WASHINGTON CAPITALS TRADE MARCUS FOLIGNO TO THE RANGERS FOR SERGEI GONCHAR

Gonchar-580x374.jpg

The Washington Capitals made a bold move with the deadline approaching in acquiring 39 year old defenseman Sergei Gonchar from the New York Rangers. General Manager da.moose paid a hefty price for the Russian vet. Young forward Marcus Foligno was the centerpiece going back to New York along with prospect Chris Brown and a 2nd round draft pick.

We now go live in Washington where General Manager da.moose and newly acquired Sergei Gonchar will answer questions from the media.

Reporter: “Sergei, I want to start off by saying welcome to Washington! Also, Can you compare your game now to where it was at last time you won the Stanley Cup.”

Gonchar: “Thank you very much. I feel really good about my game right now. I might not have the speed that I used to but I think that I am smarter now and that helps my game in lots of ways to.”

Reporter: “da.moose, With the majority of your team at such a young age, what made you decide to trade away a 21 year old roster player?”

da.moose: “We see a window of opportunity with guys like Elias, Datsyuk and Hamrlik in the lineup. These guys are the leaders of our team and are playing here with the intention of winning a Stanley Cup. It is my duty as a General Manager to give them the best opportunity I can to win a Stanley Cup. If at this point I wasn’t doing that for my guys that have worked so hard, why would they want to play here?”

Reporter: “Do you feel as though your team is good enough to win the Stanley Cup this season?”

da.moose: “Well we just acquired arguably the greatest Russian defenseman to ever play the game. He is sixth overall in all defenseman points this season. I think that we are a lot closer to reaching the ultimate goal than we were yesterday.”

Reporter: “This one’s for Sergei. You had a No-Trade-Clause that you waived to play for Washington. Can you explain why?”

Gonchar: “To get away from Torts (laughs). No in all seriousness I would like to thank the entire New York Rangers for treating me with the utmost respect and helping me get my game to the point it is at right now. To answer your question though, Playing with guys like Pavel and Patrik will be really cool. They have been in the league almost as long as I have and I have the utmost respect for them as hockey players and as people. I think that the Capitals have a real chance to win a Stanley Cup and I really want to contribute to that. As I have gotten older I have also learned to love being a teacher to young players. I feel like I have had a lot of success in the NHL and young players coming into the NHL these days are so talented and eager to learn. There are tons of young players here and it just makes everything so much more exciting with young guys around. It just sounds like a fun opportunity. I am very, very excited to be a part of this.

Reporter: “Was it a tough decision to trade away Marcus Foligno and what made you pull the trigger on this particular deal?”

da.moose: “Marcus is a great young man and a terrific hockey player. Trading away a 21 year old of his calibre is never an easy thing to do. However, we have a lot of other young talented wingers on our team right now that I feel comfortable with moving forward. Long term we have Kaner, Silfverberg, Kreider, Kassian, uhhh Turris is playing a lot of wing for us right now. Our staff decided that we could move one of them and remain a top offensive team. Foligno was just the guy that we decided could use a change of scenery and will get a lot more minutes and job security in New York. It’s a business and we feel like today we moved a piece from somewhere that we are very strong in order to add at a position where we are currently much weaker.”

Reporter: “Are you going to make any other trades to bolster your lineup at the trade deadline?”

da.moose: “Well if I wasn’t asking around I wouldn’t be doing a very good job as a General Manager. Clearly I think this team is competitive or I wouldn’t have traded for Gonchar. As it stands our team still has holes, most notably at the third line center position. Boyd has done a terrific job for us playing that role this season and will continue to take key faceoffs and kill penalties. We have some very talented wingers in the bottom six right now and if we could get a more offensive minded guy to play with them I think we could get a lot more production. Does that mean I don’t trust Boyd to play the third line center position? Obviously not. General Managers are smarter now than they were when I entered the league nearly three years ago. As I said I see a window of opportunity and as long as we get our guys back I feel that next season our window is still open. We will not make a move that we think will make our team weaker next season than it is this season.”

da.moose: “Anymore questions?”.... (Silence)

da.moose: “Thank you”

MSG NEWS 2013:

In a rare night in net Steve Mason 10 looks to improve on his last three starts, the most recent being March 5th.

Sheldon Souray 14 and Sami Salo will patrol the blueline with a Forward Contingent of

Matt Stajan 3, Jiri Hudler 4, Brad Staubitz, Radek Dvorak and Dave Steckel.

Will the team respond to losing perennial all-star Sergei Gonchar with a big night? I can't wait to find out.

31 point night from four games. Nice. That is a decent response.
