Gms Get Together To Fix The Nhl

Recommended Posts

We all watched in horror this past season as our Dynamic Duo Sedin’s were clipped by a brutally bad hit to Dan the man. The ensuing concussion most certainly affected our first round exit. A healthy Dan who never missed a game would have changed game 1 and the rest of the series. Keith who perpetrated the offense was given a 5 game suspension. But do you think that will stop Keith from doing it again? Will it really stop the next goon from doing it to some other elite? Keith told Henrik he was going after Dan and he did.

What I want is something that really causes players to think about the consequences of a hit they know could take a player out. Something that goons can think about when they see punishment of an offence they could commit. I propose the GM’s back a very simple rule addition. If a player is involved in a play where a player is injured and that play is penalized on the ice or later results in a suspension, then the offending player shall sit out for as long as it takes the injured player to return to the NHL.

There would most likely also need to be the ability to appeal to a third party doctor to validate if the injured player is able to return to play so as to avoid gaming by the GM and Head coach of the injured players team. Simple enough to set up.

Depending on how you define return to the NHL things get interesting. Imagine if Van did not make the playoffs with Dan out due to the hit from Keith. Then Keith cannot play until the 2013 season starts but certainly not until Dan was cleared for play. Keith would have been out for the playoffs.

You could also add a 25% extra number of games missed to the offending player so that games missed is not just even with the injured player.

Such a rule change would have a dramatic effect on the goons. Shanahan is kind of trying to do this but not to the same degree. Dan missed way more games than 5 and it ended our teams efforts for the year. Think over the last 2 years what this rule change would have done.

this has been talked about for the past two years, it doesn't work because if fringe or 4th liner aka Hordichuk etc takes out a star player aka Daniel, they are happy with that because if he knocks him down for 2 days then 2 day suspension, if he's gone for the rest of the year then Hordichuk's club really doesn't care.

All in all, the fact the player is injured or not injured should be out of the equation, as it is the play itself or the intent to injure that should be suspended.

Suspension's imo should be raised in degree of harshness but that has to be negotiated in the CBA. (not going to happen)

also why is this a proposal? it's obviously should be in the General Hockey Discussion or Canucks Talk.

The flaw in your way of thinking is that even though the organization might not care that there fringe fourth liner is out long term, that player may well care since suspensions come with LOST PAY every game they miss. I dont care who you are if your pocketbook is affected long term your going to think twice

This rule change would do nothing to alter the discretion of Shanahan, the refs or the league. And it does not apply to Fringe or Elite players. It applies to all.

If you get a repeat offender then the league should amplify the suspension.

The beauty of this is that it removes the club from encouraging a player to head hunt. In the end of the day, the player loses his livelihood. Even the slowest goon can figure out the equation: when I injure someone I do not get paid.

This would provide a very simple feedback loop. It would be effective at causing a player to look at what happened in another case and apply it. The goal is to modify behaviour so the incident does not occur in the first place.

There really would be no gaming the system. GM of the team being affected would request the independent evaluation. When cleared the suspended player can return.

I mentioned the summer because it is interesting and you could handle it all sorts of ways. Keith was not appropriately punished. It took all of AV’s strength in the interview (after game 2 I believe against LA) to not delve further into his disgust over the punishment.

The “extra” time off simply modifies the punishment. It would be most effective in the 1 to 5 game missed events where the offending person would get at least one extra game. Could be anything from +0% to +100% or more.

I think Moore pays the price. Sends a very strong message that causes all the players on the edge to seriously consider when they are zeroing in on their target. That is the whole point.

As for Torres, he got what was coming to him. After what he did in our uniform last year to Seabrook I was happy to see him traded. He now leaves a big hole in the Coyotes lineup. Shanahan gave him 25 games to absolutely guarantee that if the Coyotes went all the way he could not play.
