Sharpshooter
Hes been playing pretty well lately. I liked his rushes and pinches tonight. They were mostly at the right time, plus he had better communication with the forwrds who covered his spot on the point when he came in tonight. Well done all around I thought. I think one thing that may be evolving in his game, is perhaps his decision making, particularly, with his pinches. Now, a couple of solid games is encouraging and I hope to see a trend as opposed to blips on the radar of good decision making. A couple games do not make a season of consistency, so hopefully, it continues. I think the forwards covering whe he pinches, makes all the difference...it seems, from what I can gather. Good observation though. So yeah, once again...solid effort and showing tonight.
Sharpshooter
Well Bieksa did have a average game, not real good not real bad he still needs to be more asertive with the puck his nonchalant flip passes gets him into trouble all the time its like he is trying to be cool. Right, he's trying to look cool out there...you've discovered his big secret....well done.
Barry_Wilkins
That's what happens when you hit a guy from the side who has the boards beside him to absorb and reflect the force back out. Watch the hit again, and you'll see Hemsky get hit, then hit the boards and Bieksa, essentially getting the pressure reflected back at him causing him to spill because he wasn't ready for it or because he didn't have the same object behind him to absorb the force. Newton's Third Law of Motion....the more you know. I don't remember this particular play, so you may have a point. But the fact of the matter is that Bieksa is simply too small to be an effective hitter. This is one area in which I have some sympathy for the guy. He wants to paste forwards into the glass, but what usually happens is that he does have the leverage, surprise factor, or angle, lines up his man, then proceeds to bounce off him, or at best, jostle the guy so that both lose the battle for the puck. When Salo gets back, for instance, watch the contrast here. Sami, at 6'3", just squeezes the guy off the puck at the boards, gets the puck, then makes a simple short pass to a teammate, and we're on our way on a counterattack. It's the little plays like this in a game that really show a player's true worth. Like I say, in this case I don't blame Bieksa, he's just too small to be an effective defensive D man (leaving aside all his other errors for which he could improve upon.) You have apoint in that he does tend to play bigger than he is. I gues he just likes to hit. I doesn't always work out in his favour. But, the thing that makes me a fan of his, is that I appreciate he doesn't realise he isn't as big as he may think he is, and keeps on hitting anyways. Call it too focused/insane to know better ..like a junkyard dog...getting after a bone from a bigger dog. I can't compare him to Salo, because of the obvious size difference and advantage for Salo. But Bieksa is comparable to Ballard, and Hammer...and I think he's so far holding his own when in comparison....though time will tell, and I have much bigger expectations for Hammer than Juice in the prolific hitter departement. But, Juice does his job...and i'm glad he seeming to do it pretty well lately.
Don't.Mess.With.Kes<3
This is getting ridiculous. May as well call this the 'kevin bieksa post-game thread' since all everyone does on here is critique bieksa's play after every game. There is such a huge microscope on the guy its almost impossible for him to have a good game without someone noticing one mistake he does. When is this thread going to end?? When he's finally traded? (Kinda a given when salo comes back)

At least you can enjoy one night of satisfaction from Bieksa's play tonight. At least it shut up a few people around here...for now.

There is such a huge microscope on the guy its almost impossible for him to have a good game without someone noticing one mistake he does. When is this thread going to end?? When he's finally traded? (Kinda a given when salo comes back) Is it a given? Let's assume for a second that Salo comes back before the end of the regular season, which isn't a given because he's now 36. How many times can this guy just bounce back from injury? Anyway, let's also assume that MG decides to keep KB for the playoff run. Edler Ehrhoff <- the offensive pairing, will get most minutes Hamhuis Bieksa <- shutdown pairing, out against other team's top lines Ballard Salo <- injury recovery pairing, less ice time Alberts <- Very solid #7 Trade or demote Rome and Parent to the AHL, saving $1.675M Samuelsson stays in AV's dog house and get's traded, saving $2.5M Then recall Tambo, and all of a sudden we're very close to being cap compliant. Of course, who knows, by the time Salo's ready to come back, someone else could be on LTIR. There's no way right now to say with certainty that Bieksa will be traded. For arguments sake, say that Beiksa does get traded. Then the core looks like: Edler Ehrhoff <- Top offensive pairing Hamhuis Ballard <- Shut down pairing Salo Alberts <- Should be decent third pairing, Salo with reduced minutes due to comeback Rome <- Not terrible, but so far not as good as he was at the end of last season OK, not as deep but also not terrible. What happens if in his first playoff game, Salo throws his shoulder out again while taking a routine slap-shot? Then your playoff D-core looks like: Edler Ehrhoff <- Top offensive pairing Ballard Hamhuis <- Shut down pairing Alberts Rome <- Alberts might not be so solid if he has Rome on his pairing instead of Bieksa Parent <- Needs a year in the AHL, development was rushed That isn't looking so deep anymore, and no RH shots. IMO, Salo's been good for us, especially on the PP, but he's very injury-prone, and is now 36. On top of that, he hasn't skated in months. How long will it take him to catch up to mid-season level? How can you bank on this guy staying healthy for a stretch of games? Will he be even more injury prone from not playing all year (I'm thinking groin strains, muscle injuries etc) ? RUPERTKBD
Bieksa seems to be getting worse as the season goes along. Can't wait until Sami Salo and Dan Hamhuis come back. Then we don't have a weak spot on te backend, plus alot of depth guys that could be playing at the NHL level else where. The gene pool just got a bit shallower.... Prove otherwise. He had 3 assists last game. The only game he's been on the stat sheet positively. Also, the only game he didn't register a single hit. 1 decent game hasn't righted the ship. Against a mediocre team at that. He's had more than one "decent game". You're just too blinded by your hatred to see it.
Finaddict
Now you are just making crap up, Bieksa is a lightweight, last game, in the 1st period, he hit one guy, it was off side , but Bieksa bounced off him and landed on his butt, I laughed. later in the third period he got run over while attempting a check. Bieksa is not an effective defender nor a feared checker. His upside is as a supposedly offensive defenceman. If he has more games like the Edm. game, he will be doing his job. Ask anyone who ever played, what's worse getting hit by a 195 lb Dman or one 20 or 25 lbs more? IMO, Edler, Alberts and Salo + Rome hit harder simply because they weigh more, Ballard is a more skilled hitter,,(hip check king), and Hamhuis was a highly sought after shut down guy so obviously is more difficult to play against than BXa. Nope if Bxa isn't putting up points, all he is doing is making a big sucking sound. It was that hulking monster, Hemsky that Bieksa went bouncing off of. There is more involved than just mass. Anyway the difference between Bieksa (198 lbs) and Alberts (218 lbs) is 10.1 % increase in mass. The game results if a canuck Dman played the entire game (players who've played 12 Games (TOI and +/- stats from nhl.com)) for an average of 49.19 ESmin, 5.12 PPmin and 5.68 SHmin per 60 min Bieksa 3.32 GF, 2.28 GA (+1.04) Ehrhoff 3.10 GF, 2.15 GA (+0.95) Edler 2.78 GF, 2.60 GA (+0.18) Alberts 1.38 GF, 1.31 GA (+0.07) Alberts is hurt since he hasn't played any PP time this year (16 seconds) but there is no way you can say Bieksa is not contributing to the teams success nor is he sucking. From this it is very hard to say Bieksa is sucking at the shut down role.
Finaddict
I had a relative from Ontario (ya, a Laffs fan) over to watch the game last night. He doesn't watch the Canucks much, like most Easterners and he kept asking me why # 3 keeps giving the puck to the opposition in his own end. He kept saying that he figured that he didn't like the Canuck's goalie I didn't have a good answer for him.

grumpworsley
I really can't figure this guy out. He plays like a forward who is being punished by being stuck on defense. My guess is that is where his talent might be. Although he usually never really has a terrible game. He has moments of complete positional and mental breakdown. Skating up the ice last night he does a drop pass between his legs to I think it was errhoff. What was that all about. Just lots of little stuff. Might want to take a gamble and put him up 3rd line wing and call up Connaughton for defense now that Desbiens is out. I am sure he has something to offer just haven't figured it out yet. EmployeeoftheMonth
So I had a relative from Quebec (ya, a Canadiens fan) over to watch the game last night. He doesn't watch the Canucks much, like most Easterners and he kept asking me why # 3 keeps making good plays and never getting credit for it, especially when it comes to saving a play in the oppositions end. He kept saying that many Canucks fans must not really know how this game works and are more me first west coasters like he always here's about. I told him he was probably right. Ahem
