[Proposal] Vancouver - New York Islanders

Recommended Posts

Not sure I'd be totally committed to this deal, considering the lack of available puck moving defensemen, but I figure I'd float this idea past the rest of you.

Keith Ballard

Mason Raymond

To Vancouver:

Josh Bailey

Why the Islanders do this:

Well, out of 8 defensemen on their roster 4 are UFA's this year, with their best defenseman (Streit) a UFA in 2013. While they do have some impressive upcoming defensemen on the team and in the system, Ballard would provide a regular top 4 for them for the duration of his contract.

Bailey has been a bit of a bust in New York. Not full fledged, but has not lived up to his potential. He posted 32 points last year in his 4th NHL season. Raymond essentially fills Bailey's spot on the roster.

Why Vancouver does this:

We clear cap space, and get bigger and younger upfront. Bailey plays both Centre and Wing, so he gives us flexibility. He also averaged 1:34 per game on the PK. I think he would fit in on the 3rd line with Higgens and Hansen as a 3rd line centre. As well, I think he could correct his career path and develop into a top 6 forward under the Canucks watch.

The part I'm not sold on is available defensemen. It's not like we have a huge influx of defensemen. If we would move Ballard, we would have to be all in to grab a Suter, Carle, or Wideman, otherwise it's a lateral move at best.
