Writing a 5k paper on this: Snake Goddess idol

snakegoddess.jpg

Arthur Evans discovered it at Knossos in 1902, claimed that the Minoans worshipped a single female goddess, and that this was it. I call BS... because you find two idols (one of which may have been a forgery) in a palace means that it was inevitably their god?!? That could be like poeple studying us in the future and finding... a barbie, and thinking that it is our god. Too much jumping to conclusions, just because he never found a male idol does not mean that they did not have a male god as well, or.. even exclusivly, as the Snake Goddess may very well not have even been their god... just because a male idol isn't found doesn't mean it doesn't/didn't exist.

Anyone think I have a viable argument? And no.. I'm not mentioning the modern day comparison haha...

^^^ NO WAY?? Greek dork in training? NICE!!

Actually I changed the focus of that paper, which I JUST finished about 10 minutes ago! I went on to discuss how the idols were perceived by Evans, and still are today, to be much more important that they warrant. They really tell us nothing about Minoan religion or culture. I didn't really discuss the forgery, because as I was trying to prove that they are unimportant, I figured if it was a real or fake it doesn't make much of a difference. Anyway I won't get into too much detail, but it's pretty solid... I managed to find Evan's archaeological journal of his excavations there, which was a brilliant source.

Anyway, what is your term paper??? Do tell!! I'v got one more classical studies paper too, due in a few weeks!

Oh and and by the way, the idol in my pic up there IS NOT the one that was possibly forged, it's the other one... I just like this idol better :)

My course is just a pretty basic overview on Classical world/archaeology, and the prof threw us some pretty simple topics to start off. I'm looking to expand on her topic which is explaining how archaeological remains can be considered a 'non-renewable resource', and some examples from the Classical world.

So yeah, was just going to expand on that, maybe look into a history of artifact conservation, from the antiquaries and looters that disturbed a lot of sites and decreased the number of viable datable/in-situ sources for remains, go into new techniques and technologies that are developed out of necessity - just like all finite resources need careful management etc.. it's only 10 pages, so am looking to narrow it all down a bit more so that it's not all over the place.

Pretty much just in brainstorming/research mode right now, no real ideas or a thesis yet. Got to read up a bit more before I can settle down and actually start churning out something that's not just brain-vomit.

Congrats on finishing your paper though

Let x be firsts, y be seconds, and z be thirds.

a) 4 firsts = 4x (x=5 points)

= 20 points

2 seconds = 2y (y=3 points)

= 6 points

6 thirds = 6z (z= 1 point)

= 6 points

c) Let y be the number of seconds. Since every second place gets 3 points, the formula will be 3y (which means 3 times y)

...and sorry I don't quite get what you're saying in d) regarding the p=-5.

Hope I helped ;)
