Rate The Last Movie You Saw - 2

In Fear 6/10

Another in a streak of mediocre horror. Simple premise, a few scares, well made for what I guess was a very low budget. That's about it. Maybe it was just reading the Texas Chainsaw article (great piece btw) but I'm frustrated that I can't remember the last time a horror movie totally blew me away. Leaving aside Cabin in the Woods (more of a metahorror comedy) the last I can remember was The Descent and that's coming up on ten years old.

I was going to start a thread called "why does horror suck?" in hopes of gathering some opinions on why horror is easily the worst genre of mainstream everything (not just movies), and maybe even gathering a few good suggestions. But the more I thought about it, the more I just think there isn't anything good to watch.

Have you seen Martyrs? It's been mentioned a few times around here. I finally watched it recently, and despite laughing a few times throughout, I found myself thinking about it for days after. It's not a great movie, but it's very unique. It's very more of a gore and violence movie than it is straight up conventional horror, and has some really tacky half baked philosophy going on... but it has to win points for effort.

I thought Martyrs was shit. For a ton of reasons. Mainly for their attempts at philosophical statements. I hate movies that are miserable for the sake of being miserable. I can enjoy horror on occasion, but this stuff, nah. I only watched this in the first place when someone suggested it was worth it.

i don't really wanna get into spoilers, but by the end of the movie my friend was so angry about it. she thought it was the stupidest sh*t ever, especially that weird 2001: space odyssey-y scene. lmao

but i dunno man. i have absolutely no problem at all with philosophical statements, even grand or obtuse ones. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. i mean, at least there's an EFFORT in there, as opposed to something like Saw--or something mindlessly violent like every action movie ever.

but Martyrs is SO visceral and extreme enough that even if its "philosophical statements" don't add up to much on the deliverer's end, as a viewer I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. not because I was puzzled by it, but because the experience of watching it itself was so discomforting. not sure if that makes any sense, but whatever

then again, I didn't have a lot going on that week, so maybe that's why I had it stuck in my head.

Am I weird for thinking it wasn't so? The first half of the movie was by the books slasher film affair and in the next half, I can really only think of one shot that stuck with me more than a few minutes after the movie. I think the most discomforting thing for me was watching the movie the entire time anticipating the disgust and never having that expectation met.

If you want to venture more into the sickness and weirdness, check out the even more flawed and extreme movie Inside as I have mentioned before.

Calling out Bookie, you, Monty, Kryten and everyone who commented on the House of the Devil, when are you watching it?

Think I'm gonna go on a spree of some classic horror that I haven't watched since my teenage years - Halloween, Alien, Texas Chainsaw etc.

i do this every year around this time. prepare for some disappointments though. most of it doesn't hold up.

texas chainsaw, however, i think totally does

can you specify exactly what was so extreme?

aside from the flaying, most of it was standard affair. They didn't even show the flaying, did they? Just the aftermath

i'm not sure its standard affair at all. i mean, maybe the first half. but in the second half of the movie, the narrative comes to a COMPLETE stand still, except for the last 5 minutes or so. its NOTHING but the display and tolerance of physical violence. is there even more than 2 or 3 lines of dialogue? it's just that dude going in there and beating her up and skinning her. for like 35 minutes! its utterly strange, IMO. i can't really think of many movies that just totally forego plot for something like that -- but i mean, yeah, the acts of violence themselves may not be anything unique, but i think the repetition and ultimate result more than make up for it. i certainly felt uneasy during it

Fair enough. I think it's a testament to the film that it can elicit such a strong response from viewers despite having much of the violence not be so explicit in its gore. I can think of films like Hostel and Hostel part 2 that are far more extreme in what is depicted yet it just does not have that lasting effect. I was reading the Martyrs wiki page and got a good laugh out of this bit. rofl

Laugier has confirmed in an interview that he is currently in the middle of negotiating the rights for Martyrs to be remade in America.[14] It will be directed by Daniel Stamm, director ofThe Last Exorcism, and written by Mark L. Smith, writer of Vacancy. The film comes from the producers of Twilight. The producer of the film has said he would like Twilight actress Kristen Stewart for the film,[15] though her presence in the film was later denied by Stamm.[16][17]

I find it far more palatable when a movie tries to say nothing, than when a movie is full of shit. Not necessarily when I degree with a movie, but when it rings so hollow, or it can't figure out what it wants to say.

I dunno. Some of them really don't. But the other 2 he mentioned, Halloween and Alien, hold up equally well. They're really good movies to watch, and elicit similar reactions today.

yeah, and I watch Hostel and stuff without blinking. Doesn't really bother me at all, but I turned away a few times in Martyrs

and I remember reading that too. lmao imagine that movie being introduced to the mainstream american audience. good grief

not a big sci fi fan at all, but Alien does hold up yah. I wasn't super into Halloween last year when I watched it, but I'm not sure if it's because it didn't hold up or if I'm just not into slasher type movies.

did you enjoy 2001: A space odyssey?

Have you seen either of the Funny Games movies, German or American? Both barely have any explicit violence on screen but I think that one scarred me for life.

It tried its hand in trying to be meta but the breaking of the 4th wall was just strange (or maybe I am not used to it), however the rewatch has held up well. I think it's a good movie to add to the Halloween marathon.

Going to watch it shortly, but will have to watch it without the wife. She cannot watch horror films anymore.

EDIT: Holy crap! If the movie is half as good as the opening music with the credits, this is going to be a blast!

never watched the American one because I can't stand looking at naomi watts. i find her so strangely attractive that its just distracting

You're making me want to watch it again. Just downloaded it. It's a total blast, especially with Jack o Lanterns around you.

Yeah, I've watched most of his movies myself and they are all pretty hard to shake off. And gee, I have never felt that way about someone before. How can a person be so attractive that their appearance is hard to stand?

You're not missing out on much though as it's almost a shot for shot remake, Michael Pitt was excellent in it.

i can't explain the Watts thing at all, and i'm not even exaggerating either. i find her utterly distracting. and it's weird, because she's a completely scrawny, flat chested blonde--the exact opposite of what i would describe as my ideal, and yet i find her more attractive than anyone else i've probably seen. i even like her stupid chipmunk teeth.
