[Discussion] Ovechkin

Recommended Posts

Clearly Ovechkin is not fitting under Dale Hunter. Most often teams will fire the coach rather than trade the superstar but with Ovie's declining numbers over the years, he has fallen out of favour in Washington.

I could legitimately see Washington trading the big contract of Ovechkin and many teams interested in the gamble on a guy who has potential to be the best player in the game.

I think every team would at least inquire but with his NTC, he wouldn't accept a Nash + Johansen deal to Columbus.

So I have two questions.

First, do you also think it's legitimate that he could be traded?

Secondly, would you be interested in getting him on the Canucks and what would you trade for him?

Personally, I think an offensive minded coach in a new city could renew his passion. Kesler seems like a Dale Hunter type of guy and would probably be the core of the package going the other way.

Kesler + Bieksa + 1st for Ovechkin + Jeff Schultz

Then trade Booth for a centerman (and with getting rid of Lou's contract and Ballards there will be lots of cap space)

My bet is that Dale Hunter stays.

Ovechkin will not be traded and will continue to be a 30 goal scorer in Washington. When the Caps need a goal Ovi will get ample ice time.

If I were an NHL general manager I would not go after Ovechkin because he is the highest paid player in the entire NHL. For those of you who are unaware his cap hit is over 9 million dollars. More than Kesler and Edler or a Sedin and Burrows or about as much as Edler, Burrows, Hansen, Higgins and Lapierre combined.

That wont even get you close to Ovechkin who happens to be the face and future of that franchise. If you happen to be trading for him you will have to trade someone who can be just as big a draw as Ovechkin and there are very few players can be that.

Think my proposal for the rights to Suter and Weber, but throw in Luongo and Raymond

To Washington: Roberto Luongo, Mason Raymond, Anton Rodin, Kevin Bieksa, Keith Ballard, Manny Malhotra, Sammy Pahlsson, Kevin Connauton, and 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 2nd rounders

To Vancouver: Alex Ovechkin + John Erskine

Sign Wideman and Suter

Is OV going to be traded? No

Would I love to have on the Canucks? Yes.

Ovechkin is a superstart who fills the seats. He's not going anywhere. He's been averaging 19+ mins per game in the playoffs. He only got 13+ mins in his last game and everyone made a big deal of it instead of talking about OV's game winning goal.

OV has been hitting like a machine in the playoffs. Not easy to replace a guy who scores and lays punishing hits.
