-DLC-
Yep, Paul's pissed (poor baby). Injuries often deal a cruel fate and it was unfortunate for him that he had to bow out, but he wasn't performing well anyhow. As they said on the team, you don't do this - air your discontent about your team out there for everyone to know...you resolve it behind closed doors. Veteran McCallum fumes as Whyte stays in Lions starter's role By Ian Walker, Vancouver SunSeptember 29, 2009 Bitterness. Anger. Disappointment. Of all the emotions Paul McCallum displayed on Monday, frustration seemed to be at the very foundation of all of them. The veteran B.C. Lions kicker seemed genuinely baffled with his current situation following practice at the team's headquarters in Surrey. A practice in which the 39-year-old's workload consisted of taking reps behind rookie Sean Whyte, which equalled two field goal attempts at the very end of the 90-minute session. Whyte, 23, inherited the starter's job on July 10, when McCallum suffered knee and wrist injuries against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. McCallum just came off the nine-game injury list last week. "If they don't want me, I don't want to be here," said McCallum, who was given permission to seek out a trading partner last week, something the Lions had failed to do in the weeks before. "I want to play, but Wally [buono's] made up his mind with what he wants to do, so then let's move on. I don't want to be here if I'm not going to play. Simple as that. It doesn't make any sense why I stuck my neck on the line and broke my wrist making a tackle, trying to help the team out, and now I don't have a job. I can't make sense of it." Buono said the decision to keep Whyte as the team's starter was strictly a business decision -- a case of putting the team before the player. Even if the said player relocated his family here in the off-season after signing a three-year contract extension with the Lions. And even if the said player has done everything asked of him over the past five seasons. Especially, even if the said player is a sound believer in the philosophy that you should never lose your job to injury. "I'm sorry Paul feels betrayed, but things have changed," said the Lions general manager and coach, adding he feels he kept up his end of the bargain by giving McCallum the benefit of the doubt coming out of training camp. "Paul gets paid very well to come out and do a job. At the end of the day, a professional puts aside their emotions -- whether they are good bad or indifferent -- and does the job. "It's not just a simple thing. I understand how he feels and can appreciate how he feels, but be a team guy," continued Buono. "We all have to sacrifice for the team." Which is what you can expect McCallum to do today. Deep down, he knows there's no way Buono's going to release him because as a veteran player the Lions would still have to pay the remainder of McCallum's salary. Outside retirement, there is no other choice for the veteran but to stay and watch Whyte do the kicking. Unless, of course, McCallum has more money than brains. "I don't want him to retire," said Buono. "But if getting paid doesn't mean that much to him, if being part of a team doesn't mean that much to him, then he has that option." For his part, Whyte is not taking sides. "It's not my issue," said Whyte. "It's got nothing to do with me. Paul and I are still friends. He said it in the dressing room earlier, that it's not my fault. Every athlete wants to play, but Wally's given me a great opportunity that now and in the long run will make me better player." BurnabyJoe
I thought players couldn't lose their jobs to injury? Interesting Wally.. That being said, there is no doubt Sean Whyte makes more sense. He isn't an import and he is young.. oh and a great kicker! I don't see the harm in letting him go, but as of today I think they are on the same page or atleast I heard something to that effect.

Bang Bang Boogie
If McCallum doesn't want to be here, I don't want him here either. Whyte is better anyways and will continue to get better.
Canuck_4_Life
The rule of thumb generally goes: You don't lose your starting job to injury, unless your replacement is better.

Captain Bob
How about Moncton New Brunswick getting a team? Moncton lands 2010 CFL game Last Updated: Wednesday, September 30, 2009 | 2:10 PM AT Comments49Recommend24 CBC News Mark Cohon, the CFL commissioner, said in his state-of-the-league address last November that he was looking to Moncton to host regular-season CFL games in 2010. Moncton East Liberal MLA Chris Collins says a deal has been negotiated to bring a game to the city. (Jeff McIntosh/Canadian Press) The Canadian Football League is bringing a long-awaited regular season game to Moncton, N.B., in 2010, according to a local MLA. Moncton East Liberal MLA Chris Collins said in an interview on Wednesday that the contract to host the game at the University of Moncton's new track stadium was signed between the league and the city last week. Collins has been pushing for the game for several years and he said both the city and the province are emerging as winners by luring the CFL to Moncton. "The city certainly wins and the province wins because it establishes Moncton as no doubt the entertainment capital of Atlantic Canada. We have hit that," Collins said on Wednesday. "This is kind of an award to us for all of the previous work that has been done to establish the city as that." No details have been announced about the date for the game or which of the league's eight teams will be playing in Moncton. Although news of the football game was only announced on Wednesday, those involved with the upcoming event are already getting ready. Gordon Horsman is consulting on the grass that will be grown at the university's stadium. Even though this will be Moncton's first CFL game, Horsman said the players will not know the difference. "They'll all like it. It will be right up there with the big leagues. Absolutely," he said. Earlier in September, Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc said the city was negotiating a five-year contract to bring annual regular-season CFL games to the southeastern New Brunswick city. The idea of Moncton hosting an annual football game started gaining momentum last November when Mark Cohon, the commissioner of the CFL, raised the idea during his annual state-of-the-league address in Montreal. Cohon said in that speech that the main obstacle to Maritime expansion is the lack of a stadium with a minimum seating capacity of 20,000. However, Cohon said the CFL will look into staging 2010 regular-season games in Moncton at the university's new stadium that could see its seating expanded up to 20,000. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/new-brunswick/sto...n-cfl-1027.html How much you want to bet the Lions play a home game there so they can have them away from BC Place for that one extra week? Quasi
I'm taking my 3 year old son to his first football game should be interesting. He'll be rocking a Rider Jersey for sure because thats how we roll. I really hope no idiots ruin his experience, I don't mind some ribbing but throwing crap not acceptable. I usually don't go to the Lions games anymore because of all the drunk idiots hopefully this time it's better.

Anyone who would taunt/bother a kid at a game is a total fool loser who'd likely have a whole crowd on their butt. It isn't a great environment for kids, but you don't have to tolerate any crap...there's a # you can text to have people thrown out if they're ruining it for you. Have fun. And go Lions. EDIT: Here's the info. You don't have to tolerate crap beyond friendly ribbing: If your game experience is interrupted, speak to the nearest BC Place staff member, call (604) 661-3434, or email fan@bcplace.com from a wireless device. Just give the idiot's seat location and they'll take it from there. Or discretely go get someone and point them out, but tell them to intervene when it's not obvious that you did so (could be awkward)...just makes it easier. Take care. Captain Bob
219 I think, right near the goal line (so not that far from the endzone). I wouldn't think anyone would do anything totally dumb because of the little kid but I've had some really bad experiences there so I'm not going to totally discount it. Should be a fun game just in case I put that number in my cell, thanks for that Deb. You're close to bronze. That's where the drunks sit. They are just there to have a good time, and not really watch the game. I'm not saying that everyone that sits there isn't there to watch the game, but the majority of people who don't care about the game and just want to get drunk sit there. Captain Bob
LOL, figures. Oh well I'm sure it will be fine. Yeah, 228-233 is the worst, it's the 7-11 zone. MOST (not you Deb) people that sit there are idiots.
