What is Shaone Morrison's Story?

Recommended Posts

Just curious...what is the story on/knock against UFA defenceman Shaone Morrison? The only recollection I have of him is a story about him biting someone's finger which he vehemently denied while he was with the Washington Capitals.

Did the usual The Hockey News player report on him, and they see him in a favourable manner (defensive, mobile, mean streak)...big -- 6'4"/217 lbs.; Vancouver, BC-born; 30 years old in December; 480 NHL games; former 1st round pick by Bruins in 2001.

Cap hit in 2011-2012 would have been $2MM but spent the entire season in the AHL (was his cap hit buried in the minors by the Sabres?) after spending 6 straight seasons in the NHL (didn't know this about him).

Without knowing any intangibles about him, Morrison looks like a good depth pick up, possibly at a minimal cap hit.

Any insights into Morrison would be appreciated.

He had 5 points in 62 games the previous season, not the best totals and he takes some bad penalties.

They signed some big contracts last offseason, and he got send down for some cap relief.

Might still be a decent bottom pair D, but he isn't anything really special.

Wouldn't really use the word mobile to describe him and not particularly mean either. He was a serviceable #6 defensive defenseman that didn't really bring much else to the table. He was beaten out by other defensemen on the Sabres' roster and his cap hit was too high for a guy who'd be spending most of his time in the press box.

He signed in the KHL a little while ago. Would have been a decent Rome replacement IMO if the price was right. Oh well.

I'd take a chance with him, pay him $800-$900k and have him as another experienced depth D option, or at worst keep him down with the Wolves; don't see the harm of these low-risk moves, plus he could become more motivated to earn another contract and a raise.
