Vancouver Province blog rips on Tambellini re-signing (funny but true)

Pretty funny but true. I know there are Oiler fans here but no one here can justify Tambo being a good GM. All the guy has done is make the obvious picks and see his team suck. You do not have to be a good general manager to do that. In fact it is more or less the cowardly way out. You toy with the fan base by never getting better and waste there money while not making decisions to actually enhance the team. Rather, you wait for great players to fall on your lap.

Terrible blog. Edmonton could end up being a really scary team for a long time. Tambellini made the best moves possible, when you acquire a top prospect, it will take a while for them to hit their prime, Tambi is simply allowing the team to continue to suck until his young guys are old enough, then he can make moves to improve the team.

There would have been no sense in grabbing a Taylor Hall and then starting to build around him, that is the lame duck way to rebuild. He could have grabbed a goalie, some defense, and started to push for a playoff spot, but by the time Hall is in his prime those acquisitions would likely be gone. Instead he takes the route that allows him to pick up Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov, might as well grab those guys while you wait for Hall, MPS, Eberle, et al to develop.

If Tambi had made "the right moves" according to the blog, they would be the new Calgary Flames, competing for a playoff spot with little hope for the future. Sure they would have a couple good young players, but would likely have given at least one up for a goaltender or top dman, just to compete for a playoff spot.

Tambi decided to avoid the middle ground altogether, continue to add top young players until they start to grow up, then I imagine he will shift to building his team properly (could be as early as next season).

As food for thought, imagine if Pittsburgh had mortgaged the future immediately after drafting Malkin, forgoing the chance to get Staal/Crosby later on.

Ditto for Chicago, after drafting Keith, Seabrook and then getting a very high pick and selecting the Cam Barker/Dave Bolland, many would argue the time to build the team had come, time to compete for a playoff spot and build around those players. How do you think it would have gone for them to up their compete level and miss out on Toews and Kane?

It seems the teams that rebuild the best are teams that tank for several years, not all of these teams turn out to be the Blue Jackets, some end up winning cups and being a force to be reckoned with for a long time.

Exactly what is Tambellini supposed to do? Trade away all his picks/prospects a la Burke or Glen Sather circa early 2000s?

Tambellini is being patient. He could be satisfied with icing a mediocre team that might make the playoffs once in a while (Leafs), or he could wait for his brilliant set of players to develop into a Stanley Cup Contender. At which point, he then has the assets to trade with other teams to get that 'missing piece' if he believes he needs something else going into the playoffs.

I keep hearing this "Edmonton will be scary good in a couple years", been hearing this the last 2-3 years, and havent seen anything really, besides a few individual performances from guys like Eberle and Nugent Hopkins. IMO they wont be as good as people think, but will be a playoff team. I think some of their young stars will want raises and will go elsewhere. The Oilers are going nowhere if they don't address their goaltending, and also their defence. Those are areas they really need help with.
