ABNuck
I was thinking about the mind-boggling possibility that the Coyotes (formerly the Jets) could move to Quebec City (now the Avs) and wondered if any of our younger fans might be curious about where all the NHL teams started their NHL life and where they are now, so I made the chart below. NOTE: this is for NHL teams, as they exist now, and where they came from as their CURRENT state, not for defunct teams that just quit the NHL (ie/ Maroons, Arenas, Americans etc.etc.), so please don't comment that the Senators actually joined the NHL way back when grandpa was born...that quite simply isn't the current team, with no association what-so-ever with that team. Also, the year is when they JOINED the NHL, not when the team was founded (ie/ Canucks are an older franchise but JOINED the NHL in 1970). So here ya go young 'uns: ANAHEIM DUCKS (1993) Joined NHL as Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Name changed to Anaheim Ducks in 2006. BOSTON BRUINS (1924) BUFFALO SABRES (1970) CALGARY FLAMES (1972) Joined NHL as Atlanta Flames. Moved to Calgary in 1980. CAROLINA HURRICANES (1979) Joined NHL as Hartford Whalers (from WHA). Moved to Raleigh in 1997. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS (1926) COLORADO AVALANCHE (1979) Joined NHL as Quebec Nordiques (from WHA). Moved to Denver in 1995. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS (2000) DALLAS STARS (1967) Joined NHL as Minnesota North Stars. Merged with Cleveland Barons (formerly California Seals) in 1978. Moved to Dallas in 1993. DETROIT RED WINGS (1926) EDMONTON OILERS (1979) Joined NHL from WHA. FLORIDA PANTHERS (1993) LOS ANGELES KINGS (1967) MINNESOTA WILD (2000) MONTREAL CANADIANS (1917) NASHVILLE PREDATORS (1998) NEW JERSEY DEVILS (1974) Joined NHL as Kansas City Scouts. Moved to Denver (as Colorado Rockies) in 1976. Moved to New Jersey (as Devils) in 1982. NEW YORK ISLANDERS (1972) NEW YORK RANGERS (1926) OTTAWA SENATORS (1992) PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (1967) PHOENIX COYOTES (1979) Joined NHL as Winnipeg Jets (from WHA). Moved to Phoenix in 1996. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS (1967) ST.LOUIS BLUES (1967) SAN JOSE SHARKS (1991) TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (1992) TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (1917) VANCOUVER CANUCKS (1970) WASHINGTON CAPITALS (1974) WINNIPEG JETS (1999) Joined NHL as Atlanta Thrashers in 1999.
