JACKSON DOUBTFUL, PIERCE COULD START FOR LIONS VS. ARGOS

It appears Buck Pierce could be back in the starter's role with the B.C. Lions this Saturday.

Starter Jarious Jackson is doubtful and will have an MRI to determine the extent of what the team is calling a shoulder strain.

Jackson has also been battling a jammed pinky finger he suffered early in the Lions loss to the Montreal Alouettes this past Sunday.

Pierce took the starter's reps at practice on Wednesday. He has not played since August 14 against the Toronto Argonauts. He threw three passes, completing two for 27 yards with one interception. Pierce started the game against the Argonauts, but was replaced by Jackson after suffering a concussion.

Anyone else dizzy?

I wouldn't mind seeing Lulay. They don't have to rush him in there they can wait until halftime, by then Pierce should have his 3rd concussion of the season and injured anyway. I like Pierce it's to bad his mind is mush like Dickenson, so susceptible to getting concussed.

Rotator cuffs can take up to four months to heal properly in order to do overhead motions. Depends on how bad the tear is.

So, this is not good - Jarious was playing fairly well.

Wally says he hasn't ruled out contacting CP. We'll see what develops here...

Bad news for JJ. I think Printers may be returning to Vancouver soon.

Where do you get that idea?

And to be honest, I am actually changing my mind on him. Season is over half done. We sign him for the rest of the season, if he craps the bed, don't bring him back, if he brings up to the Cup, then kudos.

I could've sworn that I saw Martell Mallett at Metropolis tonight. Not being totally sure, I left him alone.

While I still am against having Printers in the Lions Den for an entire season, desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm sure that heading down the home stretch, and divisional games upcoming, that he doesn't want Travis Lulay to become human chum.

The Province addressed the QB situation and confirms that Wally's not ruling out contacting Casey as an option at this point:

Wally Buono said before morning practice that his toughest decision all day would be whether to get a haircut. It was a good clue he already knew Buck Pierce would replace Jarious Jackson at quarterback when the Lions meet the Toronto Argonauts Saturday at B.C. Place Stadium.

He was playing with his grandson for a moment when it was reported hours later that an MRI taken during practice revealed Jackson had a torn right rotator cuff and would be out for the season.

By the afternoon, the haircut was out, plans to cook dinner for his wife were delayed and Buono was admitting he would have to consider whether to call free agent Casey Printers.

So much for normalcy Thursday, although with the Lions and their quarterbacks over the years what took place pretty much bordered on the routine.

The prospect of being the winningest coach in CFL history Saturday is definitely no longer top of mind for Buono. Ahead for the Lions coach, and likely very soon, is what to do if the next hit to Pierce is his last.

The CFL team confirmed it will be without Jackson for at least three weeks, though similar shoulder injuries have taken significantly longer to heal, and will put him on the recallable nine-week injured list when officially declaring a roster for the game Saturday.

The injury, club sources said, took place during the first offensive series Sunday in Montreal. Jackson played through the problem, and Buono tried stating a bad finger was behind his inactivity at practice Wednesday.

In the meantime, the Lions tried to arrange a shoulder MRI that was performed Thursday morning, and the results were reported by CKNW within hours, prompting the club to begin an investigation about the news leak.

It means the club is now one hit away from Travis Lulay and Zac Champion as its quarterbacks down the stretch if Pierce is injured. Around the Lions that means talk about Printers, who was cut by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after last season and has been passed over by many teams since.

Buono has gradually softened his responses when asked about Printers this year. He dismissed Printers at training camp, but suggested he might consider a move with an eye towards 2010 when asked late last month.

The timetable may have just been advanced Thursday.

"You've got to think about it because we are now in a different position," Buono told Team 1040. "We know we only have three quarterbacks."

And Pierce, who has been ready to play for at least two weeks, has to face the prospect of taking a hit to the head from the same Toronto defence which knocked him out Aug. 14 on what seemed like a minor blow.

The club has been looking to buy a $1,000 monitor to be placed inside a new helmet he will wear Saturday that would help determine the location of hits absorbed. Chances are the shopping just got serious.

"I'm not worried about it. I'm not thinking about it," Pierce said. "If [the Lions] were thinking about my head and I was timid, they'd be worried. I honestly feel OK. You have to take some hits. "

Though the loss of Jackson is a setback, the Lions are in a better place than the last time he was injured.

That occurred when he dislocated a finger in an Aug. 22, 2008 game against Calgary. With only Champion as an available backup, Pierce threw for a career-high 406 yards in his first relief start and secured the role that earned him a multi-year contract worth a reported $330,000 annually.

But that was three blows to the head ago. Pierce knows the reaction he will face any time his head is jarred, likely for the remainder of his career, but said he will focus instead on making quicker throws.

"When you hear 'multiple concussion' it's a scary thing, but everybody knows the kind of player I am," Pierce said.

Buono didn't think the Lions would have to instantly put the belief system of his highest-paid player to the test, but a lot of things changed in a hurry Thursday.
