The Relationship Between Fans And Goalies Put Into Perspective

 Fan of 25 years? Yet you do not know Vancouver is called the "goalie graveyard"? It's for a reason. Every goalie takes tremendous critiscm, the most pressure in the league, and when something bad happens, it's ALWAYS the goalies fault. Fleury is melting down this playoffs...Are they panicking saying he needs to be traded? No, because they have actual fans who can have rational thought. And it's funny how an unproven backup with a huge number of 1 playoff win is a "better option".

Part of it is also the $ signs,

Fans expect someone who is paid $10, 000, 000 not to make mistakes or at least make very few and be able to handle the pressure put onto him by the fans who indirectly pay his contracr

, but you cant blame Luongo for the contract, did you expect him to decline it?

Luongo is playing the race card. He does the Catholic cross before every game, he is Italian, and French form Quebec, three of the most proud and divisive cultures on Earth. He has a 12 year contract from Italian (Canadian) owners, and you want to know why people walk on eggshells for him? Theres your answer.

You tell me Lu is not pouting over at the bench. Every time the camera pans over there he looks like he is about to cry. His face and body language tell it all "I deserve better then this" "I am a frikken star" I don't hate the man nor do I think he is the reason we are in the position we are in right now, but he certainly does not have that "comon guys I will carry you on my back" attitude that this team is in need of right now. His demeanor is depressing and defensive and right now this team needs the opposite

Dy-nam-ic: Characterized by continuous change, activity, or progress

Ya the Sedins don't fit that what so ever. Are you sure you knew the definition? :picard:

You've made it clear you hate Luongo and that you're argueing just for the sake of argueing as you're just regergitating the same opinion over and over, come to me with some facts that support your hate for Luongo and we'll continue.

Also your remarks about T.T. are not fact but again just your opinion, anyone who has seen T.T.'s carreer since he was drafted would know that he is FAR from elite. 3 good years does not make you elite.

He can't take the pressure?

This season he has taken the pressure and negativity like a champ.

But now it seems like everytime some thing happens it starts to get more and more personal everytime.

That joke about him committing suicide that starting going around after the finals was too much, I'm fine with critizing him on his play but it's becoming more and more relentless and personal everytime.

While I have only been a member of CDC for about a week, I have been following the message board and countless amount of threads for over 3 years. I began taking interest in the CDC boards during the 08/09 season, and substantially more interest after the 09 playoffs, after we got eliminated by the Blackhawks following Luongo's first "meltdown". Since then up until now, I have read a number of threads and messages from the CDC community where people often say that pressure and intolerant behaviour from the fans has been hard on the team, particularly on Luongo and consequently effecting his play. And now that Cory Schneider's playing as great as a goalie can play, and odds rising in his favour to take the starting goaltending position on our team next year, the relationship between fans and goaltenders is being brought up again, and many fans are blaming themselves and other fans of the Canucks for "shattering" Luongo's confidence, and suggesting that the same will happen to Schneider if he fails to meet expectations. But my question, and inquiry, is, do the fans really have that much to do in changing the way a proffesional athlete plays the game?

Since the peak of Naslund's career in 02/03, there has not been a player in the Canucks organization who has had a bigger fanbase than Luongo. But starting from the 09 playoffs, it is undeniable that Luongo has been inconsistent in the playoffs; some games he plays lights out, other games it looks like he's a emergency call up from the ECHL. His inconsistent play subsequently lead a lot of fans to develop a negative attitude towards him, however, many more fans had a favourable opinion towards him than negative. Even following last years loss to Boston, while most hockey 'experts' and fans from other markets pin pointed Luongo's weak play in the Chicago and Boston series, majority of people still supported Lou in Vancouver. So where does this question of his shattered confidence because of fans come into play?

There is no doubt that Vancouver is a hockey crazed city. With the Canucks being the only major league franchise in the city, it's a given that fans are very passionate about the team. So obviously, after Luongo put up questionable performces for three straight playoffs, it's a given that people will begin to dislike him and make negative remarks. But being a professional athlete making upwards of 5 million dollars a year, should the remarks of minority of fans be bugging him? It's ignorant to say Luongo is the only goalie in the NHL who faces pressure. Tim Thomas has got it from the fans on numerous occasions, so has Carey Price, so has Marc Andre Fleury and the list goes on. It's a part of hockey, fans get angry, it happens. So why are we Canucks fans so ready to blame ourselves for "shattering" Luongo's confidence (when we don't even know if his confidence is shattered)? Isn't it our right to question a goalie's play? Is it wrong to boo him after a bad performance? If these things can get to an athlete, then I question the ability of the athlete more than anything else.

So what do you guys think, are we as fans really that bad? Do we really shatter the confidence of players to the point where they can't play well anymore? Is this going to happen to Schneider, if he becomes a starter, too? Or is this all just an overreaction or a overplayed excuse? I want to know your guys' opinions because this really baffles me.

Ok you tell me then, name 3 goalies that were "run out of town" like lou and Dan. I didn't say fans have not been critical of the goaltending but fans are critical of all players goalies as well.

Only two goalies have faced the hate that Lou is now. That my friend is why he is done in Vancouver. You need to understand the city never has and never will turn on goalies for one bad games it takes seasons of inconsistent play.

Next time read the post before you respond.

I think booing your team is more ok than pointing all blame against ONE player. Especially on your goalie. Cheering when your goalie gets pulled after a tough game are so stupid that i can't even find words for it. I really don't see how that will make him better? That's the wrong way to question someones poor play.

I have never booed one of our players (at a game, the TV is another thing) but I think you may be missing the point of why people are doing it to Lou. I don't think they are trying to motivate him but sent a message to management about how they feel. That's why it's best if he moves on there is no longer love for him here and it will increase if he pushes Cory out of town, the booing that is.

Really? So booing your goalie in a Stanley Cup final after a bad game in Boston is just to send a message to the management? Obviously that's probably not what Lu thought when that stupid reporter told him. After all he was the reason why this team won 3 games in that series. The rest of the games he might not have been on top of his game, but neither was this team.

And even though that's why fans are booing him, it's still wrong. Fans booing you won't make you better.

I really don't think that the majority of the people who are booing him do it because they want a change. Mainly because of poor play.

I think the fact that it is getting progressively more shows that it is people calling for change, but you may be right. If its right or wrong is another question.

We should ask it in a poll people who boo lou is it for change or just because of the poor play.

If Gillis would trade Schneider instead then? Then we are "stuck" with this guy that doesn't have confidence.

We have no idea how consistent Schneider will be if he play 60-+70 games and then comes into the playoffs. I love both Schneider and Luongo. But i really think Luongo takes criticism he doesn't even deserve.
