The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Max Pacioretty to a six-year contract extension.

The deal carries an average annual value of $4.5 million.

The 23-year-old had a career year in his fourth NHL campaign, leading the team in scoring with 65 points. His 33 goals and 32 assists in 79 games were both career-highs.

His offensive output was enough to land him the Bill Masterton Trophy after he missed significant time at the end of 2010-11 with a fractured vertebra. That injury -sustained after a hit from Zdeno Chara - ended his season.

The team announced the deal via Twitter on Monday night.

Pacioretty had just finished the final year of a two-year, $3.25 million contract he signed with the Canadiens in 2011.

More details to follow.

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Cole

Bourque - Galchenyuk - Gionta

Prust - Gomez - Eller

Armstrong - White - Moen

Subban - Markov

Kaberle - Gorges

Y. Weber - Emelin

If Galchenyuk's ready they could most definetly make the playoffs. But if he isn't the line up without him could still get the 6th or 7th seed

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Cole

Bourque - Eller - Gionta

Prust - Gomez - Moen

Desharnais - White - Armstrong

If they can get rid of Gomez' cap hit and bring in a true shutdown third line center, they could have one of the grittiest third line's in the league.
