The Infiltrator  5/10

Feel like I've seen this one 20 times before. Brian Cranston as a customs agent going undercover after Pablo Escobar. At least they focused more on the money laundering - banking aspect as opposed to War on Drugs stuff. But it was no Big Short, didn't do a great job of explaining the ins and outs, just a bunch of confusing scenes of him meeting with bankers in vague cities.

John Leguizamo was awesome. Stole every scene as the classic cop who lives so long undercover he becomes openly addicted to the life.

before the flood: 6/10

i always have a difficult time rating documentaries, but this one had a very distinct feeling of 'meh' throughout. not only does Leo come off as inarticulate, he often seems actually kind of stupid in some scenes. i'm glad he found something to be passionate about (i guess?) but he is no documentary host.

at times throughout i caught wondering to myself who the movie is for? people who are sorta in the dark about global warming? deniers? because even i, as just a casual reader of environmental/global warming news, felt like the information discussed here is neither new nor does it offer new ways to channel that information into action. it seemed like a new packaging of familiar ideas for people who aren't aware of them.

so for that i would highly recommend it for someone who is new to the global warming table. but for those of us who are already conscious of these things? i'm not exactly sure it's even worth the 90 minutes

It was for Leo. Leo did it for Leo.

Dirk Gently: Holistic Detective (6.5/10)

A bit of a zany show based on the book written by Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy). Filmed here in Vancouver.

jungle book (2016): 6/10

wasn't as bad as i was expecting, but certainly wasn't very good, either. i would say its best scenes are the best because they remind me of the original. and, on top of that, they are almost always done as a respite from the continuous chase sequences that serve no real purpose except to fill time and pad the story. so the "familiar" scenes were the most sentimental and enriching, and, as a result, they make the mediocrity around them seem more valuable because of the cheap nostalgic payoff we can all expect from time to time. does that make sense?

Leguizamo is such a fantastic character actor. He shows up in the 2nd season of Bloodline, and just chews up every scene he's in.

Watched The Revenant yesterday. Love the director, and the actors are all top-notch, so I knew it would be done well. But avoided it previously because I thought it would be a depressing movie full of nothing but pain and misery. It was better - and worse - than I imagined.

Some scenes were simply stunning. Overall though, did not enjoy it at all. Brief moments of peace and humanity only serve to set the viewer up for the next impending heartbreak...almost like clockwork. And the constant carnage was well past the point of believable.

Atlanta- Season 1: 8.75/10

I don't know how to describe this show. The acting is understated yet the situations they get themselves in are often so zany. The contrast between what they are dealing with and how the react works well. Donald Glover is definitely an interesting dude.

The season finale was great.

I loved how they brought you along with the jacket storyline. At first I had the impression that the whole episode was going to be a commentary on how things suck when you're hungover and looking for something you lost and trying to retrace steps. Then the dude gets shot and you find out that what was in the jacket was the important bit. Definitely didn't expect him to be renting a storage locker as an apartment

I have yet to watch the last episode, but the season has been great. Bang on about the acting being understated. I really want to go back and re-watch the season, but three memorable moments for me:

Spoiler

1. Black kid in the classroom dressing up in White Face.

2. Going to the gun range and putting up a "Dog Target". Every white person's reaction around was just horrified. Yet what they were targeting was far more sinister.

3. 35 year old black man transitioning into a 33 year old white man. All he did was put on a blond wig and dress a little preppy.

While I'm incredibly excited to see it, and the trailer looks fantastic, I really question as to why they chose to release it after it can be nominated for awards season. Likely won't mean anything, though.

This is a sequel I actually have high expectations for. Crazy how well the main cast has aged.

Surprised me actually. When I first heard they were making this I thought it would be like a lot of other reboot type things that I avoid completely for fear of ruining the original. I watched this earlier with low expectations but it looks great.

I don't know that they'd be gunning for awards with it anyways - or do you mean in the sense that it it's coming out in that new year wasteland dumping grounds for the big studios? If so, I think it's more likely that they're taking advantage of that and dropping a movie like this that'll get everyone in the 30-50 age group off their butts and down to the theatre out of nostalgia alone.

Have to admit I'm pretty worried about all the visual recreations of the original in that trailer (falling/sinking backwards, Renton smiling with hands on hood of car, etc). I hope to hell the full movie isn't packed with them, it would be such a shame. (there's also a split second there where they're back at the little wooden bridge on the moor and I'm just praying inside that he doesn't yell something awful like "It's shyte being Brexit!")

thank you! i love the original, but the trailer is literally just a re-creation with semi-updated versions of what we've already seen. i was really excited for this, and i'll gladly see it, but that trailer does nothing for me

Dr Strange-5/10

It was really pretty forgettable. The entire movie felt like the first act until suddenly the credits were playing. The visuals were pretty impressive, and I enjoyed watching it, but aside from that it was a very average movie going experience. It really felt like a watered down version of the first Iron Man.

I think that's just to maximize the nostalgia factor.

Did you read Porno, Irvine Welsh's sequel? Looks like it's loosely based on that (Begbie getting out of jail, Sick Boy owning a pub, The Gang Makes A Porno) and that definitely wasn't a retread.

Yup, phenomenal combination of drama and comedy. I can see this being great for many seasons.

Spoiler

Yeah that finale was sad and unexpected but at the same time it feels like it was leading up to that all along. Definitely a strong conclusion to season 1.

That bit before where Darius said he ate the two blunts had me laughing so hard. My god that character is hilarious.

IT - 6.5/10

As @GLASSJAW said, the acting is horrendous. However, that's part of the charm, at least to me. Some truly great scenes, like Pennywise coming out of the grave and the shower floor. Also the sink with the blood coming up was pretty sweet.

But that ending

The Shallows - 7/10

I really enjoyed it. Blake Lively was surprisingly not terrible, either.

Now, there were some truly head scratching questions. Like, would a shark terrorize this one girl for a day and a half? Or, with a dead whale to chomp on near by, why would a shark have any interest in her?

But it IS a shark movie, so I let all those logic questions slide. It was fun.

Denial  6.5/10

Legal drama about a holocaust denial case in England in the late 90s. Very dry & technical. Interesting for the historical aspects, forensic proof of Auschwitz, and legal tactics differing between UK/US. But bland. Oh so bland.

The Witch  9/10

Took 5 months for my nerves to settle, time to re-examine this. Held up, and was even better now that I was looking to appreciate the set design, lighting etc.
