It is hard to compete with places that have no state/province income taxes

Alberta has provincial income taxes, it is just a lower amount than other provinces. What it does not have is a provincial sales tax. BC could be a better tax location if we stopped electing left leaning, spend first governments. And if the city of Vancouver started actually producing something besides restaurants.

In four years the Oilers will be in the exact same position they are now. A bunch of young talent that will never stay. in 4 years they will not have Hall, Eberle or Schultz. What people don't know is that the Canucks had every intention of signing Garrison all along, and told Schultz he wouldn't get the ice time he wants, and to sign for 2 years with a team that he will get signifigant ice time with and they'll be interested again in 2 years when he is a unrestricted free agent.

The salary cap is going to destroy that team just as their core will be solid enough to make them cup contenders. They are going to have a small window between now, and the time their young guns entry level deals are finished. When that happens, they are going to be in for a major overhaul.
