(Proposal) Edmonton - Phoenix

Recommended Posts

Thought of this idea a while back and almost forgot about it. So here it is

To Edmonton: Keith Yandle

To Phoenix: Ales Hemsky + Linus Omark + Ladislav Smid

Pros: For Edmonton, getting Yandle solidifies their top 4 of J. Schultz, Yandle, N. Schultz, and Whitney. For Phoenix, they get a big, skilled forward that would replace Whitney on the Coyotes' top line.

Cons: For Edmonton, Yandle does turn the puck over quite often, so hopefully the Oilers' coaching staff can help Keith out with that. For Phoenix, Hemsky is a little injury prone, but when healthy he can produce.

Thoughts?

Uh no, Phoenix can get way more than that for Yandle. Here's a fun fact for you. In the last 3 years, Yandle a defenceman has 143 points. Hemsky a forward has 100. So you're telling me Phoenix should lose their best D and the 143 points he's produced in the last 3 years for an injury prone Hemsky? Not to mention Yandle hasn't missed a game in 4 years.

Depending on how Yakupov plays, Hemsky could be an overpaid 3rd line winger for the Oil, and physically he may not be suitable for that. What's more, with their mishmash of "who's-who" guys up front (more like "who's that?") and dearth of scoring Hemmer would have trouble putting up the numbers he could at least put up in Edmonton, since "at worst" he could still end up setting up Ryan Smyth or Magnus Paajarvi, who are more talented. (Nothing against Lauri Korpikoski's 17 or Mikkel Boedker's 11 goals last season, they're not Shane Doan and Ray Whitney-caliber... that and the Coyotes better hope Vrbata plays like he did last season otherwise they could really be in trouble up front-- plus both Hemmer and Radim are RW so it's not like they'll play together).

The Coyotes could be better off keeping their strong D-core and picking up forward pieces here and there, or if Keith Yandle really is being offered around, the team better get someone better than Dangles. They could really use two forwards who can score in exchange for their defensive anchor (Paajarvi and Gagner for Yandle-- both teams upgrade in an area that they need help in, and hopefully the scoring potential offsets their offensive inconsistency for the two young Oil forwards.)

I actually think Yandle has become overrated. He's not the type of defenseman that you sell the farm to get. He's not going to carry a team on his back in the playoffs. He's not an ideal #1 defenseman.

Smid is extremely underrated and the Oilers best defenseman. He plays 18-20 minutes a night at even strength, kills penalties and is one of the best shot blockers in the league. He brings tons of leadership and a physical presence that the Oilers desperately need.

Yandle is definitely worth more than Smid...but Smid isn't the guy the Oilers give up to get help on the back end. Especially if Hemsky is already the center piece. It would be a 2 steps forward and 1 step back type of trade for the Oilers defense. Edmonton needs to use their forwards and defensive prospects to land another top 4 defenseman. That way it's 2 steps forward and no steps back for the current group on the blue line.

Throw in one of Edmontons prospects such as Paajarvi, Musil, or Klefbom, and maybe Phoenix does it.
