Yeah, the books are going to be some relief, if and when they finally come out. Still, this spin-off looks promising...

Agreed. Also, hoping for something around the history of the Targaryen lineage in Valyria leading up to the doom and their escape to Dragonstone.

For those who (like me) are lamenting the long wait for the final season of GoT, this might cheer you up a bit:

I approve of the choice of subject matter. Hopefully, the pilot becomes a full blown series. I'm going through withdrawal right now, but I can only imagine what it will be like when the final season ends....

Everytime I sit down with my wife to watch TV she asks "is there a new GOT out?" and everytime she gets mad because shes in withdrawl lol

Absolutely. According to Wiki Ice and Fire, Aenar Targaryen brought five dragons with him to Dragonstone to escape the Doom of Valyria. One of those Dragons was Balerion the dread, which Aegon the Conqueror used to conquer Westeros.

A dragon bigger than Drogon, that breaths black flames and end up melting Harrenhal. (Not to mention roasting Lord Harren alive in the tower that would come to be known as Kingspyre) Sounds like good TV to me...:)

At least by going back 1,000 years the characters can be perceived as in mortal danger. Never could understand "pre-quells" set in the near past using characters of today.

i.e.

Han Solo movie, no actual danger for him, or Chewie, in the pre quell because you know they lived and  met Luke.

Have you read The World of Ice and Fire: The untold History of Westeros?

It starts out on a semi-lengthy description of how Valyria came to be... including their invading of Esteros (absolutely amazing use of force)... and the Doom (which enforces some of the theories I've seen you post about Faceless Men having a large hand in that destruction)

It then describes the invasion of Westeros, The Dragon wars, then the history of each family.

Very good context to the overall picture.

I am sure it will, just too much money to pass up.  The Tower of Joy scene and Bran's visions are my favorite non-battle scenes so I cannot wait for a prequel.  Why stop there, how about a mini prequel movie to tide us over lol?

Oh man. I won't check this thread until I catch up.. but I'm finally to the end of season 3 now. My brother told me some time ago before I embarked on this Game of Thrones adventure that it's a brutal show and nobody is safe and so far that's pretty much true.

I liked the Starks the most. They are, or were, the most decent hold going and the Lannisters completely obliterated them. That red wedding scene was &^@#ed up. I knew something serious was about to drop when Frey's guard closed the hall doors and the look on Catelyn's face told it all that something majorly bad was bound to happen to them. Robb made some serious miscalculations which led them to that point anyway. Like dishonoring the treaty with Frey in the first place, then executing Karstark against the wishes of his camp, which caused the Karstark army to disband, which forced Robb to try and alliance with Frey for more troops, only after he ridiculed Edmure for wasting men fighting the Mountain. You could say inexperience got the better of him - of them all. Tywin exercised his experience and political and militaristic wits and claimed a victory without likely ever being acknowledged for it but also will not endure any of the fallout that comes with killing the Starks as Tyrion pointed out. I found it interesting when I think it was Varys who told Tyrion that patience is key when it comes to vengeance - had Jon committed to leaving the Night's Watch to join Robb after Ned's death, he likely would've been massacred too at the wedding.  I imagine that Jon Snow will eventually avenge them all somehow.

I don't know if you caught it or not, but there was an important clip that the showrunners didn't convey very well:

All throughout the books, we are told that when visiting the hall of another house, it's important that you are given bread and salt. This is an indication that you are a guest in their house and that no harm shall befall you while there. Throughout Westeros, causing harm to a guest is considered one of the most unforgivable transgressions there is.

That's why the clip that showed Robb and Catelyn being offered bread and salt was so important.

I tried to show the monkey, but my computer skills are just not up to it. :(

As an aside, the police have told me to be a lot more careful about where I show the monkey, but I digress.

For those who (like me) are going through GoT withdrawal and are also awaiting Martin's next book in the series, here's a small fix for you:

Winter is coming, eventually. Fire and Blood, the new fictional Westeros history book from George R.R. Martin, is coming much sooner. It's set to arrive on Nov. 20, months before the final season of HBO's Game of Thrones, and certainly long before the sixth planned installment in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga on which Thrones is based.Fans wishing for a return to Westeros sooner rather than later need to look no further than Martin's own website, where the author has published an excerpt from Fire and Blood. It focuses on Alysanne Targaryen, wife and sister to the fourth Targaryen king, Jaehaerys I, and chronicles her first trip to the North more than half a century after Aegon the Conqueror seized control over Westeros and forged the Seven Kingdoms. While there's certainly no mention of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), given that this story takes place centuries before their births, the tale nonetheless boasts some implications for what to expect from the final season

Preaching to the choir, Shifty.

I bought the books when they were first released, so I'm past 20 years waiting for the ASOIAF to be finished. I just hope it happens before George has a cardiac event.

Maybe I shouldn't bother.

I was not a big fan of books 4 and 5

Martin is noted for making it up as he goes along. He has an idea of where he wants to end up, but no solid plan about how he gets there. He freely admits to switching gears in the middle of book four, which is why there were several main characters who were basically ignored.

Book five is essentially the stuff that he couldn't fit into book five, which is why both came off a bit disjointed.

I wouldn't give up on it yet. It's still an epic story and I'm confident that he'll figure it out eventually.

So the actors that played the Stark girls would smoke weed in the tub, what do I have to do to get in on that? :bigblush:

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Casts Naomi Watts in Lead Role

Naomi Watts will star in the “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot at HBO that hails from Jane Goldman, Variety has learned.

The exact details of Watts’ character are being kept under wraps, but it is known she is playing “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

It was recently announced that Watts had signed on to play Gretchen Carlson in the Roger Ailes limited series currently in the works at Showtime. She previously appeared in Showtime’s revival of “Twin Peaks,” and is known for her roles in films like “Mulholland Drive,” “I Heart Huckabees,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” “St. Vincent,” “The Ring,” “King Kong, and “J. Edgar.” Watts also earned Academy Award nominations for her roles in “21 Grams” and “The Impossible.” She is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Hansen Jacobson.

Taking place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” Goldman’s project chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.

Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Martin, whose “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel series serves as the basis for “Game of Thrones.” Goldman and Martin wrote the story, with Goldman writing the teleplay. She will also serve as showrunner. She and Martin will executive produce along with Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, and “Game of Thrones” executive producer Vince Gerardis. Chris Symes will co-executive produce.

Goldman’s series is one of five “Game of Thrones” projects that has been in the works at HBO. The exact nature of the plot of each project has been kept under tight wraps, though Martin has previously made clear that each project is a prequel rather than a spinoff and that none of the current main cast of the series will be involved. He has also ruled out fan theories that any of them will focus on his characters Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon the Unlikely, or Dunk and Egg as they are popularly known. He has also said that Robert’s Rebellion will not be the subject of any of the prequels.
