Wowee; he can barely contain his tears singing that song.  It is so, so sad.

Also perhaps the best Vietnam war song, and truest?  My opinion anyway.  What an authentic songwriter...

IMO a highly under rated songwriter, and  a big loss when covid got him.:

This day in music history:

August 28, 1968:  Tammy Wynette recorded 'Stand By Your Man' at Epic studios after an idea that came from producer, Billy Sherrill. Wynette and Sherril completed the song in 15 minutes. It proved to be the most successful record of Wynette's career and is one of the most covered songs in the history of country music. The song has appeared in various films, including: Five Easy Pieces, The Blues Brothers, The Crying Game, Sleepless in Seattle, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Golden Eye.

There I was scrolling through the thread... minding my very own business (unusually so!)....groovin, on the tunes.... shuckin' and jivin'.... loving the choices of my fellow music lovers and then.... here it was...THIS SONG... the one that has ALWAYS been the one that brings my Dad back to me... and I'm sitting here smiling room-wide while the tears flow... I cannot tell you how much I really needed to hear this song today! Thank you for this wee moment with my Dad who has been gone for far too long... he LOVED this song.... it was one of those 'accidental' buys through Columbia Record House way back in the day...the album that never got sent back in time so he decided to play it and was hooked!!

I'm going to go way back. We used to be able to pick up a signal from a radio station KJA, in Spokane Wash, back in the late 60's. The had a DJ who went by the name Shane, he would close his show with this song, Barbara Streisands' "people", and a few others. This station had 50K watts and carried up into the Interior of BC loud and clear. I had an old tube radio, that worked just awesome.
