Yes all this agreeing has me slightly concerned. I thought we had until (at the very least) 2012 before the apocalypse. Whatever happens, I think it's safe to say your Oilers will make it through....there is nothing better than an underground concrete basement to get you through the storm lol sorry "ladderless" i had to =P

Seriously though, i am even rethinking my 9/10 grade as I really can't remember a movie that brought out so many emotions on such a deep level. The true selflessness of Wil Smith's character is nothing short on inspirational.

I liked the movie as well, however;

Was Will Smith's character truly selfless? I would argue no. The only reason he did any of his good deeds in the movie was to try to atone for indirectly killing a group of people including his wife.

Were his actions commendable and did it make for a very sad movie? Yes, however I disagree with them being completely selfless.

~SPOILERS~

Interesting take. Hadn't really thought of it that way. But I will stay on the selfless side of the argument. Even though he was trying to rectify the damage he had done years prior, commiting suicide in order to prolong/aid the life of others is extremely selfless...regardless of how he became that way IMO.

Cruisin through dictionary.com.....the definition for selfless is having little or no concern for oneself and I think that would be a very fair definition of Ben(Tim) Thomas.

I agree with that statement, but his emotional state led me to believe (and ive seen this movie twice) that to him, suicide was inevitable. He was so distraught by what he had done that he was going to take his own life regardless. On his way out though, he decided that he would try to do all he could to help others, which I agree is selfless. However, to be truly 100% selfless to me, he would have had to kill himself to save/help the others while he still had the will to live.

This is why I believe he expedited his death after the night with Rosario Dawson's character, he realized that he was starting to find another reason to live, so he killed himself before he truly had to make a decision as to whether or not he wanted to live to be with her.

I just felt that this was the only thing in my mind that let me get completely behind Ben(Tim's) plan for atonement, I still felt that his motivations, while on the surface appeared selfless, were still in some way, selfishly driven.
