Delta boy Davis Sanchez is a BC Lion, what a solid signing by Buono, this guys a star

B.C. LIONS SIGN DB DAVIS SANCHEZ

VANCOUVER -- The B.C. Lions added some homegrown talent Tuesday.

The team announced it has signed veteran defensive back Davis Sanchez to a contract. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The native of nearby Delta, B.C., is a nine-year CFL veteran and spent the last four seasons with the Montreal Alouettes.

"The Lions are the only team I wanted to play for this season," Sanchez said in a release. "I have always respected this outstanding organization's quality of coaches and players and I know I'm part of team that will be very difficult to play against."

Sanchez has appeared in 135 career games, including 16 last season with the Grey Cup champion Alouettes. "Davis is a proven player in our league and gives us a number of options on defence," Lions head coach and GM Wally Buono said in a statement. Sanchez has 285 tackles, 26 interceptions and four touchdowns in his CFL career.

He was a first round selection of the Alouettes in 1999. He played with the NFL's San Diego Chargers in 2001 and 2002 before returning to the CFL to join the Calgary Stampeders.

Sanchez also played with the Edmonton Eskimos prior to his most recent stint with the Alouettes.

BC LIONS SIGN WR ARMSTRONG, OL DUCKETT

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - The British Columbia Lions announced Wednesday they have signed wide receiver Derick Armstrong and offensive tackle Damane Duckett.

Armstrong did not play last season after being released by Winnipeg last July, when he reportedly refused to play in the Blue Bombers' season-opener. He had spent the 2007 and '08 seasons with Winnipeg, recording at least 1,000 receiving yards in each and earning an All-Star selection in 2007.

Prior to that, Armstrong spent three seasons with the NFL's Houston Texans and made 45 catches for 605 yards and two touchdowns.

The 30-year-old broke into professional football with Saskatchewan in 2001. In five seasons in the CFL with the Roughriders and Blue Bombers, Armstrong has totaled 289 receptions for 3,994 yards and 20 TDs.

"Derick is an explosive receiver who can play multiple positions and adds a veteran presence," said Lions offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine. "I look forward to seeing what he can bring to our offense."

Duckett, 29, joined the Lions last September after spending time in the NFL. He entered professional football as a defensive lineman, but converted to the other side while with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Edmonton Eskimos announced the signing of free agent non-import linebacker Javier Glatt on Wednesday. A veteran of seven CFL seasons, all with the BC Lions, Glatt was a 2008 CFL Western Division All-Star and a key member of BC's 2006 Grey Cup championship team.

He played in 18 games (five starts) with the Lions in 2009 racking up a total of 53 defensive tackles, 13 special teams tackles, two sacks, two tackles for losses, two interceptions for 46 yards, one fumble recovery and one pass knockdown.

He appeared in both the East Semi-Final and East Final recording a total of one special teams tackle. Javier's older brother J.P Izquierdo played nine years in the CFL, three ('93-'95) of which were with the Edmonton Eskimos where he was a part of the 1993 Grey Cup winning team.

Braley keeps the interests of the league before anything, the only reason he's buying the Argos is to save the franchise. He's one of the classiest people in all of pro sports... he'd never do anything to circumvent the rules and make deals between both teams. Remember, this is the guy that hired Bob Ackles as the President and CEO of the Lions. He's the type of owner to hire the right people and put them in place, which means dealings between Toronto and BC will be the same as always.

Lions ink free agent all-star Keron Williams

BCLions.com Staff

VANCOUVER -- The BC Lions Football Club announced officially announced this morning that they have agreed to terms with CFL All-Star import defensive lineman Keron Williams. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not released.

“This is a great signing for our club and for our fans,” said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono. “Keron is quick, athletic and brings a lot of skill to his position. He was one of the top free agents available and we’re excited to have him join us.”

Williams, who began his career with the Calgary Stampeders in 2006 will enter his fifth CFL season with his third club after spending the last two years with the Montreal Alouettes. Last season, the UMass grad and former college teammate of current Lions linebacker Anton McKenzie recorded 32 defensive tackles and eight sacks and capped his days with the Alouettes with a CFL All-Star selection and a Grey Cup championship.

Bye, bye Buck (although we knew it was inevitable).

B.C. Lions start clearing up quarterback logjam by releasing Buck Pierce

(CP) – 6 hours ago

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The B.C. Lions began clearing up their logjam at quarterback by releasing quarterback Buck Pierce on Tuesday.

The move comes a day after Casey Printers agreed to a contract extension, and now leaves the team with four QBs on the roster.

Jarious Jackson, Travis Lulay and Zac Champion are the others.

"Buck has been a consummate professional during his time with our organization and in addition to thanking him for his efforts over the past five seasons we also wish him the very best in the future," Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono said in a release.

Pierce and backup Jackson took most of the snaps at quarterback last season, each taking over when the other was injured.

Eventually Printers was brought in and took over the starter's role.

Buck passed for 2,272 yards and 10 touchdowns in 12 games, and compiled a record of 21-12-1 in 34 starts over five seasons with the Lions.

Buck had to go. I just hope that he does the smart thing and retires. It's tough for an athlete to pack it in when he knows that he still has a lot to offer, but I don't want to see him wind up another sad story about a player battling health problems long after his career. (We've seen it far more than the NFL would like to admit).

If the Printers we had at the end of last season is the Printers we'll get this season, quarterback will be fine. As long as Printers is healthy. But it's not just a performance thing with Casey, it's an attitude thing. He needs to maintain the humble heart that we saw once he came back to B.C. If that happens, he'll be an all-star. If we get the Casey with a bad attitude who sulked his way out of Hamilton, and nearly sulked his way out of football, then we'll be in big trouble, because he won't finish the year in B.C.

Hopefully Williams can pick up the slack for the loss of Foley. (Even better, maybe Foley gets cut by the Seabags)

Now I'd like to see Wally move JJ out East (hopefully for some help on the O-line) and give the backup job to Lulay.

FYI...

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Eskimos will be playing on artificial grass when the CFL starts its new season this year.

City council granted approval Wednesday to convert Commonwealth Stadium from natural grass, which has been its playing surface since the facility opened in 1978, to a form of field turf.

Commonwealth Stadium is the only facility in the CFL with natural grass.

The Eskimos made their pitch to city hall for a cost-sharing deal to make the change.

Besides a consistent playing surface for an entire CFL season, the football club pointed to the many benefits for the city -- field maintenance will be cheaper, with no watering or fertilizing required every year.

As well, with Commonwealth Stadium having a busy concert schedule, the new field will endure far less damage during the set up and tear down of those events.

One change the Eskimos won't make, however, is a move towards advertising on the field surface.

"Our sponsorship guys would love to do it, (but) we're still going to remain true to a clean field," says Eskimos' CEO Rick LeLacheur

"There might be some day that we have to go to markings on the field. For the Grey Cup game, (advertising) will be on the field because it's a CFL event."

The cost to take out the grass and install artificial turf is estimated at $2.6 million.

Crews will start digging out the grass in the next week or so, with the new turf expected to be installed by some time in May.

City council says the move will save $80,000 a year.
