mrsasaki Posted November 29, 2012 Share Posted November 29, 2012 Forward: Nicklas Jensen- Top 6 power forward. I like the comparisons to James Neal. Zack Kassian- Top 6, aggressive power forward. I'll go with the flow and say Milan Lucic. Anton Rodin/Bill Sweatt- 3rd line 2-way player. Mason Raymond is an ok comparable, without the offensive upside. 50/50 chance. Alexander Mallet/Alex Friesen- gritty 4th-liner that is not a liability in his own end and can chip offensively. Lets stick with the Canucks comparisons and say Max Lapierre. These two are definatley not locks but I think have a decent chance. Jordan Schroeder- 2-way middle-6 center. Comparable to Andrew Cogliano. Brendan Gaunce- Middle-6 center with strong 2-way ability. The general comparison seems to be Jordan Staal so we'll go with that. Archibald, Labate, Grenier have a little chance but not great. Defence: Chris Tanev- Top-4 puck-moving defenseman. Maybe Kyle Quincey or Marc-Eduard Vlasic minus the physicality. Frank Corrado- Top-4 two-way defenseman. People have been comparing him to Bieksa, which I think is ok, just without that mean streak Bieksa has. Maybe he does have it, I haven't seen him play too much. Kevin Connauton- 2nd-pair defenseman, PP quarterback. Joni Pitkanen or Joe Corvo are the ones that come to me right off the top of my head. Yann Sauve- Mainly bottom-pair defenseman, but can jump up into the top 4 if needed. I think Johnathan Ericsson is a fair comparison. Patrick McNally- Same role as Sauve, just with more offense and less defense. We'll say maybe Sami Salo as his highest potential. Price, Tommernes, McEneny will probably end up as depth guys, maybe could crack a bottom pairing. Goalies: Eddie Lack- slightly above average goalie. Semyon Varlamov could work as a comparison, hopefully more consistent than him. Joe Cannata- one of the hardest Canucks prospects to rate. He could be a backup or he could be a starter. Its not a really qualified opinion, I have only seen him play a couple of times but I do not see the instincts that Hodgson had. To make up for his size he needs more than speed. Gaunce seems destined for our stereotypical 3rd line center. Malhotra who can chip in? 2knd line potential when either Hank or Kess moves on. Tanev? Everybody loves him, except me? When he was paired with Hamhuis, Sutter immediately targetted him and punished us for having a small guy on a stopper line. And he's not fast enough, nor does he carry the puck, or shoot well to be a top 4 guy. He's just an amazingly efficient composed player; who is fantastic when not overwhelmed by the top big athletes some teams can throw out there. great 3rd pair and fill guy! Connauton; Think Mathieu Schneider, just not at his peak. Great PP specialist, good as long as you can cover him the rest of the time. Lack; great backup, would push for a starter role on many teams. The last I saw Schroeder live was four years ago at the WJC's and his speed bought him some opportunities he did little with. And I doubt he has Hodgson's shot. But he was a stud U18 player and in 1st year college. Could be the type of player like Ronning was; good enough to compliment a Mogilny (nothing wrong with that) if we have the match up for him? Tanev; find a replay of game 1 last year against LA. He could not deal with the size and speed of fore checkers that were thrown at him. I wish we could teach his composure and instincts to someone that was bigger or more gifted athletically. I know he is a darling in Vancouver, particularly on CDC, but he has limitations. These are the one's a disagree with. And on Kass I agree with what you said, I think he could be very similar points/skill wise as Scott Hartnell, with maybe a bit more brute toughness and tenacity. (Just wanted to throw that in) Schroeder: He's a dangerous player, I see a bit more pure offensive ability/upside with him than I did with Cody, maybe aside from playmaking on the PP. Cody was great at making unexpected plays, and QBing the PP from the half wall. he has great passing/playmaking ability and when the puck is in a controlled state like a PP or when you have the puck down low I think he has top notch playmaking ability then he also has a good slap shot but I think Schroeder has a better wrist shot and he is better at making plays on the rush, he is more agile & elusive and he just always looks so dangerous when he has the puck on his stick, he seems like he could make something happen at anytime, you add in that his defensive game is getting better, the size doesn't effect him as much as people think and that he has the speed to compensate for it, and also that we are patient with our prospects and willing to give chances, I think he will play in the NHL for us and produce in an offensive role. Gaunce: He's tough to get a read on, initally I though lesser version of Jordan Staal, but recently and the more I think about it, the perfect comparisons to me seems to be Brooks Laich in terms of playing style, although I think Gaunce might have a tad more offensive upside in terms of shooting and passing, but defensively and as an overall game, them seem like similar players witha bit different look. Tanev: I think he will be a top 4 guy for sure, and the reason I think this is because he just is so calm and cool and is so good at making the reliable plays, he doesn't have the big shot, he doesn't have the lightning quick speed (Although he is quite mobile) He doesn't have the physicalilty, and so on. Like he doesn't have one big physical skill that stands out but he has the ability to make great passes, make calm plays and the right plays. He will be important due to his reliability. Tough player to make comparisons for but I would say he plays a similar game to Sami Salo. (With less size and without the big shot) Connaution: To me the perfect comparison here is Ehrhoff, in the role that he has with us in 2010/11, he's a 3rd pair guy with the ability to move into the top 4 with injuries, and also as a PP guy he is very similar to Ehrhoff IMO, Skates well on the breakout/joining the play. Doesn't control the entire PP but he has the big shot and makes good passes/plays. Lack: Good NHL starter, I think a good comparison (for a career model/path not skillset) is Jonas Hiller, at times he is really good and at times he is just an average starter. I think that is a good similarity for Lack. Rodin: I can see a 3rd Liner. or 2nd/3rd liner tweener just due to the fact he does have a bit of offensive upside, I think a good comparison is Sean Bergenheim. I see him along those lines, someone who has a two-way skillset, can contribute at both ends but isn't amazing in either area, doesn't have amazing offensive ability, or skating ability or defensive ability but brings a good mix of all 3 to make for a decent 3rd liner. Neil's a 3rd-liner at best, just a tougher Jannik Hansen. If we're going to compare guys, I'd say Ryan Clowe is better comparison. Unless you do mean James Neal, which id be happily surprised by!
