Hits Per Game

I noticed last night that after the second period hits were 11 - 3 in favor of Minnesota. I' m hoping there is a stats dude out there who can look at the hits we have compared to our opponents over this stretch. Based on what I saw and this stat it is very obvious "looking" although when stats are checked this theory may prove wrong, that we are not hitting and playing a safe game.

The reason this struck a chord was because of the last minute and a half when we started throwing bodies around. I was thinking holy crap. Remember opening game how many hits we came out throwing last year in the playoffs, it was awesome.

I do believe we are built to hit and finesse. You watch. I am so glad we are not fighting for a playoff spot because we would have to be crashing and banging now, getting beat up. The Chicago game will be a tell tale sign, if we come out hitting and playing hard, I bet we win. Chicago will be the best indicator because we hate them. If we don't come out hitting we may fluke out with a finesse win, but if we hit more we win.

So if anyone out there can compile opponents hits vs ours I'd love to see if there is any substance to my theory.

We're 14th overall in "home" hits in the league (865).

We're 24th in the league for "road" hits (712).

Overall, we're19th with a total of 1577 hits.

Top 3: Rangers (2139); Kings (2006); Stars (1977)

Chicago is dead last, with 1,340

Boston is 22, with 1526 (I guess they don't count those dirty hits)

Personally, I like it when we play a fast moving, hard hitting game. Unfortunately, when you blow it wide open like that it does leave you more vulnerable to injuries. I believe they're avoiding that at the moment and just doing what they can to enter the playoffs unscathed and fully loaded. But, with that, you risk developing bad/lazy habits.

Bring on the post season already....enough of this powder puff stuff.

Minnesota's statistician is a notorious homer with hits.

2010-11 Hit Leaders

1 - Cal Clutterbuck MIN R - 76 GP, 336 hits

2 - Tuomo Ruutu CAR C 82 GP, 309 hits

3 - Dustin Brown LAK R 82 GP, 300 hits

Really? Clutterbuck led the league in hits, with 27 more (8.7%) more than the next guy, despite not playing 6 games?

2009-10 Hit Leaders

1 - Cal Clutterbuck MIN R - 74 GP, 318 hits

2 - Dustin Brown LAK R - 82 GP, 287 hits

3 - Ryan Callahan NYR R - 77 GP, 285 hits

Same deal, only this time he played 8 games less...

I have noticed that our team has not been hitting much in this small funk that we are in, my teory on this is that the team wants to go into the playoffs 100% healthy. I know that this is going to get a immature response from some of the readers here but, I think that the team is smart for that because it shows that they are adaptable. Meaning that going into the playoffs last year they were battered and bruised and they stayed that way until the end. This year they have taken a new approach, one which I am not particularly fond of, but I think we are all as Canucks Fans about to be shocked at the pure domination the nucks are going to unleash in this years playoffs, A health, determined, motivated, and angry Canucks team = Stanley cup

It seems to me we played a certain way last year (we had Torres and Glass) and we probably felt that playing that way was fine coming into the playoffs. We had no real recent experience of a long run.

Then as we started to advance and meet some pretty big hitters we probably suffered "hit exhaustion"

Now with last year's experience and with our realising that in fact nothing else now matters apart from winning the SC we have consciously or sub consciously decided to coast and play a minimal hitting game.

I don't think for a moment the game we are playing now is how we will play in the playoffs.

Actually going into the playoffs last year we were 100% healthy except for Manny and I think Edler who came back fresh from back surgery.

I just think that the Canucks are unmotivated. We lose motivation incrementally after beating Boston then stopping Detroit's home winning streak. Since then we have been playing against mostly desperate bubble teams. Unless Colorado gives us a challenge, we'll go through the motions until the playoffs begin.

They are trying to stay healthy... After last year playoff run they were decimated, from men down due to injury, as well as one suspension... You have not seen anything yet. A lot of the players have said of late..."We have learned a lot from last year"...

This is like preparing for war...only the healthy and smart survive the battle. So get ready for the "Big Show" to start somewhere around... APRIL 11th...Go Canucks Go..."CBS CARES"
