Armada
No sh*t . I said "let's say" and "next top free agent" .... Used him as an example? If you get it?
iLLmAtlc
What I don't really like about this: MG and Gilman both came out to try and reassure the Canucks fanbase that they wanted Weber. It sounds like they wanted him bad, but not bad enough to make an offer? Sounds like they got a really good sense what Weber was after, term and money, so there was really no way of him signing a 1 year pact so Vancouver could try and get him July 2013. With all of that in mind what they did made no sense: 1. If you make an offer, Nashville matches, you lose out on Weber 2. If you don't make an offer, you lose out on Weber Canucks went with option 2 meaning there was zero chance of them getting him. So really, how badly did they really want him? Bure fan
All I'm saying is Weber wouldn't. Wasn't really a funny joke
Bieksallent_Canuck
This was before he signed the offer sheet with Philadelphia. He either goes to Philadelphia or Nashville at this point.
Jordan Subban
Uhh no way tthis works.. what like 5 mil in Cap space... we would have to trade Luo, Raymond and Ballard and get nothing but Draft picks in a return.
DollarAndADream
I think the title is a little misleading. It should be stated in the title that it's 1 year 1m with 13m bonus. Weber chose to abuse the current CBA though, and now he's going to be rich. Not that 14m from the Canucks isn't rich.
CaNuCkSLoUiE23
For that price, I'm glad he didn't sign with us.
coastal1
Are you sure about that? when I look at ehrhoff's contract on capgeek http://capgeek.com/p...play.php?id=121 it shows a caphit of 4 mill even though he had a 8 mill signing bonus. I think that's the whole point of those massive signing bonuses.
Watermelons
Here's my idea. Next top free agent that Canucks want they should do a top secret signing. Let's say Weber is a UFA. Canucks offer a 5 year 5 million dollar contract. 1 million each year. This is how it will go down to unsuspecting fellow GM's. Then the city of Vancouver like it or not develops a new 'Weber tax' . We all pay an extra 150$ on our taxes even if your not a fan, and if you dont like it, you can getttttt out!!! Weber gets his money ...We get our cup. It's a fool proof plan! Let's do it guys! Who's with me?
DeNiro
But by next offseason, he would be an unrestricted free agent?
DeNiro
If Gillis were smart he should be working out a trade now. Tell Nashville that if they match we'll be willing to give you this package next summer. Obviously it would have to be pretty enticing. But basically anything to convince them that they can get alot if they can manage to hold onto him until next summer. Too bad you can't include money in trades anymore. I'm sure Nashville could use some.
RXnucks975
I just don't see Nashville letting him go, so it would make sense for Gillis to try a max deal for one year so that he can try and get him next year. But 100million dollars is hard to turn down
WHL rocks
You guys need to get it through your head. Even if you throw money at the player it doesn't mean they'll want to sign with us. You know why we didn't get Suter, Parise, Weber and maybe Doan. Because maybe they don't want to play here.. You can't simply sign all the free agents.. ninja321
That just proves just because someone is from BC does not mean that they would come here let alone a hometown discount. I'm glad to hear MG tried though it just insures the fans that he's going all out to win the cup soon.
nd84
There, now people can shut up and stop complaining that MG did nothing.
DeNiro
Why would NSH trade Weber after paying $27 million dolllars of his contract. If they match they keep him long term. The contract is heavily front loaded to discourage the exact scenario you propose.

UFCanuck
MG didn't have the guts to offer him a long contract. It's not that he didn't want to sign here, it's that our management didn't want to give him a long-term contract that he deserved. MG can try and twist it and say how Weber didn't really want to play here, but he thinks these players should bend over backwards to play here. Sure, it would be nice to get Weber on a tiny discount, but he is the type of player that you throw all of the money at and get rid of underused by AV ballard/ falling raymond/injured manny. That's close to 9 mill right there and then we are still going to get rid of Lu.
