The absolute burn it to the ground rebuild is just something that is simpler for fans to understand. In reality the Flames have made several moves from last off-season to get younger and to transform to smaller faster team instead of the big hitting grinding team.

Change is afoot but it will just take time.

12M comes off the books this offseason. We will have a lot of wiggle room to work with bringing in free agents, trades...etc.

Thing is, we have A LOT of bad contracts on the team right now. Anyone still remember Stajan is on the team? :picard:

Main thing this off-season though, BRINGING IN A FACEOFF SPECIALIST

Calgary hasn't looked like a bubble team though. Sure, they made the playoffs in recent memory, but that was 08/09. They haven't made it out of the first round since 03/04. I could see if they looked like a solid team not getting luck, or a young team already on the rebuild and getting better, but moving Bourque for Cammy isn't the game changer that will get it done.

Perhaps it's closer to what shift-4 says, they'll have to get rid of the contracts that are weighing them down first but if they just let those expire they get nothing in return.

Imagine if they dealt Kipper to Tampa for young prospects. How about Iggy to Detroit? Those are players teams will take. Calgary would try and keep Cammy, Tanguay and Giordano maybe - and J-Bo's contract isn't going anywhere as much as they'd like it to - but then the rest of the contracts are manageable and you can build a value team while you stockpile prospects and work them into the lineup.

I think for them to try and make a playoff run is the wrong choice. Move the two oldest players on your team for assets at the deadline (hopefully Jokinen too as he's a UFA) and look to the future with guys like Backlund, Baertschi, Brodie and Irving being promising talents that can still play alongside the remaining stars they'd have.

I don't say they should give up just yet. Last year they were just 3 points out of a playoff spot. This year they are also 3 points out of a spot. I wouldn't rebuild a team that close to the playoffs.

It's sad watching the Flames these days. Although they were a rival of the Canucks and vastly superior in the 80's, the Flames have had to rely on puck luck and low percentage plays to win big games, and to their credit they have overachieved in this.

One good reason to blow it up: NO SCORING. They try to get the first goal and they sit on the lead and attempt to win 1-0. I watched the San Jose game last night. They literally have no idea how to set up a scoring play. They skate in and start taking blind shots at Niemi, hoping he lets in a softie. Even the one goal they had was from their D, and arguably their best forward in that game was Jones, a plug they got a couple weeks ago to fill a hole.

"Soft rebuild" my ass. How many times have the Flames tried to bring back the past by re-acquiring Joker and Tangs and Squid? I have no doubt that Miikka Kiprusoff is a solid goalie, but is he really worth more right now than the youth and picks trading him could provide? Whenever the possibility of trading Iggy comes up in forums, Flames fans talk about how untradable he is as a franchise guy....do they not remember the hall of famers the Flames have given up in decades past?

I wouldn't be surprised if Calgary tries to re-acquire Commodore and Lombardi and Toni Lydman, hell bring all the Flames back from the 'good ol' days' of losing in round 1 every year. What's Ville Nieminen up to? Get that bastard on the phone Feaster!!

Delusional.

Imagine if the Canucks asked Nazzy to come out of retirement, traded for Morrison and Bert and then got Ohlund and Jovo back. We call up the CHL and see if goalie coach Clouts can strap em on again for some nostalgia. At least that team lost in the 2nd round. It would be a hilarious joke.

The Flames are doing it for real.
