Seeing a fair amount of talk today about the new name being the Edmonton Eagles.

Serious question: are there really eagles in Edmonton?

I definitely don’t recall seeing any whenever I’ve been there.

I’m sure they do have some eagles. But how many? How common are they?

I read somewhere that they only have a couple breeding pairs. Another place said they count somewhere between 2-6 eagles in a birding survey every year.

Sounds pretty rare to me.

At least compared to Vancouver.

I mean, just driving down the 99 by Mud Bay, I see dozens of eagles every single trip. Same thing with several other spots around the Lower Mainland. Maybe there aren’t too many eagles nesting inside of Vancouver city limits (other than out at UBC and at Stanley Park) but eagles are definitely a common sight in and around the Vancouver area.

Can’t really say the same for Edmonton. Then again, I don’t live there. But I’ve visited Edmonton several times. Never saw an eagle.

Does anyone really think “eagles” when they think of Edmonton?

(Fights off urge to insert a mean joke here.)

I mean, sure, it’s a cool bird and a decent enough name for any sports team. But it really seems like they’re just choosing random “E” words so they can keep the EE logo.

And there must be better “E” words that really say Edmonton.

(Fights off second urge to insert a mean joke.)

Yeah....they really should go with the "Cougars"....

Anyone who's been to an Edmonton bar has seen plenty of them....

Seemed inevitable.

I love the CFL but their TV contract just isn't big enough to be able to play without fans.

Yep. The quintessential gate driven league. They needed that money from the Feds to make it happen. (I agree with not giving it to them, BTW)

Totally agree.  Makes me wonder how the CHL thinks they will be able to come back any time this year.  They're totally gate dependent too.

So if the league folds or loses franchises would a government support have been warranted considering there will be future lost federal revenue in terms of gst collected on tickets, merchandise food and beverage and income tax on player and other employee salaries.  Even one year of these revenues gets to what the final ask of the league was.  We don’t need to play football but the contributions to the Canadian economy of this league are very real.

I think with the current financial situation in the country, we have to pick our spots.

If there truly is a market for CFL football, it will survive a missed season.

I miss the CFL!

Me too.   As summer fades out it was always a welcome way to divert my time away from the beach/trails to football.  I love the NFL too but am pretty convinced it'll be gone soon too...with the way things are going and COVID starting to hit the teams.

We can't have nice things right now but the sad part for me is that it seems like this will be the new "normal" for quite some time.  Back in March, we all kind of figured we'd be good to go again by now.  Just really getting started it seems.

I hope the CFL can survive...not sure if it will.

I wonder how the CFL can continue going forward.

While it does have a core rabid fanbase, it isn't enough to sustain the whole operation.

As blasphemous as it sounds, should the CFL just end up as the "AHL" of the NFL with American rules?  I mean Canadian rules is unique, but unlike European hockey leagues.... the CFL is literally just an hour drive away from their NFL counterparts.  The hockey leagues KHL and SHL, or the baseball league NPB are able to survive because they don't actually compete directly with the NHL or MLB respectively as they are worlds away.

Long time owner of the BC. Lions, Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger Cats and the Vancouver Whitecaps/86 ers David Braley passes at 79 years of age.

Braley died on October 26, 2020, at his home in Burlington, Ontario.[

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Braley

"

Braley owned the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 1987 until 1990 when the team returned to community ownership.[6] He returned to the CFL with his purchase of the Lions in 1997.[5] He also owned the Vancouver 86ers soccer club, later the Vancouver Whitecaps, of the A-League, keeping professional soccer alive from 1997–2000.[7] In early 2010, he also became owner of the Argonauts, becoming the only person to own two CFL teams simultaneously.[8] In an effort to minimize the ensuing controversy, the league has scheduled games between the Lions and Argonauts early in the season in order to avoid possible playoff implications. He announced the sale of the Argonauts to Bell Media and Larry Tanenbaum on May 20, 2015, with the deal to close at the end of the year.[9]

Braley has served as the chair of the CFL's Board of Governors and was the CFL's interim commissioner from March 2002 to November 2002.[5]

Braley was chairman of the 2003 World Cycling Championships in Hamilton.[10]

He was a director of Ontario's successful bid to host the 2015 Pan Am Games and was subsequently a member of the board overseeing preparations for the games.[6] Braley resigned upon his appointment to the Senate, as the body's by-laws specifically bar elected officials and Senators from serving on the board.[11]

Numerous institutions across Hamilton, Ontario are named in his honour, including the David Braley Athletic Centre and the David Braley Health Sciences Centre at McMaster University, the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre at Mohawk College, and the David Braley Resaerch Institute at the Hamilton General Hospital.

In 2012, Braley was elected into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame."

CFL, XFL discussing potential partnership to ‘grow the game of football’

TORONTO — Twenty-six years after being released by the Calgary Stampeders, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson is looking at re-establishing his CFL ties.

Both the CFL and XFL revealed Wednesday they’re poised to begin serious discussions about a potential partnership. Neither side would say who initiated talks first, only that they’ve agreed to collaborating on ways to grow football.

Johnson, an actor and former pro wrestler, is a co-owner of the American-based XFL.

“It’s an exciting moment for us to really start talking about how do we collaborate,” CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie said. “That’s a great word and it’s at the heart of this.

“Where that leads we don’t know, but it’s going to be exciting. Sometimes we over-use the phrase world class but they are world-class people.”

In a statement Wednesday, the XFL put its plans to return in the spring of 2022 on hold, “pending the outcome of our conversations with the CFL.”

The timing of the talks is curious, given the CFL has a bigger, more immediate challenge before it _ resuming play in 2021 after being forced to cancel the ’20 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Look, we’re full speed ahead on our return-to-play plan for the 2021 CFL season,” Ambrosie said. “All of this is about what will happen in the future.

The CFL rules have allowed non prototypical players to have a career in the CFL rather than the NFL.   speed smaller stature guys like Flutie and many others.

If you go to 4 downs the CFL becomes nothing more than the AHL to the NHL forever and that's that.

What does the CFL want to be?

I read an article on TSN today that I can no longer find. Basically stating how the planned partnership with the XFL fell through and how attendance prior to covid has been waning in the major cities, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. I wonder if it's cause or coincidence that these three cities are also MLS cities? The last time I watched a CFL game I just felt bored after a quarter of watching. I mean they say the NFL is bad with it's pauses, I think the CFL is worse. I remember going to games in the 90s especially during the Grey Cup run of '94 and there would be a good 30000-40000 people there on most days. They said prior to covid there was only one 20000+ game.

I don't think it's any coincidence, the game is boring, the rules while they support passing offence are boring, the quality of play is terrible. I honestly would rather see the NFL in Canada at this point, I know that's probably sacrilege to many of you, but I just don't see how football is going to survive in Canada when real football is looking like it will soon surpass it.
