maybe they'd run the buses longer or something.

Run buses much more frequent (up to B-line standards)

As well, there was a proposal to extend the 43/91 over to BCIT.

Wasn't the 135 suppose to become the #95 B-Line.

49th Ave needs a B-Line. The buses are packed leaving Langara and I feel sorry for people trying to getting at stops after Langara, but before Victoria Dr. since they are not going to be getting on.

Translink CEO quits.

http://www.bclocalnews.com/surrey_area/peacearchnews/news/69296032.html

It's a major blow for the region and hopes for transportation improvements.

Tom Prendergast is resigning as CEO of TransLink to return to New York.

Prendergast was a big part of the vision behind TransLink's recent push for a an ambitious expansion of the transit system.

He fused together a surprisingly strong coalition of both Metro Vancouver's 21 mayors and a new professional board of directors that was installed to replace elected politicians in 2008.

Few observers thought the two groups would see eye-to-eye, but with Prendergast they united to call on the province to deliver major new funding sources for TransLink, through means like road pricing or regional tolling.

Victoria resisted and in the summer transportation minister Shirley Bond announced a new review of TransLink to be led by B.C.'s comptroller general.

Prendergast denied he saw it as "meddling" but later admitted he was disappointed by the move.

Mayors, blocked from new sources and an ability to launch a preferred $450-million-a-year transit expansion, settled for a $130-million funding increase that keeps the system on life support.

Prendergast will take over as president of the New York City Transit Authority, the top job in North America's biggest subway system.

"We're obviously disappointed to lose Tom," TransLink board chair Dale Parker said. "He's done just a terrfific job and we'll desperately miss him."

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts, chair of the Mayor's Council on Regional Transportation, said she is profoundly disappointed.

"It's extremely disturbing to lose such a person of that calibre and knowledge," she said. "It really is a loss for the region."

Asked if she believes the political conflict between the region and the provincial government over the future of TransLink was a factor, Watts said: "Tom, with the knowledge he had of transportation and the calibre of the work he brought to the table, I feel he probably wasn't fully appreciated by some."

135 was, but Surrey needs it faster. Thus, priority is put on the 399.

49 doesn't need a B-line. They just need more frequent service at specific times. As well, they need to get rid of parking on 49 and open up a 2nd lane.

in fact, that's the problem with 49: only one lane. You can't run a B-line on THAT type of road. Broadway, Granville, and 41 - what do they have in common? Multiple lanes, with dedicated HOV/BOV lanes. THAT'S what we need.

I HATE the SkyTrain this time of year. It's NOT cold out, yet they crank up the f%$#@ing heat in the trains like its -10 below. Do they think that we're dressed in swimsuits during the fall? I'm always sweating my balls off on the SkyTrain in the morning and I'm normally only wearing jeans, a polo & a rain jacket.

SkyTrains DO NOT need heat. Even in winter.

I wonder if those geniuses at Translink have ever thought of making them thermostat controlled.

Re: the 49

I do wish they would put in a 49 express, similar to the 43 express on 41st. 49 is a long-arse route, and would benefit greatly from an express route.

What's the point of a 49 express though? It's designed as a local route.

Plus, there's not enough lanes to support any sort of "faster-than-rush-hour" buses.

If you want west-east, you go 99 or 43. Even 100 if you're crazy.

41 was also designed as a local route. Look how that turned out.

49 is actually very heavily used once you get past Granville. It's insane.

Biggest difference is, for the most part of its route, 41st Ave has more than 1 lane. Thus, it can run express buses without it getting snarled in traffic.

49 doesn't have that luxury.

The point of an express bus is so that it only hits main stops, and gets you from A to B faster than other alternates. If the 49-express gets caught in traffic with the other 49s, then what good is it?

I'll agree with you in that 49 is heavily used once you get past Granville (we talking WB or EB here?), but the road infrastructure doesn't allow for an express bus.

As well, where's the resources for that bus coming from? The 98s are all going to Surrey for the 399; there's talk of B-lining the 135 and the 43. On my list of west-east priorities, the 49's pretty damn far back.
