I'm really looking forward to some outdoor games this summer. I've had the chance to see some games at McMahon and it's just a great atmosphere in the summertime with the sun shining and a beer or two on hand.

McMahon was amazing for the Grey Cup ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

The BC Lions Football Club announced today that GM and head coach Wally Buono has extended his contract with the organization to the end of the 2013 season.

Buono was entering the final year of his current contract after originally joining the club in 2003 and will undoubtedly add to his CFL lead in coaching wins over the next four seasons.

“Wally’s accomplishments over more than three decades as a player, coach and GM are unparalleled,” said Lions owner, president and CEO David Braley. “His commitment to excellence and his ability to get the very best from everyone in the organization make him highly respected across our league and I am excited about what the future holds for our club with Wally leading the way.”

Good on Buck...although I'm glad we let him go, I wish him success wherever he lands.

When veteran quarterback Buck Pierce was let go by the BC Lions last month many thought his professional playing days were numbered.

Funny what a month will do. Pierce is now being courted by not only CFL teams, but NFL clubs as well.

The NFL's Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers have all expressed interest in the 28-year-old.

Several Canadian teams passed on a trade with Pierce and the Lions in March, but now he is being sought by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes.

The Blue Bombers are said to be the most serious in contract negotiations with the California native and are expected to make him a contract offer.

Pierce was taking part in a pro day set up for players from the University of Hawaii at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Pierce's old boss, BC Lions coach Wally Buono, called to wish his ex-quarterback all the best.

The Lions were the only team Pierce has played for professionally. In five seasons with the Lions Pierce had 692 completions for 8,734 passing yards and threw for 48 touchdowns, adding 1,015 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns.

Not sure if it's been reported yet - Barrin Simpson to Saskatchewan. Damn, that's a tad bit worrisome to me.

And, in Deb's stalker news: saw Paris Jackson in Surrey yesterday (near the practice facility). Looks fit, trim and ready to go!

(And yes, LH, the 11th. Does that mean you're taking me?)

If Pierce doesn't find a home this year, he'll for sure have one next year when Ottawa comes back in the league. 3 more quarterback positions will be available and he'll grab one for sure.

Esks news....

After four years with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Lawrence Gordon is heading west.

The veteran import defensive back signed with the Edmonton Eskimos on Tuesday as a free agent.

Last season, Gordon had 19 defensive tackles in 11 games with Hamilton. He was the Ticats' nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie back in 2006.

"Lawrence Gordon's calling cards are his versatility and CFL experience," said Edmonton General Manager and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia in a statement. "His signing adds valuable depth to our defensive secondary".

Gordon has 161 defensive tackles and four interceptions over his four seasons in the CFL.

Got my seats last week. Section whatever, Seats 5/6, Row HH. Between the 15-20 yard lines. I know I'm well covered!

This stadium should be a fun novelty, we could have beautiful weather way into September. That would be awesome. In 2011 I'll enjoy returning to my front row upper bowl seats.

I had the option of row A upper bowl, or row E lower bowl, so I took the lower bowl so I could better see the chearleaders, and possibly one year catch a game used ball.

Ah crap...

CFL players told to prepare for possible work stoppage

By Herb Zurkowsky, Canwest News ServiceApril 7, 2010

Canadian Football League players are being advised by their union the possibility of a work stoppage exists this June. And that means they should be saving their money.

Stu Laird, the president of the CFL Players' Association, has sent two confidential e-mails to every league player -- including one last Monday -- painting a bleak picture prior to the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement June 5, one day before the scheduled start of training camp.

Canwest News Service has obtained copies of those e-mails, along with the CFLPA's latest proposals.

"It continues to be the opinion of the executive committee that a CFL management lockout of the players is a very real possibility," Laird wrote. "Players should ensure that they're taking the necessary financial steps at this time, in anticipation that there may be no training camp paycheques on June 6, 2010."

Laird stresses to the players the need to remain unified as they enter this potential tenuous state.

The CFLPA's bargaining committee is scheduled to meet with the league's Players Relations Committee in Toronto on April 26. There have been no negotiations since late October. That has led to charges from the CFLPA that the PRC isn't seriously attempting to negotiate and resolve the issue.

Although the two sides met in Edmonton on Feb. 25, no negotiations occurred. Instead, the PRC requested clarification on a number of points contained in the CFLPA proposal.

With so much at stake on both sides, it would be surprising if a settlement isn't reached. The majority of players are paid only from June through November and are hardly striking it rich. The average CFL salary is slightly below $60,000. Indeed, based on last season's salary survey, 22 players were paid less than $42,000, according to the CFLPA.

At the same time, the league's two primary revenue streams come from television, which brings an annual yield of about $15 million, and gate revenues. That means the owners -- even some of the western-based community-owned clubs -- would also be affected by any potential work interruption.

But it's clear the CFL means business this time. The league was represented by Edmonton Eskimos president Rick LeLacheur, who worked in conjunction with several team governors, on the current four-year deal that's about to expire. Hugh Campbell, a former Eskimos player, head coach and executive, helped negotiate the previous deal. This time, however, the CFL has hired labour lawyer Stephen Shamie.

The contentious issues appear to be the percentage players receive from revenues taken in by the CFL. Players receive 56 per cent of defined team revenues on a leaguewide basis. The league wants to eliminate that percentage. The CFLPA will agree -- but only for the first three years of a four-year agreement.

The CFLPA also predictably is proposing an increase to compensation. The minimum salary of $41,000 last season would increase to $42,000 and go up by $1,000 annual increments. It also wants Grey Cup shares to increase to $20,000 (winners) and $10,000 (losers), up from $16,000 and $8,000, respectively.

Another proposal includes the $4.2-million salary cap increasing to $4.4 million this season and rising to $4.7 million by 2013. Also, the CFLPA will agree to a drug policy provided it receives one year's notice. But since the CFL estimates the cost of drug testing would be between $350,000 and $400,000 annually, the CFLPA believes the expenditure is better spent elsewhere. And the union is calling for revenue sharing.

There has been only one work stoppage in CFL history -- June 1974, when players went on strike. Rookie recruits were flown in by the league in an effort to break the union. The veterans responded by establishing picket lines at all teams' training camps. This weakened the league's resolve and, within three weeks, a new three-year CBA was ratified.

Wow that would be really terrible!

Not only would not having CFL really, really suck... But I'm sure there's plenty of guys in the league that really genuinely need those paycheques. I really hope they can sort that out.

CFL doesn't make much money. A lost season could fold the league.
