Turns out August 16 is a sad day in rock history.  Both the King of Rock and the Queen of Soul died on August 16ths.   

 

This day in rock history:

 

August 16, 1977:  Elvis Presley was found dead lying on the floor in his bathroom by his girlfriend Ginger Alden.   He died of heart failure at the age of 42. His first record for RCA, 'Heartbreak Hotel' was also his first US No.1. He starred in 31 films. Elvis holds the record for the most entries on the US Hot 100 chart with 154. Elvis became the first rock 'n' roll artist to be honoured by the US Postal Service with a stamp.

 

 

 

August 16, 2018

 

American singer and songwriter Aretha Franklin died in Detroit at the age of 76. Known as ‘The Queen of Soul’ and one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. During her career she scored over 15 Top 40 hits and won 18 Grammy Awards. Hits include the 1967 US No.1 & UK No.10 single 'Respect', the 1968 UK No.4 single 'I Say A Little Prayer' and the 1987 UK No.1 single with George Michael, 'I Knew You Were Waiting'. In 2010 Rolling Stone magazine ranked her number one on their list of the ‘100 Greatest Singers of All Time’.

This day in music history:

 

August 17, 1959: American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis released Kind of Blue which is regarded by many critics as jazz's greatest record, Davis's masterpiece, and one of the best albums of all time. Its influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical genres, has led writers to also deem it one of the most influential albums ever recorded.

This day in rock history:

 

August 18, 1977: The Police made their live debut as a three-piece band when they played at Rebecca's Birmingham, England. The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and are generally regarded as one of the first New Wave groups to achieve mainstream success, playing a style of rock that was influenced by punk, reggae, and jazz.

Saw the guy at 2 small venues- both great shows.

Village Green in Duncan:

He's trying to sing an accapella tune "No More"; and this young gal , on her 19th birthday is yelling "take me I'm yours".

He looks way, way, way down at her and replies" Child, I'm old enough to be your grandfather; and if you were born in Duncan, I just may be". 

She had no idea he was as queer as a three dollar bill. 

They could have taped his voice and used it for fog whistles /horns.

He came up to Powell River once, to the Town Center Pub- just him and one guitarist. He liked it enough that he said he'd come back with a full band, but died before making it up here again. :(
