Rate The Last Movie You Saw - 2

I'll be the first to admit I'm a bit biased for the points I posted about. Although I do think it has some memorable moments regardless IMHO, especially the part where the old guy talks about what he did to deserve to be there

Can't argue with personal preference. If you love soccer and you haven't seen "The Damned United", get on that right now. Hands down the best soccer film, if not best sports film.

The Butler - 7.5/10

Good true story with a barrage of famous actors during racial dynamics, family life and presidencies of the 20's to the present.

Best movie so far this year; Guardians of the Galaxy 9.5/10. One if the funniest and entertaining films my family has ever seen

No review yet, but started Hitchcock's "Frenzy" 2 days ago. His only first (and I believe only) rated "R" film. Wasn't going to watch any of his film past "The Birds", but decided not to be such a d-bag.

That said, so far I'm not too impressed. My wife had to leave the room during the first rape/murder scene. Not nearly as graphic as what they show today, but more disturbing, that's for sure. However, the shot of the woman's "death face" was ridiculous/awesome.

So far, I'd give it a 5/10, if only for the absolutely ludicrous "death face".

mad men is really fantastic. some serious melodrama at times, but i loved almost every minute of it. some seriously great characters in that show. you may love it!

now i need a new show as well. nothing out there that's catching my fancy.

Totally agree on MM...also in the same boat with needing a new show and looking out in to a vast sea of nothing...

Watched Grand Budapest and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Not Anderson's absolute best but a solid 7.5/10 IMO

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead - 6.5/10

Documentary on both US and CDN Netflix. If you have bad eating habits, and I mean really bad, this is good introduction in how to cleanse your system and start fresh.

So, fat (rich) Australian guy is fat and has a disease (Urticaria). Decides to take 60 days off work, fly to America, and cleanse his system by only juicing fruits and vegetables for his meals for 60 days. After 60 days, he loses about 92 pounds, his disease is entirely cured (no longer takes his pills for it). To this date (made 4 years ago), he has maintained his weight, eats very healthy, and is a NY Times Bestselling author.

Along the way, he meets a few other people who take up a cleanse with him. One woman who certainly doesn't need to lose any weight, but decides to do a 10 juice cleanse herself. She suffered from bad headaches previously, and no longer had them when she was doing the cleanse, as well as having a lot more energy. He also meets a truck driver who weighed in at an astonishing 429 lbs and had the same disease (Urticaria) as the filmmaker. This guy ended up doing the juice cleanse for 60 days as well, and lost an incredible 140 pounds during that time, while his disease was also gone entirely after the cleanse. The truck driver ended up quitting his truck driver job to find a more active job.

The documentary definitely dragged at times, and I did find myself at the 1 hour mark checking the time, but that was only for about 10 minutes, at which point it did pick up again. The filmmaker has always maintained that the cleanse he did is never meant to be a permanent solution, as you can't do this forever (nor should you). But he does maintain that perhaps for those that are morbidly obese who need to completely cleanse their system, this may be a good idea (but not without consulting a doctor first). Filmmaker still claims that he completes a 10-15 days juicing cleanse every 90 days, just to ensure that he is always on top of his health.

For people who already watch what they eat and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle, there's really nothing to see here. However, if you have been complaining about your health and have had difficulty for years trying to change things, this might be the motivation you need.

I've watched three movies since my last post here.

The Grudge 5/10
I do enjoy horror movies as a frequent guilty pleasure but had never bothered to see this one as it made waves upon release. I wasn't missing much. There is little about it that's memorable. A generic plot that is not well executed. The scenes that work the best scarcely show the spirits. They are over-exposed throughout and look bad.

Wise Blood 7/10
An interesting period piece set in the segregated south in which a military veteran returns home to find most have migrated to the city. He follows suit and tries to found a church bereft of Christ. I thought the dialogue was strong but the acting heavy handed at times. I think I may have rated this higher had my expectations been slightly tempered.

Volcano: An Inquiry Into the Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry 9/10
This is a spectacular documentary. I can't recommend it highly enough to any of his fans who may be unfamiliar with it or as an antecedent to his work. Everything as presented in the film is superb. All that restrains me from giving it a perfect 10 is its total engrossment with the negative aspects of his life.

just curious, what made you choose this? I find Lowry's life and book (Under the Volcano) absolutely fascinating. Watched this doc a few years ago and agree it's great. But where'd you find it? Was it on tv or something?

I have been watching a few Richard Burton movies of late and while scouring through his acting credits stumbled my way into this.

I punched it into google and it came up as a streamable link via the National Film Board of Canada (nfb.ca)

Always glad to hear from another Lowry fan. I've read several of his books but Volcano really is the crowning achievement.

Just got turned onto the "How Did This Get Made?" podcast, hosted by Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas, and June Diane Raphael. Holy crap, what a terrific podcast. For those that are unaware, usually the podcast ranges between 60-90 minutes, has a special guest, and the entire podcast is playfully poking fun at absolutely brutal films, that are "so bad they are good." After each episode, they go on to say whether they recommend watching it or not. Usually they do because it is so bad you can't miss it. Probably the best part of the podcast is when they read real, 5 star reviews from "amazon" written long before the podcast came out from absolutely insane supporters of the film.

For instance, during the "Mr. Nanny" featuring Hulk Hogan episode, they point out the bad editing where you can clearly see a guy chucking a dog into the water during a motorcycle montage. They then speculate for the next 5 minutes that this guy must of killed his dog and is just disposing of the body.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, because of my newfound love for this podcast, I am going to watch "Over The Top" tonight on US Netflix, starring Sylvester Stallone. An armwrestling film from 1986, where Stallone was apparently paid an incredible $12M dollars to star in this film. According to the podcast, Stallone said in an interview that "I repeatadly turned down the role in the film; however, the studio kept on offering me more and more money, where I eventually said 'Well, nobody is going to see this piece of sh*t anyway.'"

And how terrible is this film supposed to be? Well, Stallone's last name in the film is "Hawk", and throughout the movie, people constantly refer to him as either "Hawk" or "Hawks". So the writers never bothered to settle on one or the other. And Stallone's son's name in the film is "Mike Hawk". Yup, that happened.

Ah! I know this movie! I saw it in the middle of the night when I was like 15 or so, for years I thought it was a Rocky sequel where he'd given up boxing for arm wrestling, but anyone I mentioned it to laughed and told me I must have hallucinated it.

Luckily the Internet came along and I was able to prove it really did exist.

Terrible movie though. Enjoy! I love that podcast too.

Zoolander - 9.5/10

Lost count of how many times I've watched this. For a few years it was my go-to hangover movie if I needed to lay on the couch and feel like trash. But it's been long enough since my last watch that a lot of the jokes felt fresh again.

I don't know if I can think of a funnier mainstream comedy since the year 2000. The only ones that come close are the first Hangover and Hot Fuzz, the latter of which isn't really a straight forward comedy.

"But why male models??"

I watched Safe with Jason Statham last night.

I decided to watch it because it got 6.5 on IMDB and I figured even it was just a regular Statham revenge movie, with that an IMDB score it would be entertaining at least....WRONG!

I give it 3 /10

Bad acting, huge plot holes, no continuity and disjointed. I recommend no one watch Safe.

The only saving grace is James Hong. I freaking love that guy.

I should definitely give this podcast a shot. Love Scheer and Mantzoukas in "The League".
