Why Is Av Such A Great Coach?

I cannot understand why people love coach AV so much. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the guy on a personal level. But I find myself disagreeing with alot of his coaching decisions. Heres a few:

- Why was Oreo playing on the first line with the Sedins in the finals? I understand they wanted someone with size but Oreo? Fine you want to try that for a shift or 2 but they played together often in the finals.

- AV chose to dress Glass/Bolduc/Oreo over Shirikov/Hodgson/Tamballini in the finals. The Canucks scored 8 goals in 7 games in the finals. And Glass/Oreo/Bolduc brought no physical play whatsoever and couldn't score.

- AV never seems to adjust. He himself admits his stubborn. Ray Ferrero on 1040 even said AV is the type of coach who makes a game plan and sticks to it no matter what.

- Does AV realize you can't bank time outs? The guy refuses to call time outs!

- He plays favorites. Rome over Ballard is an example.

I can go on and on and on and on...I just don't see why his considered a great coach! I know people will look at his record and the teams record but look at this team, a freakin baboon can coach this team to a northwest division banner. We need a coach who puts players in positions to succeed not fail and I just don't see our coach do that enough. Sedins have been struggling for a while now yet he insists in keeping burrows/sedins together. Why not try Higgins or Booth or Kassian with the twins? He plays Rome way to much. When the top 6 is out there, I don't want Rome out there...Rome should be sheltered to play the opposing teams 3rd/4th line and should be playing with the Nucks 3rd and 4th line players.

There is so much more that I scratch my head over. Special teams is another problem. PP has been invisible for 2 months now and now they are trying different combos on the 1st unit?

I just don't get what makes this guy a great coach. He also has no problem throwing guys under the bus. You never see him talking to his players on the bench. His the only coach I never see talking to his players. a month back Daniel Sedin was asked about coach AV and how close they were and Daniel said AV doesn't bother them and they don't bother him, they only talk when they have to. He went onto say they aren't friends and he likes it that way.

Anyways, I know some people will agree and some won't but I just can't figure out why AV is considered a great coach.

Uhh because he wins a ton of games... If his job really was as easy as you say it is, then they wouldn't even need a coach. They could just coach themselves. Go play a team sport and then maybe you'll realize how important good coaching is, and how teams with great players but crappy coaches never usually get anywhere.

To be fair, outside of Neilson, Pat Quinn, and Marc Crawford, we don't exactly have a a stunning list of coaches in our history.

It's a sort of chicken and egg thing. Is the team good because of AV? Or is AV an average coach with a great team?

I think the only way it would be settled is if say AV and Barry Trotz swapped clubs and see what happens.

AV does many frustrating things, and I don't have faith he will lead us to the promised land. But I'm leaving that to Gillis. Complaining anymore doesn't do anything.

I will say this. No matter what happens, if AV wins a cup with us, I will go on record saying he's the greatest coach in our history.

But only at that point.

I question AV a lot and at times thinks he makes the completely wrong decisions but his record speaks for itself. Is the teams record good despite him or because of him? I don't know, but if he were such a bad coach I don't think we'd be where we have been for the past few years, having said all that I really despise and question many of his decisions.

There is some things he does that are a head-scratcher, but we have to keep in mind there are many many options that are much worse then av. I dont think he is a great coach yet, but i do consider him one of the better coaches in the nhl.

I wish he would show more urgency at times, im finally seeing some urgency out of him and demanding more of his players. Last year at times i thought he was to laid back when there was glaring weaknesses. This year it seems like he is finally feeling the pressure. So more urgency from him is my biggest complaint, he seems to laid back at times, but that does seem to be changing finally.

I think this year we might see av take a step up in coaching, i dont think he will stand around like he did last year when we play bad. I think he realizes there are problems from last year still not addressed. I hope we continue to see a more aggressive av, on and off the bench. Sometimes when ref's are also making bs calls i wish he would show a bit more passion like other coaches and voice his opinion.

People who say because hes got a good team, anyone can coach a good team.

If you knew anything about hockey. Its harder to coach a group with skill. Trying to get everyone on the same page, keep them motivated. Hello look at the Washington Capitals. Tonnes of skill , nothing

Look at the Blues for example. They havent changed in player personalle, that much since the start of the year, they switch coaches...and boom..they are at the top of the leauge. If coaching was sooooo easy. They wouldnt have coaches.

Give your head a shake. AV is a damn good coach. I love his interviews too, I always get a kick out of what he has to say
