Keenan: Panthers Were Offered Thornton For Luongo In '05/06

Recommended Posts

Yeah, apparently the owners didn't want to pay Luongo $35 million. They offered 25 million and then it ended up offering lu $33 mill and Lu turned it down. That's when the owners said they wanted Luongo traded.

Offer from Boston for Joe Thornton, but florida owners did not want to take on his contract.

in retrospect it's kind of surprising that they would turn down a 100+ point scorer... salaries aside he could've done so much for their team, giving Olli Jokinen a legit setup man which would also allow them to swap another one of their centers for a scoring winger

then again the team had a glut of NHL centers (Olli, Stumpel, Weiss, Horton were top 4 in team scoring, plus they had Gratton and Nieuwendyk) but not many quality scoring wingers (Gelinas, Roberts, Peltonen, Kolnik, hopefuls in Olesz, Booth, Campbell) so Bert makes sense (he was point-per-game in his 7 games there)

Love how people here think that they know it all, in hindsight of course.

I can understand why Florida didn't want Thornton - because he had been a no-show for playoffs (not anymore now). At his price, it might have been steep. It is easier to find a player like Thornton than it is to find a legit power forward in Bertuzzi that clearly needed a change in scenery.

Luongo was asking for too much money and they put two and two together.

The deal actually makes sense back then. It was the unfortunate turn of events that happened which made the trade look far worse than it did.

LOL, what's even dumber than trading Luongo fro Bertuzzi + Auld. Admitting you could of had Thorton.

Why would Sportsnets even invited Keenan to their show. I guess TSN gets all the good guys and Sportsnets just pick up the leftover even if they have no credibility.

At the time it looked like Auld might be a starting goaltender some day and Florida thought Bertuzzi would get a point-per-game for them, which he did until he got injured 7 games into the regular season and never played again for the Panthers. They also got a solid D-man in Bryan Allen

It was still a terrible trade for Florida, though, and I think Nonis knew that when he made it.

I think Luongo has shown he can bring more to a team in terms of getting results. Thornton is very good however and any team offered him would be foolish not to look into it. Thornton is like many very good players in the NHL, until he gets a Stanley Cup if at all he wont be given as much credit for what he does on the ice as perhaps he should.
