CFL/BC Lions Thread

Shift-4

When it comes to support, the team's outreach is horrendous, particularly when it comes to a youth contingent of fans. It almost feels like they don't care about courting them. Like "we're the Lions, people will come to us".

The average fan age is increasing every year. They need to change that at a base level before the stadium will start filling up again.

To be fair they are trying. The CFL as a league have rebranded their crest and they have added new uniforms with Adidas and tailgating and lounges in new stadiums to try to attract the younger demographic with a type of party/event scene. They are going harder on social media trying to show a CFL game being an event and an experience rather than just a football game.

The Lions also had $12 tickets or free entry for kids 12 and under or something for this game.

Problem is the Seahawks being hot right now makes them very popular with fans young and old in the lower mainland.

The NFL in general is younger fans as the CFL is still not seen as being cool to represent around town.

You see Seahawks and even other NFL jerseys or Hockey hats or apparel but not CFL around town.

There are for sure more older people who are the diehard CFL fans vs NFL fans.

Even the Whitecaps are more popular with the crowd chants and the young kids love soccer nowadays with Messi and Neymar etc so they are already into the sport and understand the game.

It all comes down to winning. Lions have sucked at home the past 3 years. Seahawks start losing more than they win and no one will care about them around here again.

As I said they really need to keep the kids under 12 for $5 bucks promotion.  Create fans young.  Lets face it, it's affordable for parents with young kids.  Get the kids fans at a young age.  No one really cared about the Whitecaps until they started winning more than they were losing.

This is a fickle fan base for any team.

Whitecaps also have the novelty factor over the Lions and the Seahawks have gotten more fans since they became a perennial favorite. Mind you they already had fans in Vancouver as the "local NFL team" like the Bills in Toronto.

They need to win but not as bad as the Argos and to be entertaining to stay relevant.

I totally agree that they need to keep the $5 to build a new generation of fans as we Lions fans always hear that they lost a complete generation of them. The Lions have had problems trying to fill those end zone seats for several years now. It's not surprising since they charge $43 bucks for them which is overpriced in my opinion. They did introduce a upper endzone for $35 but I don't even know if that's enough. Everytime the camera goes sets up for the extra point, you can see entire sections barely filled. If they aren't moving the seats anyways, they should just make them way cheaper for the casual fan. Paper the crowd if they have to. The most important thing is to create a buzz and make people have a great time. I remember when Safeway use to sell endzone tickets during the Ackles era, they were affordable and we would fill them up quite well. It was rowdy in those sections since it was the "cheap" seats. With the entertainment dollar being so thin in for the average Vancouverite, the Lions have to find a way to get that casual fan to come.

The novelty factor will wear off. Lions had that as well until bad management killed the fan base.  Whitecaps will not be immune when they start losing.  Hopefully they wont have the same issues the Lions faced back in the day.  The Seahawks had very few fans until about 10 years ago or so.  Again that stems from them actually being a contender.  That and Century Link being built.  Also helped that our dollar was worth more.

One issue the Lions and the CFL have for that matter is that they almost have the "Nickelback" issue.  People have chosen to hate because it's the in thing to do. You ask most people why they hate the CFL, most don't really have a valid reason.  They just hate it because their friends do and it's trendy.

It's a shame TSN is the only source for CFL.  The bias against the Lions by the commentators is annoying.

really annoying..Black loses it when any eastern team does anything..its so obvious...Cuthbert and Suitor are a better team..

I feel a little for Lulay..finally healthy and all he does is carry a clipboard.

Screw TSN, the only talk that matters is what happens on the field.

Makes the Lions kicking butt feel that much more satisfying.

Yeah, Hamilton puts a couple plays together and he starts to lose his mind.  Lions D has been playing lights out.  Continues to say how bad the Hamilton offense and he stays silent about how good the Lions D has been.

It must suck a little but he did say during preseason that he was passing the torch so to speak and had no issue as a back up. Plus he has been holding the ball on field goals, LOL!
