Defensive Possibilities

CDCLand is in shock as word of Justin Schultz going to the Oilers spreads across the hockey world.

We wanted the homegrown talent, but Schultz wanted more playing time.

Honestly, this kid was unproven and may prove to be more of a bust than anything.

In my opinion the Canucks are still going to make a defensive acquistion and if I am right, it will be a major one.

Gillis cleared space on the blueline and will still need to fill it. Word is Gillis is much more concerned about making the blueline larger and harder to get through for this season.

Schultz is a PP specialist and has a good shot, but as far as the other side of the coin, Schultz is not a very physical defenseman. He is not intimidating in any way from a checking standpoint.

All I can say (about what I've heard) is that Dan Hamhuis is directly involved in the decision of this individual to consider moving home.

For similar money, it may be possible to land a guy with similar attributes to Schultz, but much further along in his development, also a homegrown guy, but 35 lbs more on his frame, and despite being left-handed is used to playing on the right side (beside Campbell). People are quick to assume Garrison's production was generated by Campbell, but really, the Panthers are a low scoring team, and the Canucks are not exactly chopped liver.

"Garrison’s strengths are his exceptional skating ability and passing touch. He has good on-ice awareness and transitional capability. Garrison is adept at contributing to offensive without sacrificing defensive responsibility. Lacks an element of consistent physical play but it’s an area he’s working to improve. Garrison appears very comfortable on the ice and is a free-wheeling defender whose strength is generating scoring chances. He has terrific hockey sense and is an ideal power-play quarterback." HF.

Schultz may not have been the best quarterback option on the market if that is what the Canucks were looking for (as opposed to a big mean right handed shutdown guy). They could potentially add both if they move someone or if we can't sign Salo.

No we won't Gillis will stand by and watch, he won't be agressive at all in getting him, just like he has been with all the other star players that go to the market.

I won't be that surprised if we only pick up role players tommorow, if we don't sign any Significant players then I will be very disappointed but not surprised whatsoever.
