Try to Complete our Roster just With UFAs/RFAs

Recommended Posts

Lots of trade proposals out there, but of course lots of those never materialize in real life.

Would like to see people put together a roster just using the free agents (RFAs included... assume an offer sheet)

Assume our assets moving out just move for picks or prospects and no roster guys coming back.... or that they are moved to get the rights to an RFA at most.

Of course seeing the current prices that guys are signing for this could be impossible to do.

Here is my attempt at it using reasonable signings... except for the one (getting Weber as an RFA) where we put all our eggs into that basket and then just fill the rest of the spots with serviceable guys.

FORWARDS

Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)

David Booth ($4.250m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Kristian Huselius ($2.500m)

Chris Higgins ($1.900m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Jannik Hansen ($1.350m)

DEFENSEMEN

- Ballard and Tanev play well together, and since we have cap space we might aswell keep Ballard as he really seemed to be coming into his own in the playoffs.

- The Moss signing doesn't have to happen, Kassian could replace him he just offers depth as he could play anywhere from 2nd to 4th lines.

Seems like we either want a top end forward or a top end defenceman.

I definitely think that is the way to go... get the best player out there and then fill the holes with journeymen.

Paying several mediocre players $3-4 million each isn't going to be as good.

Top end players remotely available (ranked in order of which I think would be best to target:

1. Weber

2. Semin

3. Nash

4. Parise

5. Suter

We lost our last 4 play off rounds on the backs of physical match up problems. I know people say our secondary scoring dissapeared. It did so because we got manhandled not because we lacked talent. We need to concentrate on size that can compliment our talent players!

And our right side D is our key weakness! (Bieksa/Tanev/Sauve is our signed depth chart!)

Now in your proposals Moen really helps our 4th line in the physical department, no other moves help really. Not because they arent good players or value (not bad at all), they just dont resolve any match up issues.

I say that also noting there is no way we sign Weber away from Nashville for essentially the money he is getting now. That considered, our right side D is horendously weak.

You asked for free agents who could help, See in no particular order > Chris Stewart, Paul Gaustad, Jason Arnott, Sheldon Souray, Scott Hannan, Brad Stuart, Mikael Samuelsson, Jordin Tootoo, Moen (who I DO like) Brad Boyes and Brand Prust as guys there is reason to think we could get who could all fill a role and help match ups. I also like Garrison or J Schultz who help on a talent basis on our right side D, as long as we also get physical help.

We could also put in wish lists > Selanne, Doan, Jagr, Stoll, Parise, Weber, Suter... But there is more reason to expect we would not get them, and we would have to shuffle the deck again to fit their payroll (save perhaps Jagr), which equally makes them un realistic.

Dustin Penner? Hmmm, I'm starting to like him again when I would not have dreamed...

Highlighted guys are who I would take plus we could re-sign Bitz.

Sedin/Sedin/Burrows

Booth/Kesler/Kassian

Higgins/Arnott/Hansen

Moen/Lapierre/Bitz (I LOVE this 4th line!)

Manny

Literally anyone in 3rd or 4th line can move up to top lines if needed any combination of size (Arnott/Bitz), boardwork (Higgins/Arnott) or speed (Hansen/Higgins). Arnott is also a great 2knd line RW option, over 500 career assists suggests he can also pass the puck, a much ballyhoo'd request, but in a 220 lb body that can also fore check!

Hamhuis/Bieksa

Edler/Schultz

Ballard/Souray

Salo
