Rodney King found dead

Recommended Posts

Rodney King, the figure at the centre of the Los Angeles riots 20 years ago, has been found dead aged 47, according to police reports.

His fiancee found his body at the bottom of a swimming pool, but there was no sign of foul play.

King was a victim of police brutality in 1991, but the officers involved were acquitted the following year.

The verdict triggered clashes between black youths and police which left more than 50 dead and thousands injured.

The beating was filmed by a bystander and part of the film was shown by media outlets across the world, causing public outrage.

A later trial resulted in two of the four officers being jailed.

King suffered brain damage during the beating. He sued the City of Los Angeles and won $3.8m (£2.5m) compensation.

Rialto Police Captain Randy Deanda said on Sunday King was found "unresponsive" at the bottom of his pool and was pronounced dead at 06:11 (13:11 GMT).

I tried to check out the reaction on the Stormfront board, but their system is overloaded.

I wonder if this news has something to do with it. There must be a lot of jubilation and/or massive criticism of the guy being expressed over there.

The guy was hardly a hero or champion of civil rights. He was just a catalyst during a time when people were at their most anxious. The event that led to his fame was disgusting, but he wasn't exactly a model citizen since.

I am sorry he died, but he hadn't done anything to make the world a better place since the incident, just tried to cash in on it.

Rodney King's fiancée is telling friends Rodney had been drinking all day Saturday ... and had smoked weed in the hours leading up to his death ... sources close to King tell TMZ.

According to our sources, King's fiancée, Cynthia Kelley, is telling friends King was at the house all day drinking, and he smoked marijuana at some point, before she went to bed at 2:00 AM.

We're told Kelley says she next saw King at around 5:00 AM when she was awoken by him screaming in the backyard. Our sources say Kelley found King naked, banging on the glass, and she called out to him, "What's wrong, Rodney?"

Kelley is telling friends she then went to grab her phone when she heard a big splash. She then went to the backyard and discovered him in the bottom of the pool and called police.

Paramedics attempted to revive King, but were unsuccessful.

Looks like another "success" for Dr. Drew.

Anyone else see the irony in this?

Cops have confiscated weed plants and a pitchfork from Rodney King's home as evidence in the death investigation.

Cops are also looking into reports that Rodney was crying uncontrollably shortly before his next-door neighbor heard a splash.

Rodney's fiancee reportedly told police she didn't try to pull Rodney from the pool because she's a poor swimmer.

Meanwhile, the coroner has completed the autopsy on King's body ... but will not announce an official cause of death until additional toxicology tests and tissue studies have been performed.

The results usually take between 4 to 6 weeks.

A rep for the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department tells us, "There will be no final ruling as to the cause and manner of death until the requested test results have been received and reviewed in context with the autopsy findings."

TMZ broke the story ... King's fiancee discovered his body at the bottom of the pool at the couple's home in Rialto, CA on Sunday morning.

King's fiancee insists Rodney had been drinking and smoking pot in the hours before his death -- and believes his death was accidental. However, people close to Rodney are concerned she's not telling the whole story.

Anyone ever see the clip of him drunk at work for Celebrity Rehab? He was keeling over on the bed of the towtruck as they were lowering a car, he almost got his head crushed on camera.

I feel so bad for the guy, yes he got paid but at what cost? Don't think for a second money solves problems, and when you are dependant on any substances all that coin at once can be a death sentence.
