I hate to say it, but if they'd just let one organization take over, there'd be none of this kind of thing. If the government doesn't have the stones to take charge of the drug scene and regulate it in a comprehensive manner, they ought to just let whoever does have them stones to just take over and hold position on it. The alternative is that whenever the authorities take down anyone big, the little folk start shooting each other over the open positions, trying to become the new big folk. That's how it's been these past few decades now. The results are really ugly from a law and order perspective so I don't know why they would leave the market in what are obviously dangerous substances up to the black market.

There's no way this can truly be considered good news. At any given time, a casino has people coming in an out of it and for someone to use an automatic weapon in broad daylight, their actions suggest that they were prepared to hurt any bystanders that may have gotten in the way of their goal.

In the end of the day, I don't think the police and/or government response will be one that truly deals with the underlying issues at hand and at best, only the shooter will be prosecuted.

Gang bangers are very budget minded and bullets are expensive. It is important that they hit their targets and no innocents so that they don't waste bullets. Also the shooters know that if they hit innocents than the law would chase them down even harder than if it was just another gang member.

Reports indicate well-known B.C. gang member Jonathan Bacon — the eldest of the notorious Bacon Brothers — was killed in a brazen daylight shooting outside a Kelowna hotel on Sunday.

Police say one person was killed and several others were wounded when a gunman sprayed bullets at a vehicle outside the downtown hotel and casino.

Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the victim, but several media outlets say the gang leader, with a long criminal history in the Lower Mainland, was killed.

Newspaper reports also say Larry Amero, a full-patch member of the Hells Angels, was critically injured in the attack.

Just before 3 p.m. PT, witnesses said, a green SUV pulled up behind a white Porsche SUV outside the Delta Grand Hotel, just as the Porsche was leaving the hotel's front entrance. Armed men in hoods jumped out of the green SUV, witnesses said, and started firing.

Masked gunman

Witnesses told several media outlets they saw a masked gunman on foot fire shots from an automatic weapon.

"It sounded like, to me, a building was just collapsing around the corner," said one witness, who wished to be identified only as Lance.

Jonathon Bacon, seen here in 2008, was reportedly killed by a gunman in Kelowna on Sunday. CBC

"It was so loud, it didn't sound like gunshots at first. got a little closer, and then I seen a guy in all black and a mask with an assault rifle. He was unloading at this Porsche Cayenne over there and then they took off, so we started walking up to see what was going on and then there was people coming out of the car and bloody."

"There was two bursts of sort of sub-machine gun fire and then that was it," said witness Eddie Shortridge.

The driver of the Porsche tried to flee but crashed into the side of the hotel's conference centre, near the Lake City Casino.

The green SUV used in the getaway headed up Cawston Avenue and disappeared, police said.

Sometime after 6 p.m., the RCMP located a burned-out Ford Explorer in Lake Country, a community about 25 kilometres north of downtown Kelowna.

RCMP did not confirm the vehicle was the same one seen leaving the scene of the shooting.

Targeted shooting

It's believed five people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. On Monday morning, members of the Vancouver Police Department and RCMP were at the hospital. They would not release any information about patients being treated there, but did confirm they were there in relation to the Kelowna shooting.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed the facility was under restricted access for several hours Sunday night, meaning police were monitoring who was coming and going, but officials said the hospital was not under an official lockdown.

Police would not say who they believe is responsible for the shooting or if it's believed to be gang-related, but they believe the shooting was targeted and that members of the general public are not at risk.

"As you can imagine, a lot of information needs to be dealt with before facts can be stated," said Const. Steve Holmes with the Kelowna RCMP.

Police have not said how many suspects they are looking for, but anyone who witnessed the shooting — or has photographs or video of the incident — is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP detachment.

Retribution feared

Meanwhile, gang experts say the shooting in Kelowna will spur more violence.

Doug Spencer, a former Vancouver police officer who has been involved in more than 1,000 gang investigations, said there will almost certainly be retribution for the shooting of a Hells Angels member.

"If they know who did it, there's going to be payback, period, with those guys," Spencer said. "They've earned their reputation.

"[Jonathan] Bacon's brothers, they're still in jail and stuff so there's not much they can do themselves but I'm sure they're gonna be reaching out and trying to find out who did their brother."

Police have said Jonathan Bacon, along with his brothers Jamie and Jarrod, control the Red Scorpions gang, which was at the centre of a bloody gang war that played out on the streets of Metro Vancouver nearly three years ago.

Jonathan and his youngest brother, Jamie, have both been targets of attempted slayings in the past. Jamie is in prison, awaiting trial on charges in the Surrey Six slayings.
