Rate The Last Movie You Saw - 2

Finally was able to do a binge watch. Two 6 hour flights will help with that:

Rogue One: 7/10....minus 1 for the stupid necklace cliche....plus 2 for all of Vader's scenes.

- First Hour was crap. Was even getting pissed at one point for how stupid it was at first. After that, it was I thought it was fantastic. I thought the plot was ingenious because when I was younger and watching 4-6, I was always wondering how the Empire created the Death Star's weapon. Also thought the director did a good job in that I didn't feel like politics was being shoved into my face in this one like it was in TFA. They stayed away from generic cheesiness and weren't afraid to expose weaknesses in their main characters (***cough****Rey****cough***). Not going to lie, I got goosebumps when Grand Moff Tarkin made his first appearance. That CGI was incredible.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back: 5/10

Cruise - Decent. Smulders - Ok. Danika Yarosh - Uggggh. Terrible Child Actor. Almost killed the movie for me by herself. Movie could have been a lot better with decent casting

Eye in the Sky: 9/10

Stellar acting performances all around. Not only entertaining but informative and educational on the procedures and chain of command of the military. RIP Alan Rickman, one of the best - "Never Tell a Soldier He Doesn't Know the Cost of War"

War Dogs: 7/10

Not the biggest fan of Teller, but pair him with Fat Jonah Hill and the chemistry works like a charm. Interesting story plot and good character development throughout. Good, not great movie. Would watch again, but probably not near any all time lists for me. Now brb as I go purchase some night vision goggles to smoke bongs in.

The Revenant: 7/10

I can understand Leo winning the Oscar for this one. Him and Hardy nailed their roles to perfection. Overall though, I found the movie to be...good(?) I was expecting more I guess though. The ending was very flat and left me wanting more. Other than Leo and Hardy, I found the rest of the supporting cast to be average and uninteresting. Which is fine when these 2 are the main features, but when the scenes without them came up, that was time to go to the bathroom or grab a snack.

Easily the best film I watched of 2016... not sure if it came out in 2016, but it was terrific.

Came out at the TIFF in 2015, but release wasn't until 2016. I haven't finished my list for 2016, but I've got it in there for sure.

Still have to watch a number of other flicks, but Eye in the Sky makes my top 5. Easily.

Fences: 6/10

complex characters who are often portrayed very well and extremely convincingly (Davis has the Oscar in the bag), but the overwhelming BAD TASTE this all leaves in my mouth pretty much nullifies everything positive about this movie. I felt Washington was kind over-selling his character at times, but that could have just been because of how dialogue-heavy it all is. I thought most of the secondary performances were actually kind of weak - and the movie CERTAINLY does not translate well from the stage, in fact, it almost seems like its just a filmed version of the broadway play at times. That is not a good thing, IMO. "cinematic" it is not. and finally, the music sucked.

I agree on everything you say except for when it comes to the Revenant. I thought the movie was amazing. It's just a hard movie to watch. Guy suffering for 2+ hours. The performances and the Directing/Cinematography were sublime.

The Chaser - 5/10

After watching The Wailing I decided to pick up this writer / director's first movie. It has an interesting premise, but man I was disappointed.  Firstly, it suffers from low budget. Secondly I felt that the 2nd act was too long - the police procedurals were boring as F. But most importantly, I can't stand films that take advantage of dumb police work. You wanna grab these Seoul police officers and detectives and slap them for being incompetent in every scene. EVERY SCENE!

Love that show. Only gets better as it progresses. The new season must be coming soon.

One of the very few shows that's consistently great. No filler episodes, no forgettable seasons.

american honey: 9/10

one of the most disturbing movies i've seen in a very long time. a bit heavy handed with the symbolism at times, perhaps, but still i found it just... fascinating in a repulsive sort of way. it's depressing at times, and i felt my own condescension creep up at others. but its just so OF ITS TIME (now) that I think it will be, or could be, a fascinating document for a future decade or generation to look back at. kind of like an anti-80s movie.

all that said, this movie is definitely not for everyone. not sure many here would have the patience for it. maybe @The Bookie would "appreciate" it? anyway, it's 3 hours, has LOTS of music, has LOTS of sorta empty scenes, has a lot of nasty sexual stuff going on. it was excessive in virtually every way, and still i couldn't stop watching.

A24 with another fantastic production, IMO. the clear winners of 2016 as far as i'm concerned

Finally got around to watching Serpico, and I'm glad I did. The shots of old New York were engaging, the street life, the clothes, his crap apartment with what would probably now be a non existent or highly coveted garden patio. And talk about a character cut from a different cloth. What cop would be knowledgeable of the ballet and opera, and have a sheepdog and ferns in his garden? He sits at his outdoor table drinking coffee and eating pastries when the nurse across the yard catches his fancy. He was an outsider on the force well before he fell victim to his own morals. Bonus points for looking like Archer in Heart of Archness Pt. 1, but that's pretty much where the comparisons stop.

Funny how all those dirty cops must not have taken him as much of a threat since they never dealt with him. So much power what could 1 man do even with a few friends. After all, we investigate our own.

Hollywood certainly didn't wait to get his story out by the end of 1973, assuming they caught wind of it when the NYT released their article in 1970. People wonder how a movie will fare over time. Well I didn't watch it when it came out, and I went into it virtually ignorant of the entire plot, even of the fact that it was based on a true story, but after 4 decades I think it passes muster.

American Honey   7/10

Loved it as an ultra-current dreamy arthouse fauxdoc in Middle America

Hated ir due to the frequency of Shia showing up. It was like there was a mandate in the script that every twenty minutes he makes animal noises and dominates. Annoying.
