NHL contraction fun.

First of all, this is just for fun, I really don't think that the league will drop some teams.

But

with the idea of contracting the league being thrown about, I thought it could be fun to see what kind of players we could end up with.

For the purpose of this discussion I have eleminated Phoenix and Columbus for a few reasons. They both were at the bottom of Forbes 2012 list of team earnings ( $-24.4 mil and $-13.7 mil respectively). Phoenix as well has many issues with Glendale that we are all aware of and Columbus has had very little success in this league since its inception and does not have a history of prior success to fall back on like NYI or EDM. I thought about eliminating one or both of the Florida teams or Anahiem as well but drew the line at 2 because of recent successes in all three teams and that even though they are in the bottom 5 in earnings, none were less than $-10 million.

I figured if this were to happen that the League would put some rules in place to allow some contracts to be bought out or renegotiated but still tried to match players and current salaries up as best as I could.

I used these lists to decide try and figure out rosters.

Also for fun I randomized the draft order with http://www.random.org/lists/

Here is how I think it would play out for the first round.

  1. MTL- Johanson

  2. TBL - Johnson

  3. WIN - Larsson

  4. OTT - Yandle

  5. WAS - Smith

  6. NYR - Tyutin

  7. MIN - Michalek

  8. ANH- Nikitin

  9. TOR - Dubinsky

  10. CAR - Wisniewski

  11. DET - Moore

  12. BUF - Doan

  13. COL - Umberger

  14. NYI - Hanzal

  15. CAl - Vermette

  16. PIT - Foligno

  17. SJS - Gormley

  18. DAL - Brassard

  19. EDM - Murray

  20. NAS - Morris

  21. VAN - Boedker

  22. BOS - Dorsett

  23. FLO - Vrbata

  24. NJD - Gillies

  25. LAK - Rundlbad

  26. PHI - Klesla

  27. STL - Tikhonov

  28. CHI - Prospal

I thought that the 2013 draft would be in order of last years standing so this would would be randomized, kinda like the Crosby draft but without weighting

According to Forbes Florida actually was better off than a number of teams last year ( STL, NYI, TBL, ANH,CLB,PHO)

I had trouble figuring out who I thought VAN would pick and thought about Vrbata, but felt Boedker had better long term potential.

If EDM had the #1 pick I would of sent Larsson to them but MTL did and I think they need a C more than a D.

I almost sent Hanzal to TOR or MIN but felt that Burke would go for the American Dubinsky before and MIN needed some more help on D. As for Gormley and Rundbland they are prospects still even if very good ones and thought most teams would try to help themselves now instead of later. Obviously some teams I thought would go with the future ( VAN, DET, LAK, SJS etc) opposed to an older player who might or might not continue success ( Vrbata, Sullivan, Prospal etc)
