aGENT
Inherent Vice - 8/10 Interesting movie. Reminds me of the old 'squeeze sand too tightly and it will slip through your fingers' analogy. This isn't a movie or plot to be figured out. As soon as you try to start putting the pieces together or solve the mystery, the film's illusion will slip right through your fingers. This film is best enjoyed as though you're simply along for the ride. Enjoy the scenery, the characters, the acting, the situations, the atmosphere, and the dialogue. Don't overthink it and I think you'll have a good time, though it certainly won't be for everyone. Great casting and acting. I'd like to watch it again, as it took me a while to figure that ^^^ out. aGENT
The Beatles: 8 Days a Week - 7/10 Tough one to review. It's fun to watch the iconic musicians become iconic musicians and have a hoot doing it. The footage/audio has been remastered wonderfully and looks and sounds great. How do you rate that 'poorly'? Conversely, we've seen pretty much all of this already and in far more detail, in the wonderful Anthologies. It also has a very Howard-esque glossy-sheen to it that makes it easy to watch but not necessarily more interesting. So I enjoyed it but also found it redundant and a bit too 'lollipops and rainbows' in typical Howard fashion. Part of me want to rate it higher and part of me lower than
Down by the River
17 hours ago, g_bassi13 said: The Big Short - 9/10 I liked the stilted manner in which it was told, and how they approached it with different versions of a similar story about the same topic. I can always appreciate anything that finds the kind of surrealism it did in reality. Movies tend to fabricate a lot to make a point when telling their story, to account for dramatic realism and such, often to a fault. To find a movie that uses other cinematic tools to create tension and drama rather than shredding said reality and fabricating its own is what made the experience better. Be it from personal stories or actual plot events it's kept grounded. It was also probably the most elegant way I've been talked down to before, as well. Though it needed to, and did it the right way. Having the actual characters vomit exposition and explanations would have been painful, and the cameos/non-sequiturs did their job in a way that the movie didn't either get muddled, or move to fast. edit: non-sequitur is the wrong word, but I'm not sure what the right word is. It's some variation of a segue. Bingo. Unlike the condescending talking down to that Scorsese gave in Wolf of Wall Street.
Down by the River
Finding Vivian Maier: 8/10 Mysterious documentary about a photographer that shot tens of thousands of photos but never developed them during her life. Documentary shows her work and the people she cared for as a nanny. Interesting to think about the ethics of publishing someone's work after they are gone. aGENT
What Happened Miss Simone? 8.5/10 Far more intimate, interesting and grittier than the above Howard/Beatles movie but I suppose that's helped by both the subject and the footage being less well known and some of it certainly far less happy of a tale. Very empathetic look at a sad, beautiful, immensely talented and as they frequently are, tortured, artist. Good watch.
Down by the River
Philomena: 8.75/10 Good story + great acting. Steve Coogan is great at telling you how he feels about something without saying a word. Some of the story relied a little bit too much on coincidence. D-Money
Eddie The Eagle - 6/10 About as clichéd as any sports film has a right to be. However, the story is a good one, and many scenes were genuinely funny - especially in the first half. Good family movie.

Most are absolutely terrible. Forget what I gave it, but a 6 seems about right. Looks like I gave it a 7.

The Bookie
Train To Busan was fun but I didn't see anything exceptional or unique about it. Mostly just made me want to watch Snowpiercer for the 5th or 6th time. I'd give it a 6/10. 9 hours ago, Hugor Hill said: Just know that it isn't scary. Ghostsof1915
Holiday Movies: Die Hard: ***** That is just for Rickman's performance alone. On Her Majesty's Secret Service: ***** Merry Christmas 007! Yes it has Lazenby, but I love the movie. Diana Rigg plays a great if not one of the best Bond girls. The ending! Scrooge/A Christmas Carol: Off the charts. A perfect Christmas movie. Christmas Eve tradition for me. Dated effects, but still a perfect movie. Alistair Sim is so good. The Lion in Winter: ***** A little something for everyone, intrigue everywhere. How O'Toole didn't get an Oscar seems so damn wrong.
