Re-united Once Again

Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired Jarome Iginla from the Minnesota Wilds today. After a long 2 years since the Winter Olympics in 2010, Sidney Crosby and Jarome Iginla have been re-united once again. Many have may remember that "Golden Assist" that Iginla passed to in OT in the Gold Medal game versus the US team and that was an amazing play by the rugged powerforward.Penguins are really desperate right now, the team has not gelled since start of the season and GM Zach Parise had to pull the trigger.Penguins are sitting in 8th spot in Eastern Conference ,just barely hanging on to that spot.

"First off and foremost , we would like to wish best of luck to Chris Stewart and Tyler Seguin on their new teams, it was a tough decision for me to let go of Chris Stewart, but changes had to be made. I know we are better then this, we just haven't found the consistency at all this season, and its really tough to watch your team win one and lose one, thats how we are not suppose to play. We should be consistent with the great group of players we had before. Now I had no choice to pull some strings and get us back to consistency," said GM Parise.

Penguins also acquired F Drew Stafford from the New York Islanders. "Many people may wonder why I have traded Stafford for Seguin, well were a team that gives second chances to players, and we saw Stafford playing on the 4th line on the Islanders, he shouldn't be playing on the 4th line at all he has some skill and talent when he is used properly," he also added, "I may have been the loser of 2 of these deals and everyone thinks that, so be it, whatever dumb trade I have made it worked out perfectly at the end," said GM Parise.

Penguins also acquired F Jason Arnott,Jim O'brien and Mike Hoffman from the Ottawa Senators inexchange for Pascal Dupuis,Brian Rolston and prospect Kyle Beach.

"We saw something in Jason that could help this team out, He is a big center, who isn't afraid to use his body.We believe he will excel with the great group of young players."

When asked if GM Parise was done wheeling and dealing he replied," I am done for now and will wait until the trade deadline approaches, and if we are still in the running of a playoff spot then I could possibly add in some players, but as of right no more trades until the trade deadline."

Detroit Red Wings Mid-Season Report

2012: 20-16-5 - 45 points

2013: 21-16-4 - 46 points

The Good

  • The Red Wings overcame a poor 9-11-0 start and now sit 2nd in the Central Division, and 4th in the West. The Red Wings must now make sure they avoid repeating their disastrous 2nd half slide in 2012 (13-20-8 in final 41 games)

  • The Red Wings powerplay is tied for 3rd in the league with a deadly 27% success rate, behind the Coyotes (28%) and Devils (30%)

  • Numerous players have already surpassed last season's production or on pace for new career highs. E.g.

Paul Stastny: 43-23-34-57, +8 // ('12: 82-22-31-53, -10)

TJ Oshie: 43-17-23-40, +7 // ('12: 82-19-21-40, -4)

Saku Koivu: 41-16-17-33, +5 // ('12: 82-18-20-38, Even)

  • Rookie Evgeny Kuznetsov has been lights out for the Red Wings, putting up 20 points in the first 43 games. It would appear that Kuznetsov will finish as the runner-up for the Calder Trophy as the NHL's Top Rookie behind the brilliant Markus Granlund (46 points). The next closest is 2012 1st overall pick Nail Yakupov with 13 points.

  • It's only been a 7-game viewing so far, but former 1st round pick Brendan Smith appears to be a lock for the Red Wings defence core and powerplay next season as the rookie's development has been incredible. Smith registered no points and a -5 rating in a 9-game stint in 2012, but has bounced back with 5 points in 7 games with the Red Wings this season. Smith has been even more impressive in the AHL with 32 points in 40 games, and the Grand Rapids Griffins will likely plead their case to get their #1 defenceman back in time for the AHL Calder Cup.

The Bad

  • Defenceman Jonathan Ericsson has only 2 points in 31 games this season. While he's not exactly billed as an offensive defenceman, the Red Wings expect much more from the mobile blueliner as his time with the organization may be coming to a close with the emergence of Jakub Kindl and Brendan Smith. Chris Tanev has also paid his dues in the AHL and many have penned the RIT-product as the Red Wing's #7 defenceman in 2014.

The Ugly

  • Goalie Cory Schneider just has not been his stellar real-life counterpart. In 17 starts, Schneider has a 7-8-2 record with a 3.01 GAA and 0.908 SV%. To make matters worse, most of Schneider's starts have been in the 2nd half of back-to-back games and against teams with a near 0.500 record. The Red Wings must make a franchise-altering decision this season as management needs to decide who their 'goalie of the future' will be.

  • It's not the best part of the job, but the penalty killers must start getting into shooting lanes and making good on their clearing attempts. The Wings' PK is absolutely abysmal at 75% (Letting in 4 goals in 4 attempts by the Toronto Maple Leafs doesn't help).

Rumour Round-up

  • Sources say the Red Wings have been in serious discussions with an undisclosed team about acquiring a top-6 centre and that negotiations have gone on for over a week. Calls made to the Wings' office were not returned regarding this matter.

Extremely pleased to bring Tomas and Anton on board. Tomas and Travis should provide a great duo down the middle and Anton should be a decent defenceman at AHL level for the time being.

EDIT: We're also going to bring up young defender Jonathan Merrill. His AHL pace has been great and we're hoping he can make a transition to NHL level. We won't expect to put up PPG like he's been doing but a solid 10-15 points in this next half of the season would be great in our opinion.

The Edmonton Oilers are thrilled to aquire Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau to make a run in the playoffs. We are going to lean heavily on the two veterans and will have two very good scoring lines. As much as it was difficult to move Eberle, it was a stragic decision based on the emergence of other young stars like Jaden Schwartz. We hope this puts us on the map for free agents to come to and a place to re-sign our own players.

A press conference will be held tonight concerning the recent Oiler transactions.
