Sicario - 7/10

Finally got around watching this after watching the beginning two other times.

It was good. Definitely fits into a film that I would have been raving about in my early 20s because "That's what you do". But at this point, I'm starting to age and movies about a judge, weasels, a rabbit, a talking baby, and a fat detective who misses his brother is all I need to get through the day.

After watching Sicario and recently Arrival, I think D.V has a knack for sound design in his films.  Sicario was absolutely punishing and dread feeling.  I gave it an 8/10 just because I love crime dramas, and decent ones are always few and far between.

Arrival: 8/10 - nice 180 from Sicario.  I usually get bored of these introsective sort of sci-fi's but I dug it the whole way through.  I am 100% confident D.V can pull the new Bladerunner off.

I never watched Paul Blart but I know my kids liked it. So I think I understand.

As for Sandler I only ever liked The Wedding Singer. And that was mainly because of the jokes around music and pop culture of the 80s.

I enjoyed Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore when I was younger, and even some SNL prior to that, but the humour does not hold up. And with all of the crap he's done since The Wedding Singer, I just can't stand him anymore.

I think Scream Queens Season 2 is some of the worst Television that I've actively ever taken the time to watch. Easily the worst since I made the mistake of giving the Walking Dead a chance.

I know most here would wonder why I or anyone would expect anything that's not bad/not stupid from this show, but I really liked Season 1. It wasn't smart, but it was so outrageous as a parody. It kind of blurred whether it was just spoofing 80's slashers, and fictional interpretations of college society, or whether it was saying something more real. I don't want to give it to much credit or anything, because almost all of what it existed to do, and what it accomplished in doing, was tickling the more juvenile aspects of my sense of humour. But it worked, as its completely non politically correct humour was hilarious.

The wheels fell off in the last episode of that season though, and rather than re-attach them for this year, they've rebuilt the whole thing into some directionless, humourless, mess of a thing. It says nothing, and does nothing. They're in a teaching hospital, but they don't use any of their setting for humour, and most of their attempts at anything in that field are self-referential non-jokes. They throw so many inconsequential and literally one note characters at the screen for minutes at a time because they're literally being portrayed as "cannon fodder" within the show. It's like, just because you outright say they are, it doesn't make it okay to do so with them. And a lot of the existing characters have been tossed into differing power dynamics, so that rather than play off what they're supposed to, they just grate on your nerves. It's not like they use those different power roles to grow those characters, because they all somehow regress.

It's not a show that necessitates a deep analysis, but I'm just trying to put together in words why the show suck as badly as it does right now. As it really does.

Watched inception a while ago and WOW now it's one of my favourite movies. I put off watching it because i tried when i was 13 or 14 and got very confused. Makes sense now that i actually pay attention. 10/10 for me. If anyone has any lucid dreaming tips let me know :)

Also watched interstellar, but didn't like it as much. It was a little boring for me, though it got me very interested in astronomy and trying to learn about the 4th, 5th etc dimension. Unfortunately i just ended up very confused. Anyway 7.5/10

Don't Think Twice - 4/10

I was expecting a movie about an improv comedy troupe to be, well, funny, but it was mostly sentimental sweet group dynamic stuff. Still good for the inside view on a little subculture, otherwise completely forgettable.

The Monster

Really generic horror, did not finish.

Ouija - Origin of Evil  5.5/10

I guess this is the prequel to some other horror movie I never saw, and is apparently terrible, but this was alright. Not really all that scary, but fun in the retro style of The Conjuring and House of the Devil.

What I enjoyed about Don't Think Twice was how genuine it felt. And according to those in the comedy industry, this is incredibly accurate to how things are. Coming to terms that only one of you will be something of worth in the industry, while those in your group (who may or may not be as talented as writers than the one that got famous) move on to the next chapter in their life. A chapter that they never prepared for (see: literally every pro athlete). That's what I liked about it.

As for Ouija, never saw it. But you mentioned House of the Devil, which is fantastic.

In A Valley Of Violence - 7/10

Ti West (House of the Devil, The Innkeepers) writes and directs his first non-horror film. Western film starring Ethan Hawks, Taissa Farmiga, Karen Gillam, and John Travolta.

While Ti West hasn't done a whole lot, I really enjoy his writing and directing style. This was no different. Love me my Westerns. It's nothing groundbreaking, as there is only so much you can do with a Western (meaning: no new stories).

Lots of fun and LOVE the very last scene/line before closing to credits.

Hell or High Water: 9/10

Would be one of my favourites for the year. Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine were great. Chris Pine has kind of surprised me; a thought he was just a supherhero movie guy.

I thought the soundtrack to the film was perfect.

Just watched that and I'd probably give it a strong 8. Great acting from the leads and everything else was really well done.

And yeah Nick Cave did an awesome job with the score. I was excited when I saw his name in the opening credits.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - 8.5/10

My wife and I enjoyed the Harry Potter films and books, but when in with lowered expectations; mainly because we didn't know much about it or follow any of it since we're in or mid 30s now.

But have to say, we both enjoyed this more than any of the Harry Potter films.
