Pressure Mounts As Deadline Looms

Writtten by Tyler Merkel

Hallways are quiet at the TD Garden, where once a stressless social commotion would have roared this time last season. Now it`s all closed doors, silence and a strained atmosphere. The tenuous sound of a phone ringing carries extra stress, as bad news reigns in recent months.

A tough season start lead to an exciting and strong December, but quickly plateaued into hauntingly calm waters. As the team sinks in the standings, fans and critics swirl through wistful dreams to demanding rumours of trade and change. A feeling lurks and lingers, that some action must be taken to change the current course.

Both Mike Mottau and David Schlemko have fallen to injury in the past month, leaving a 5 man limping defense. The top two pairings are strong and dependable, but only able to hold the line for so long before fatigue and reasonable expectation voice their presence. Boston is openly searching for a strong playoff bound third pairing player, and has a first round pick and prospects to offer for a good return.

The forward core in Boston, though seemingly capacity with talent, seems no less than stagnant in these tough times. Poor production and lack of fight see them lumbering about their posts, taking no direct aim or course and failing to see the looming day of reckoning as post season approaches. Some finalizing UFA`s have been rumoured available, as Greensman looks to revitalize with a transfusion of new blood and ambition.

Goaltending is as troubled as defense in the Boston roster. Cam Ward has played without backup for over a month now, and should he falter, there is no cavalry available to save the day. Boucher is expected to return, but the expectations on Ward are heavy now, as even the best of goaltenders need to have a moment to catch their breath.

Realistically, things may have to change. Barring a miracle, Boston will have to take some action in order to cling to the last playoff spot in the East. Greensman has been rumoured to be targeting players throughout the league, and subsequently contacting GM`s. Any team looking to gear towards young talent should contact Greensman immediately. Moves will be made in short order, or there is a looming possibility that the Bruins may turn seller in the final hours before the deadline.

Report: With the mediocre season that Vancouver is going through, GM Cal and Gary has decided to retool and look forward to next year. Sources close to the team are confirming that Vancouver feels that they do not have enough depth up front to even come close to challenging for the Cup this year and feel like they need to get younger as well up front. Players such as Alex Steen, Andrew Brunette, Nick Leddy, Corey Potter, and Bruno Gervais have been made available for help up front and younger, high upside players in general.

Note for teams using waivers to make roster moves:

A player can't be moved from your roster until he clears waivers. So if you place a player on waivers to clear a roster spot for a recalled player on Jan.5th at 3:00pm, and call up the new player at the same time, the new player won't be added to your roster until Jan.6th, because that's when the first player clears waivers and is sent to the minors, or is claimed by another team.
