this is the type of player that this team needs, he is a monster, and skates like a monster, YEAH HE WILL BE A great 4th liner or 3rd liner. A guy who can actaully chip in, get you a decent 15-20 points, with his intimating size and skill.

Griener > VEY, burrows, Dorsett, etem

I like that Grenier changed his game to improve his chances of making the show.  Coming out of junior he was a skill guy.  Now he's a skill guy, who bangs and fights too.  I think he's most certainly better than Etem, Vey, and Burrows, at the role he will play.  I think he could support Dorsett - much like Prust was not successful in doing.

You are telling me something I didn't ask though desi.

I never commented on Grenier's ability to help the team I just said he will have to wait his turn. Benning said it himself, he is not going to bring players up if they are likely not going to get a game. It's not fair to the player or to Utica who are still in a position to get a playoff place. I like Grenier too and Pedan and Zalewski but they are young and they are getting big minutes and good coaching where they are meantime.

As far as your statement of opinion goes I am far from convinced he is better than any of these players. Burrows, despite his points drought is still a constant menace to the opposition, imo he operates at a higher intensity and compete level (still) than half the team.

Etem and Dorsett are similar in that respect and whether you like Dorsett or not he is still the only guy on the team who night after night constantly holds opposition players to account.

I understand your impatience but relax bud, these guys will all get their chance, as I say, they are young and it's not like they are at their peak yet by any means.

Grenier with another two points tonight; ups his totals to 13-24-37, now just 3 points from the club lead. Hopefully he is getting an eyeful of Higgins, to see what an NHL player is like. Much as I would like to see him get another call-up, I agree with Alfstonker; he's in a good place and getting good coaching. Next season, though, he needs to assert himself and make the team, I don't see Vancouver giving him anymore contracts past this. He either makes the team as a 4th liner (which I think he is well capable of) or he likely gets listed as a career AHLer, and goes the way of guys like Jason Krog or Bobby Sanguenetti; good players but just not NHL material.

Is Grenier still waiver eligible next year?  If not I guess next year is his last chance to prove himself as I'm thinking he would get claimed off waivers.

13th forward next year IMO.

Is he waiver eligible though?  I'm thinking Willie's best friend Vey would be the 13th forward. Unless McCann is sent down which is a possibility.

I think McCann is sent down, Vey is traded/walks and Grenier (who yes, would require waivers) is 13th.

Ok cool. I kinda see that same scenario. My only concern is Willie agreeing to trade Vey. If that happens then Grenier can definitely get a spot. Unless we go after a high priced UFA. Then it gets tricky.

Trading Burrows would be another possibility to open up a roster spot.  Not sure we'd get any takers though with his $4.5m cap hit.

Burrows will probably be waived or bought out IMO.

Burrows seems to think that his days as a Canuck are coming to an end (re the recent articles on his future - btw great attitude by him about wanting to help the kids and not be seen as the grumpy old guy).  His buyout cap hit is 2.5M for 2016/17 and 1M in 2017/18 so I could imagine them being willing to retain up to 50% in salary to facilitate a trade.

WillieD said last week that Vey is in a situation where he is fighting for a spot on the team but that there were other guys too.

Zalewski is also another waiver eligible player and they are also bringing in Rodin who will likely be like Tryamkin (ie NHL or back to Europe).  Gaunce is the only Comet competing for a spot that is not waiver eligible.

Ahhh I forgot about Zalewski. If he has to clear waivers then we might need to keep him on the big club as well. I like him as a 4C. So it looks like in order to get both Grenier and Zalewski on the big club we'd have to get rid of both Vey and Burrows. Gonna be an interesting offseason especially if we obtain a high priced UFA like Ladd or Lucic.  I have a feeling they will sign Rodin and then trade his rights. I don't see him as a fit on the team. Another small skilled forward doesn't work for me.

Zalewski is interesting, he didn't seem out of place at all. I'm thinking Canucks won't qualify Vey and will let him walk. He was part of the garage sale 7, likely he isn't in future plans.

Grenier, Pedan, Grandlund, Zalewski all require waivers next year so it should be interesting.

I am hard pressed to think of someone playing consistently better than Vey at present. Zalewski doesn't even come close. He's a 4th liner, while Vey filled in admirably for Hank - seriously would Zalewski be able to do that? I doubt it.

Isn't that the thing though - having the right spot available.

WillieD and Henrik speak of how unfair the Sutter injury is to Horvat so I doubt they'll have Sutter convert to wing and Granlund seems to have claimed the final C spot for now - WillieD keeps on repeating he wants Virtanen with Granlund.

So with no open spots at C - Zalewski or Grenier might be seen as better suited for a bottom-6 RW position over Vey.  Both are right-shots like Vey and Zalewski can play C.  There's also Rodin and Etem who shoot left but prefer to play RW.  Dorsett plays both.

Grenier is apparently the next call-up and Zalewski will also be getting a look this season.  I kind of wonder if it's really helping Vey to play C until the end of the season when the open spots seem to be on the wing.

Note - It's in the post-practice of Thursday (or Friday) towards the end if you want to listen to the quote.  There was a similar one in the Province a few days earlier where he spoke of Vey being well aware that he is fighting for his career.

*Okposo :P

I think we might be able to slip Zalewski through waivers like we did with Markstrom last preseason.

I'd LOVE to see something like this at forward to start:

Sedin, Sedin, Okposo

Baer, Horvat, Hansen

Virtanen, Sutter, Rodin

Etem, Granlund, Dorsett

Grenier/Zalewski spare

Burrows waived or bought out, Vey traded or walking, Kenins (sadly) back to Europe, Grenier or Zalewski (hopefully slipping through waivers) in Utica.

Depending on how Rodin fares, you can call either Gaunce or Grenier/Zalewski back up (depending on who's going) if Rodin falls on his face.

I’m on board with that with that line up.  Okposo, Lucic, Ladd, Eriksson to me all fit a top 6 roll, though I prefer the first 2.  I would like to see Rodin be giving some real good opportunity (25-30 games) with the twins.  It will be a good test to see if he’s got a future as a top 6 in the NHL.

Sedin, Sedin, Rodin

Lucic, Sutter, Hansen

Baer, Horvat, Virtanen

Etem, Granlund, Dorsett

Grenier/Zalewski spare

We’d still have depth, and enough players that can all rotate within the top 9 to cover if we need to fill a hole.  I think the Granlund trade really spelled the end of Vey.

Leave him for expansion draft ,some buzz this morning by a tsn guy that it would happen .the NHL brass has hired a crew to specially undertake the task of organizing such a draft. My hope it is amounted shortly ,an Las Vegas an Seattle are admitted into the league this would free up cap space a shed a few vets who need a new home.

i hope the broad hint on TSN is true an happens fast we need some good news

Some good points there.

Don't get me wrong I would love to see Grenier get a decent try out.

I am also one of those fans that don't believe we should stop playing intelligent hockey when we get to the 4th line. Vey is not small, he's 6'-0 and between 190 and 200lbs depending on where you look. That is more than adequate for the 4th line imo.

So many people on here keep on saying he doesn't fit but night after night he proves he does. Good coaches design their system around their best players not the other way round (see Tortorella)
