odd that they allow him to play all 3 games then recall him. Should have sent Gaunce down after saturdays game and called up grenier... Gaunce could have played yesterday and Grenier would have had some time to rest.

But im just a fan, not the gm

*Okposo :P

I think we might be able to slip Zalewski through waivers like we did with Markstrom last preseason.

I'd LOVE to see something like this at forward to start:

Sedin, Sedin, Okposo

Baer, Horvat, Hansen

Virtanen, Sutter, Rodin

Etem, Granlund, Dorsett

Grenier/Zalewski spare

Burrows waived or bought out, Vey traded or walking, Kenins (sadly) back to Europe, Grenier or Zalewski (hopefully slipping through waivers) in Utica.

Depending on how Rodin fares, you can call either Gaunce or Grenier/Zalewski back up (depending on who's going) if Rodin falls on his face.

True about Zalewski, who might not have a lot of interest but could slip through early in the waiver period while teams have too many players already. Related to that, it might be wise for us to have more options ourselves (both contract spots and players we can send down without risk of losing them) to claim some potentially good players when other teams shorten their camp rosters in the fall.

But I'd love Okoposo too, even if grabbing him means adding one more to an already crowded roster. Moving Hansen for a nice return (as much as I'm a fan) would help if we really feel we can be players for a top 6 RW in free agency. Players like Burrows, Vey and Higgins being gone as well just makes more room for the players we'll already need on our rosters due to waivers like Grenier.

Guys like Gaunce and McCann as pressure - the oft mentioned competition in camp -  for those already listed is where we want to see it without gifting anyone spots. Grenier will still have to work at it or risk losing his chance, much like Vey did in the fall with McCann stepping up.

It was technically not possible.  Gaunce was an emergency call-up so as soon as the team had 12 healthy forwards he had to be sent back down.  If Grenier was up that would be 13 healthy F and Gaunce's emergency call-up would have to be converted into a regular call-up.  The problem is that after the TDL teams are only allowed 4 regular call-ups so they didn't want to use on Gaunce.

It's an interesting point. Why not keep Gaunce a little longer, or send him down and call Grenier up for Saturday to Grenier doesn't play in 3 AHL games straight? Even working with the AHL team to note you want to call Grenier up after the weekend so he gets a rest one of those games would help make sure he's being set up for success.

They're still sending Gaunce down before Hansen's back from injury, which is why Gaunce was the emergency call up to begin with. Even if they'd left Grenier in Utica over the weekend after sending Gaunce back, Gaunce could have gotten in games and allowed Utica to rest Grenier in at least one of them knowing he would be called up today.

I’m on board with that with that line up.  Okposo, Lucic, Ladd, Eriksson to me all fit a top 6 roll, though I prefer the first 2.  I would like to see Rodin be giving some real good opportunity (25-30 games) with the twins.  It will be a good test to see if he’s got a future as a top 6 in the NHL.

Sedin, Sedin, Rodin

Lucic, Sutter, Hansen

Baer, Horvat, Virtanen

Etem, Granlund, Dorsett

Grenier/Zalewski spare

We’d still have depth, and enough players that can all rotate within the top 9 to cover if we need to fill a hole.  I think the Granlund trade really spelled the end of Vey.

Rodin's going to have to earn a spot beside the twins, starting likely in the middle 6 IMO.

We will see. Him being 25 already and going to be on a show me if you can make it in the NHL type scenerio I don't think there will be much earning, he will be giving all the opportunity. Either he's a top 6 forward or he's not.  Much like panarin.

Yeah... I don't see it happening. He'd have to come in to the pre-season looking like he was shot out of a cannon and like a top NHL player IMO. As great as that would be, I think it's a tad optimistic.

He'll get a good shot playing in the middle 6 on either Horvat/Sutter's line IMO.

Grenier is also an emergency recall.  Gaunce was on his way back because the team had 12 healthy forwards against Nashville so he couldn't stay but then Burrows was no longer good to go so they had to call back someone to not be left with only 11 healthy forwards.  Gaunce was probably already on the flight back so they called-up Grenier instead of having Gaunce land and come back.

Grenier was anyway going to be a call-up and the Burrows injury simply precipitated the decision.  If Burrows is good to go on Wednesday - I'd guess that Grenier's emergency call-up will be converted into a regular call-up.  If they can hold on to the 4 regular ones it might leave them some flexibility to bring back some players towards the end of the season.

Why not call up Subban with one of those regular ones, or is management worried he might play too well, and hurt our draft position?

Because he's likely another year+ from playing in the NHL.

The point is less about the emergency recall and more about Grenier being called up to play a 4th game in as many days. Hansen isn't back yet so they could have kept Gaunce another day for last night's game then called up Grenier to get a run starting in Wednesday's game.

Playing 3 games in 3 days is not allowed in the NHL. If Grenier plays tonight it will be his 4th game in 4 days. Plus the SYR to VAN flight.

I cite this as the reason for his play yesterday. He wasn't even that bad. Vrbata had a worse game.
