From what I knew of the situation the LA Kings are just lucky to have had Doughty sign an 8 year deal.

The whole reason Doughty wasn't taking their offers was because he wanted a 5 year deal, from what I've seen, and The Kings weren't prepared to offer him that.

Kings would have been well served to just trade him. They could have got a fantastic return for him, and they've already got Jack Johnson signed long term.

I think its a business, first and foremost. The owner wants to make money, the performer wants to get paid and the third parties (parking beer and hotdogs jersey's ball caps and whatever) all want to get a slice of that action. When it all comes down to it...would any other actor have made Kaizer Soze/Verbal as great a character, or was Kevin Spacey worth every penny to the producer of that entertainment product?

I don't begrudge labour the money they earn producing the various goods and services that owners profit from, this is even more true in sports. You can't sell a Doughty jersey unless you actually have a Doughty on your roster. Is he worth the contract? probably not...I don't think any individual is worth millions a year..but in context of the overall market for the NHL product, this guy is worth every penny or else he wouldn't have gotten the contract.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are very excited to add Fedor Tyutin to the organization and the Defence Corps this year. Fedor is a veteran top pair defenceman who will receive a top 4 role and minutes with the team. We are sad to see a young prospective talent like Blake go, and we wish him much success in the St. Louis organization.

The Penguins are also contemplating two seperate trades as well. Stay tuned.

From all reports it's not the money he had issue with. I was being locked in for 9 years. You keep ignoring that fact.

He wanted to sign a deal that would allow him to hit free agency at a much younger age, thus giving him freedom to shop his services elsewhere while still in his prime, not at the age of 31.

So no, he didn't hold out over $200,000 but rather over 4 or 5 years of free agency. I think you underestimate how important that is to players.

So in the end, Doughty gave in more than Lombardi did. He gave up 5 years for $200,000 more money. Lombardi gave up $200,000 for one less year.

Actually, I`m not ignoring that at all.

The Kings had an 8 year deal tabled before. I'd also heard they had a 6 year deal tabled as well. The only difference between the previous 8 year deal and this one is the extra $200,000 per season.

Fantastic player, but I think an awful lot of his character came out this summer, and not for the better.

As a guy who`s worked as an agent in this game, I don`t underestimate how important free agency is to a player. If free agency was his driving purpose, he should have taken the 6 year term. He would have gotten closer to his goal of hitting UFA earlier. By the way, wanting to hit UFA earlier shouldn`t really make the Kings feel comfortable about him wanting to stay when he hits UFA eligibility. Especially given his contract negotiation history.

EDIT: In any event, it`s not a ridiculous contract (relatively speaking I suppose) for a player like Doughty. Just the way it went down, I don`t think either side comes out looking very good.

I am glad Doughty signs and I hope lethunder gets his whole 9 mil worth out of him....because anything less than an Orr type season including a Conn Smythe and he's drastically overpaid. :P

/ Edit: I am ok with the suspension that Brendan Smith got. I understand why the decision was made and it does not tarnish his future for our organization.

TRAINING CAMP REPORT:

The New Jersey Devils are rumoured to have made a move involving their Goaltending and an announcement could be made as early as today.

On the ice, the Devils have a few tough decisions to make in regards to filling out their forward spots for the Regular Season. Forwards Cory Emmerton, Carl Hagelin, Gustav Nyquist, Joakim Andersson, and Tomas Kubalik are all making a name for themselves. It will be interesting to see who makes the team though Tomas Kubalik is giving himself the best chance at this point.

On defense the Devils appear heavy with at least 8 defensemen that will be carried on the team this season. One report has a trade potentially in place involving the defense.

By the end of the weekend the Devils will have their Front Office Budget and Active Roster announced.
