Edler For Gustafsson And Jvr

Recommended Posts

I think we should try to deal Edler before he goes into his contract year. His value is really high and Philly needs a good offensive defenseman that can replace Pronger. While we get two pieces to fill a bunch of holes. Assuming we trade Luongo for Gunnersson + pick/prospect, we will get younger and have more depth. Gunnersson and Gustafsson are both good players ready to break out. We need to do a Philly style re-tool and get more depth throughout our lineup. Erik Gustafsson is a +3 and has been good these playoffs.

To Philly

Edler

pick

Raymond

To Van

JVR

Gustafsson

To Toronto

Luongo

To Vancouver

Gunnersson

Colborne

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows

JVR-Kesler-Booth

Higgins-Colborne-Hansen

Lappiere-Malhotra-Bitz

Bieksa-Hamhuis

Gunnersson-Gustafsson

Ballard-Tanev

Schneider

Lack/UFA

If somehow we can dump Ballard and sign Stuart, that will make our defense better. I think Gunnersson has been good defensively and he has good offensive potentials along with Gustafsson. This would also open up the possibility of getting Weber with the cap space.

Also, this trade add size and skill to the forward corps with additions of Colborne and JVR. Makes our defense more soft but if we dump Ballard for Stuart, we would be fine. The defense being offensive would fit the system that we play. Reason why we can't get slow footed, big defensemen, since our system doesn't complement them.

I don't know why everyone has given up on Edler, and Philly is one of the last teams I want us trading with. Edler has way more upside than Gustafsson and Philly is already one of the most dangerous teams in the league without JVR, this would probably make them even better.

When Edler gets into his contract year and demands 6-7 million, along with having Pronger's cap hit, I just doubt they will be able to sign all the youngsters. What if they give us JVR, Wellwood and Gustafsson?? Would you turn that deal down? Trust me, JVR is exactly what the Canucks need and Gustafsson could probably fill the void Edler left. Or we could somehow sign a Stuart, Wideman or maybe Suter (wishful thinking).

While I like JVR, he hasn't even had a 40+point season yet. He's definitely got upside, but he's more of a goal scorer, so I'm not sure I'd want to add another shooter to Kesler's line. You also seem to be going the long way around to get defensive help.

You could move Luongo and Edler for Schenn, Gunnarson and Toronto's 1st* if you wanted to try and address it in one deal. We could then draft someone like Forsberg (another shooter though) or one of the centers available.

If you feel Toronto wouldn't go for that much, maybe do Luongo and Edler for Schenn, Kulemin and 1st*. We get a larger player in Kulemin for the wing, and we could then draft Reinhart or one of the other top D-men available around #5.

*Both are options, but I'd think we'd want more for both Luongo and Edler. I don't know if Burke would part with another prospect, like Carter Ashton, but it could be worth a try and a better return would easily make it worthwhile.

Well, Philly signed Bryz to a 6.5 mill contract. You don't think they will sign Edler for at least 6 million? That is why I am saying that we should trade him before his contract year. I just don't see Edler as part of this team's core moving forward. The core of this team is Sedins+Kesler+Schneider+Hamhuis. Bieksa and Burrows are also part of the core but are complimentary players. Edler seems like a good regular season player but I have never seen him play great in the playoffs (minus the Kings series couple of years ago)

Just for the record Bryz is making 5.6 million not 6.5 million.

But JVR would be a strong pick up. For those looking at his numbers keep in mind he had some repeating lingering injury issues this season (concussion, hip, foot) so the only real concern with him is health because he needs his athletic ability to dominate.

JVR's ability though is very rare to find though. Listed as big as 6'3 and 211 pounds on some sites he has a body similar to Zack Kassian whose listed as 6'3 and 214 pounds. But JVR's athletic ability is incredibly well rounded, for his size he still has pull away breakaway speed but the strength to push defenders out of his way repeatedly and adding a complimentary slap shot that has been clocked as 102 mph as well as surprising dekes for a man of his size. He has a dangerous set of weapons and I truly think he is going to be a big player.

Edler would be a bit loss himself but JVR wouldn't let down IMO. Though I admit I am unsure of how Raymond would fit on the Flyers. For his likely cap hit they would get just as much production out of guys like Talbot, Wellwood, Read, etc.
